1 Effective January 2015 Program Casino Dealer Training CASINO DEALER TRAINING NEW IN JANUARY 2015! The casino and gaming industry in Maryland and the Greater Baltimore Area is growing and includes a variety of occupations including a need for well-trained dealers for a variety of table games. Career opportunities also exist in nearby regions and other states. Dealers often run a number of different table games which include poker, craps, roulette, blackjack and some of the specialty, or carnival, games! Dealers work in casinos that are usually open 7 days per week and 24 hours per day. Customer traffic and demand, and therefore dealer shift scheduling, generally peaks from late afternoon through midnight. Thus, dealers may work on a shift schedule. Dealers spend a considerable amount of time on their feet and must be able to maintain high energy and concentration levels. Casinos employ both full-time and part-time dealers; full-time positions usually include benefits. Basic wages are supplemented by tips, or toke. An average hourly tote is frequently between $22 and $25 per hour for the majority of the games and can run even higher at certain times and casino locations. In addition to completing the quality training that CCBC s program provides and demonstrating the table game skills required, casino employers look to hire dealers with excellent people and service skills, outgoing personalities and effective, professional communication skills. 4 Frequently Asked Questions What number do I contact to obtain more course information? What number do I contact to find out course dates and prices? or go to the college website at: What number do I contact register for a dealer training course or courses? When will I be able to register for a course or courses? We expect to be able to accept and process registrations after November 15, Will I be required to pay for my course or courses at time of registration? Yes. You will be required to pay in full for any/all courses in which you register. What issues may affect my employability after completing a course? Casino employers will require a background check and a drug screen prior to making a final employment offer. What physical elements are involved in the training and in the position as a career choice? A considerable amount of the training time requires students to be on their feet. This replicates the ultimate work environment. Once employed, dealers almost exclusively work on their feet for fairly long stretches of time. What table games should I take to improve my job search potential after completing training? You must take the Introduction to Casino Games and then either A. Blackjack and Carnival Games, or B. Poker. After completing Blackjack and Carnival Games you should register for a second core table game such as Craps, Roulette, Baccarrat, Pai Gow Tiles or Pai Gow Poker. Most employers require applicants to be trained in either two core games (i.e. Blackjack/Carnival Games and perhaps Roulette) or in Poker. Dealers with only Poker training are only eligible to work in the Poker room in most casinos. Does Maryland require dealers to be licensed? Yes How do I obtain my Maryland Dealer License? Typically a casino will make a conditional dealer hire that is dependent on the person being granted a dealer license from the state. The application for a license is made on behalf of the individual by the casino. Is a Maryland Dealer License transportable to other states? No, once you are hired in another state you will need to obtain a dealer license from that states licensing agency. How many instructional (clock) hours are in each course? Intro to Casino Games-20 Hrs* Blackjack-80 Hrs** Carnival Games-20 Hrs ** Poker-80 Hrs Craps Procedures-80 Hrs*** Craps Dealer-80 Hrs*** Roulette-80 Hrs Baccarat-80 Hrs Pai Gow Poker-80 Hrs Pai Gow Tiles-80 Hrs *Prerequisite to take Blackjack and Poker **Must complete both Blackjack and Carnival Games to earn Certificate ***Must complete both Craps Procedures and Craps Dealer courses to earn Certificate. Where are classroom sessions held? CCBC Owings Mills Center, Grand Central Avenue, Owings Mills, MD What type of training format is used? The vast majority of the training is hands-on instruction and supplemented by lecture and discussion. Introduction to Casino Games is primarily lecture/discussion. Dealer training occurs in our lab at the CCBC Owings Mills Center. What type of equipment is used in training? All supplies and training equipment is casino grade to simulate the cards, chips, rakes, etc. that dealers use in casinos. The lab includes 3 Blackjack tables, 1 Craps table, 1 Roulette table, and 1 Poker table. Interchangeable table tops are used to convert Blackjack and Poker tables when instruction covers Carnival Games, Pai Gow Tiles or Poker, and Baccarat.
