In this edition of the HES Press we will be hearing from Mrs. Coggin about the exciting Hermitage Elementary School Blue Ribbon Award, we ll be telling you how Valentine s began, we will have games to play, and much more. Darien: How do you win the Blue Ribbon Award? Mrs. Coggin: The state nominates 10 schools in Virginia every year. They look at your test scores, your SOL scores, then they use test scores to decide who those 10 schools are going to be. Once they pick you, you have to fill out an application, then that is sent to the Department of Education in Washington D.C. Darien: Is this the first time the school has won the Blue Ribbon Award? Mrs. Coggin: No, we won the first time in Darien: Are you proud to be the principal of a school that won the award? Mrs. Coggin: Sure! It s a very, very big honor to have the award. To be the principal of Hermitage is very special. Darien: Is there a plaque for it? Mrs. Coggin: We were given a plaque and a flag when we were in Washington. Darien: Where will you hang the plague? Mrs. Coggin: Right now it is on display in the front office. At the end of the school year we will hang it next to the plaque the we won in Darien: Is there any extra information you would like to share? Mrs. Coggin: We are the only school in Virginia Beach to win the award. The school was recognized in a ceremony in Washington D.C. in November. We received special recognition from the school board. WOW! We are so proud of our school! Go Hermitage!

On February 5th, 2015, the 50th anniversary of Hermitage Elementary School will be celebrated. The original Hermitage Elementary opened its doors on November At that time, about 970 students attended this school. Then, in the summer of 2003, most of the original Hermitage was destroyed because the building had become old and run down. In April 2004, after spring break, students moved into the new Hermitage. The new school was the first elementary school in Virginia to be LEED certified. All LEED buildings meet strict environmental standards, like using recycled building materials and adding energy efficient lighting. The newly opened school also had a dedication Ceremony on November 15, That Hermitage is the same Hermitage we go to school in now! Happy 50th anniversary to our very own Hermitage Elementary School! We saw many familiar book characters like: Willie Wonka Tinker Bell Sofia Junie B. Jones Sleeping Beauty Snow White The Kid in the Red Jacket Luna Lovegood And many characters from the Dork Diaries! Mrs. Kubat got into the character of Farmer Brown from Click, Clack, Moo! What a fun way to celebrate Reading Month!! S U P E R B O W L X L I X S U N D A Y, F E B. 0 1, By: Dylan C. For those who do not know what the Super Bowl is, it is the biggest football game of the season. The two teams not defeated during the playoffs go on to the championship of the season. They are Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots. So, watch on February 1st and may the best team win!!

Here is what he had to say! Alyssa: What made you come to Hermitage? Mr. Watrous: My mom. Alyssa: What s your favorite part of your job? Mr. Watrous: The kids and the military atmosphere. Alyssa: Why do you like the military atmosphere? Mr. Watrous:I have a great respect for the military and I like to read books about the military. Alyssa: What s your favorite grade to teach? Mr. Watrous: I like them all, but I d have to say 4th and 5th. Alyssa: What s your favorite fruit? Mr. Watrous: Strawberries, oranges, and melon, but apples are really good, too! Alyssa: What s your favorite football team? Mr. Watrous: Green Bay Packers Alyssa: What s your favorite color? Mr. Watrous: Green! A N O T E F R O M M R S. C H E C C H I O A B O U T J U M P R O P E F O R H E A R T Jump Rope For Heart and Hoops For Heart are educational fund development programs that are co-sponsored by AAHPERD and the American Heart Association. These programs promote physical education and provide children with knowledge of heart disease and stroke while raising funds for cardiovascular disease research, stroke research, and health education. It s a great annual event to increase awareness about heart health and raise money for the American Heart Association for continued research and education. Mrs. Checchio Physical Education

Well, if people saw him, they d be scared. I mean he wears a diaper and he shoots heart arrows. It s like he s in the Hunger Games or something where you wear undies as protection. Anyway, he finally saw someone. He went up to the man and asked, May I Ahh!, said the man, and he ran off just like that! Now, Cupid is crying in a junkyard of tissues. By: Samadhi W. Hey guys, guess what? Valentine s Day is coming up! Don t you guys love Valentine s Day? Well, have you ever thought of how Valentine s Day even started? Well, that s why I m here. Each year, on February 14th, many people give others cards, candy, gifts, and even flowers. However, Valentine s Day is actually named for a Christian martyr and dates back to the 5th century, but has origins in the Roman holiday, Lupercalia. Yep, that s the truth about Valentine s Day.
