2 The Graduate School at Bradley University specializes in professional programs for emerging leaders, and its strength lies in the close collaboration of students with faculty and professional partners. Offering nearly 40 certificate, master s and doctoral programs in fields as diverse as business, engineering and the sciences to art, education and nursing, The Graduate School provides the best in hands-on learning through small class sizes, professional experiences and a graduate student-tofaculty ratio of 4:1. The Department of Leadership in Education, Nonprofits and Counseling prepares you to be a leader in your field by engaging you in experiential learning that is reflective of contemporary work environments and based on thoughtful research. Additional specialized learning and educational opportunities are supported through carefully supervised practicums and internships with local schools as well as counseling and human service organizations. To help manage the cost of a Bradley degree, The Graduate School generously supports multiple assistantships and scholarships each year. Most graduate assistants receive a minimum of a 50 percent tuition waiver and a stipend while gaining additional valuable experience learning from faculty in instructional activities, clinical settings, research and creative production. Recipients of the University s graduate scholarships may benefit from up to a 50 percent tuition reduction. Beyond assistance from Bradley, support also is provided by state and federal funding agencies as well as private businesses with a local, national and international presence. 3 Department Alumni Speak Out I was able to continue working full-time while taking advantage of Bradley s evening and online classes. Every course included a project that involved reaching into the community, which helped us learn more about the agencies in the local area, network with other professionals and apply what we were learning to real situations. 4 COUNSELING When pursuing a master s in Counseling, you have the choice of two specialty areas Clinical Mental Health Counseling and Professional School Counseling. Both tracks are focused on the fundamental belief that counselors work to promote the growth and development of people. They also provide cognitive and experiential learning opportunities designed to enhance your skills while practicums and internships enable you to establish a specialization consistent with your plans for future employment. LEADERSHIP IN EDUCATIONAL ADMINISTRATION Updated and approved by the Illinois State Board of Education in May 2013, the Leadership in Educational Administration program has evolved with the ever-changing school environment. With a focus on practical issues school leaders face, the coursework emphasizes the necessity of making connections for effective administration. An expanded internship provides additional opportunities for considering issues from a variety of perspectives and for applying theory to real-life situations. This program will help you develop into a leader who empowers others based on your own clearly defined values, preparing you to serve in all levels of educational administration from preschool to high school: Assistant Principal Principal Dean During your 36 semester hours of coursework, you will gain practical administrative skills, a clear understanding of the connections between knowledge of schools and society, and a strong sense of the democratic values of equity and justice. You also will learn to: Understand important legal issues in education Analyze the impact of social issues on schools Assess programs and provide leadership for instructional programs Administer special education programs NONPROFIT LEADERSHIP The Nonprofit Leadership program focuses on developing effective, ethical and visionary leaders with informed decision-making skills. Emphasizing leadership rather than management, the program places particular importance on building your leadership tool kit. A culminating field experience with a practicing administrator mentor provides the opportunity to work collaboratively on a major project and other administrative tasks.

5 With a projected job growth of 29 percent for clinical mental health counselors and 12 percent for professional school counselors, 1 this program will prepare you to work with a wide range of public and private organizations: Elementary, middle and high schools Colleges and universities Health and residential care facilities Job training and career development centers State and local governments Social service agencies Correctional institutions Community improvement and social change organizations Drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs Through your 60 semester hours of coursework (61 for non-teachers), you will learn to: Effectively work with other professionals Act as a consultant Apply skills and theories related to counseling needs Effectively communicate feelings and factual information Evaluate human subjects Exhibit a high degree of sensitivity and acceptance of other s behavior Conceptualize, diagnose and treat emotional and behavioral concerns Apply ethical and moral practices of counselors following the ACA Ethical Guidelines In your final semester, you will become eligible to take the National Counselor Examination (NCE), which is required for certification as a National Certified Counselor (NCC) and licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Illinois. Create school improvement initiatives based on data Develop budgets and financial plans Write grant proposals Build consensus among diverse constituent groups During your concluding internship, you will complete activities related to each of the six Educational Leadership Constituent Council (ELCC) standards and fulfill additional requirements demonstrating leadership skills as prescribed by the Illinois State Board of Education. If you already have a master s degree in education or an educationrelated field and want to qualify for licensure as an Illinois school administrator, the department offers a post-master s licensure sequence with the necessary coursework. As nonprofits accounted for 11.4 million jobs in percent of all private-sector employment 2 this area shows much potential for career growth in a variety of human service settings: Community and social service agencies Colleges and universities Health care facilities Faith-based and charitable organizations Your 36 hours of coursework will equip you with the fundamental practical skills necessary to lead today s nonprofits: strategic planning and evaluation, financial leadership, performance and accountability, supervision and development of personnel, fundraising and grant writing. You also will learn to: Analyze the impact of social issues on human service systems delivery Develop productive relationships with the community Assess programs and provide leadership for policy development Administer special programs Design programs aligned with state and federal guidelines Create organized improvement initiatives based on data Resolve conflicts and lead group processes Understand important legal issues in human service administration To demonstrate mastery of knowledge and skills, as well as competence in application, you also will create and present a comprehensive portfolio during your last semester.
