3 It takes place every year on the same day. This year it on a Saturday. Although it is not a big event or a national holiday, it's a great excuse to enjoy or learn about some of England's customs and traditions, and also to think about knights and castles and dragons! It's also a good time to think about one of England's most famous men, William Shakespeare, who was not only born on 23rd April 1564 but also died on 23rd April

4 St. George is the patron saint of England. His emblem, a red cross on a white background, is the flag of England, and part of the British flag. Like England, every country in the UK has its own patron saint who in times of great peril is called upon to help save the country from its enemies.

6 George was born in a country that is now called Turkey nearly two thousand years ago. It was then part of the Roman empire. His parents were Christians and his father was a soldier. When George was old enough he joined the Roman army.

7 The Roman emperor, Diocletian worshipped, the Roman Gods and in AD 302 he issued an order that every soldier must make an offering to the Roman Gods. Christian soldiers who refused to do so must be arrested. George insisted that he would remain Christian.

8 St George protested against the Romans' torture of Christians and died for his beliefs. George was ordered to kill Christians but he would not do it. He told the emperor that he was wrong to order him to and that he was a Christian too.

9 The Emperor ordered George to be killed. He died on 23 rd April in Lydda, Palestine. Many people heard how brave George was, they became Christians too. For hundreds of years people in different countries all over the world heard about George.

10 After he died, George was called Saint George, which is a name given to some Christians to show they are special. The popularity of St George in England comes from the time of the early Crusades when it is said they saw him in a vision and were victorious. They wore red crosses on their clothes and shields and called it the cross of Saint George. Over 700years ago The King of England, Edward III ordered that Saint George should be the special Saint for England.

11 Henry V made him even more popular. Shakespeare wrote this famous line in his play about Henry V. "Cry God for Harry, England and Saint George! April 23 is also Shakespeare Day.

12 Stories began to be told about Saint George. These stories were not true but some people believed them. Do you know what the stories were about? The stories told of something that George did.

13 One of the best-known stories about Saint George is his fight with a dragon. But it is highly unlikely that he ever fought a dragon, and even more unlikely that he ever actually visited England. Despite this, St. George is known throughout the world as the dragon-slaying patron saint of England. St George is often depicted as a knight carrying a shield with a red cross (or a banner with a red cross), generally sitting upon a horse and always killing a dragon.

14 Artists painted pictures to tell the story of how George killed a dragon. The most famous picture of George and the dragon was painted by an Italian artist called Uccello. You can see it in the National Gallery in London. Uccello s painting shows the whole story of Saint George and the dragon but you have to look carefully to work it out.

15 How does England celebrate St George's Day? By tradition, 23 April is the day for a red rose in the button hole, the national flower. However, unlike other countries, England does not celebrate it like Americans celebrate 4 July with fireworks. For most people in England St George s Day is just another ordinary working day.

16 One city in England that does celebrate St. George s Day is Manchester.

17 Al-Khader is a Palestinian town in the Bethlehem Governorate in the southcentral West Bank. It is located 5 kilometers west of Bethlehem. The area around al-khader is marked by vineyards, and olive and fig trees. This is a Muslim village. Saint George s Day is a big festival in the village.
