She has a fondness for the landscape, more specifically, the Midwest landscape. The large open spaces of the prairies and the expansive sky beckon her. While she lives on the outskirts of the city, the elevated view from her studio is one of beauty, lush farmland and the Missouri riverbank. Julie draws inspiration from travels and exploring the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve. While looking at her paintings, it is evident that Julie is passionate about her work. Her pieces reflect the beauty of nature, serene and calming. Julie s personal style leans towards the abstract or impressionistic. Painted in pastels, each piece is layered over a black or brown hand prepared paper. Her unorthodox technique is achieved by using the broken pieces of pastel, as opposed to drawing with the sticks, to create a painterly effect. She begins with dark, abstract undertones. Definition and color are heightened with each layer, until she reaches the point where the work is still fresh and not overdone. Color and line are important elements in each painting. The artist is a firm believer in the power of color. It has the ability to provoke emotion and a deep sense of place. Soft blue skies, blue as the ocean, and crisp, emerald green grasses, fill the picture plane. The viewer can get swept away by her upward strokes of the sky, you can almost feel the gentle breeze. Her aim is to romanticize the landscape and give honor to the place she calls home.
