Alexander had a lot of confidence: he was sure of himself and of his ability to handle the wild horse. Conquer. Conquer a land or a country: to control the land or the country by force. Alexander conquered Persia: he fought with his army and took control of Persia by force. Custom. A country¹s custom: a way of behaving that is usual or accepted in a certain place or by a certain group of people. Alexander adopted some Persian customs: he started wearing a robe and a tiara like Persian kings, and asking people to bow in front of him like Persians do. Defeat. To defeat someone: to win, to beat someone. Alexander defeated the army of King Porus with its 200 elephants. Fairness. Treat people with fairness: treat people in a just way, without favoring one person or one group over another. Alexander the Great tried to treat the Persians with fairness, like he would treat his own Greek countrymen. Fool. To act like a fool: to act silly, to act without good judgment. King Philip thought that Alexander would make a fool out of himself by trying to ride a wild horse. Gallop. To gallop on a horse¹s back: to ride a horse moving rapidly. Alexander was able to gallop on the wild horse. Hero. To be a hero: to show special courage that other people admire. Alexander was a hero, he was not afraid to fight much bigger and more powerful opponents. Ill. Ill: very sick. Alexander became ill before he died. Justice. Treat people with justice: treat people with fairness, in a way that is right and just. Alexander the Great treated his Greek and Persian soldiers with justice.

Alexander noticed that the mark on the horse¹s forehead looked like an ox head. Pride. To be full of pride : to feel good and confident about what one has done or can do. Alexander is full of pride because he knows that he can do heroic things (he can act as a hero). King Philip was proud of Alexander because he tamed the horse (he made the wild horse obey him). Respect. To respect someone: to be polite and considerate with that person. Alexander respected the people who were different from him and from his Greek countrymen. Seek. Seek to do something: try to do something. Alexander was seeking to conquer India. Shadow. Shadow: a dark image created when someone or something blocks the light or the sunlight. The area that does not receive the light creates that image. Alexander realized that the horse was afraid of its own shadow. Splendor. Splendor: describes something that is grand, magnificent, very beautiful, splendid. Babylon was a city full of splendor. Stallion. Stallion: an adult male horse. The horse that Alexander tamed was a black stallion. Terrace. Terrace: a flat, raised area. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon had many terraces. Wise. Wise: someone having a good understanding of what is right, good or true, someone having wisdom. Alexander became wise when he grew up, he had the ability to make the right decisions. Worthy. Worthy: having value or importance. King Philip wanted Alexander to have a kingdom worthy of himself, a kingdom that is as important
