Job Shadow Process Job Shadow Checklist Job Shadow Registration Form (required 1 WEEK prior to job shadow day 100 POINTS) Making the Contact Guide Parent Permission Form (required 1 WEEK prior to job shadow day; take copy with you to job shadow 50 POINTS) Job Shadow Observation Worksheet (required 2 days after job shadow day 50 POINTS) Job Shadow Reflection Form (required 2 days after job shadow day 50 POINTS)) Thank You Letter (required 2 days after job shadow day; Digital Communications Teacher will mail it for you 50 POINTS) PLAN WISELY PLAN AHEAD! First Semester: Entire process completed by Friday, December 2, 2011 Second Semester: Entire process completed by Friday, April 13, 2012 This experience must be a job shadow of your senior portfolio career choice or a position that is along that career track. 2 The Job Shadow Process The process of completing a job shadowing experience requires work to be done before, during and after visiting the job site. Use the following plan as an overview of the job shadowing experience. BEFORE THE JOB SHADOWING VISIT: 1. Review the Checklist and start the Job Shadow Process. 2. Contact the job shadow host and arrange the date and time. Review the Making Contact Guide. 3. Fill out the Job Shadow Registration Form and have your Digital Communications teacher approve it. 4. Complete the Parent Permission Form and submit to the Attendance Office. Next, get a prearranged school business dismissal slip and have it signed by each of your teachers. 5. Confirm your job shadow appointment a few days in advance using the script in your packet; if you are visiting a family member s workplace, verbally remind him/her of your scheduled visit. 6. Review the rest of your packet to familiarize yourself with the information you will need from your host. DURING THE JOB SHADOWING VISIT: 1. Introduce yourself to your host, explaining the information you hope to gain from your job shadow experience. 2. Present a copy of your Parent Permission Form to your host for insurance information. 3. Observe and interview your host. 4. Watch your host and fill out the Observation Worksheet and place in your portfolio. 5. Thank your host when your day is over and place a copy in your portfolio. AFTER THE VISIT: 1. Fill out the Reflection Form in your packet and place in your folder. 2. Write and mail a Thank You Letter; use the guidelines provided in your packet. Place a copy in the basket for grade. 3. Confirm with your Digital Communications Teacher and check your PASS for the following: Checklist Registration Form Parent Permission Form Observation Worksheet Reflection Form Copy of Thank You Letter Page 2 of 9

4 Making the Contact Guide Before contacting the employer, make sure that you have the person s full name. In addition, make sure that you contact them at a convenient time. For example, do not call a restaurant during meal hours. 1. Introduce yourself, your school, and your purpose for calling. Hello, is (the manager) available please? Hi, my name is. I am a student at Elma High School and I am interested in job shadowing at your company. I would like to do a job shadow that would give me the opportunity to spend four to eight hours in your business setting. I would like to observe your workplace and interview a worker to learn more about this occupation. This will help me make informed decisions for my future as I plan to pursue this career path. Do you think you can help me? (yes) (no) If not, do you know of someone in your field that may be willing to assist me with this project? (**Remember they are doing you a favor; try your hardest to work with their schedule!) 2. Make sure that you have the following information before you hang up. 9 Thank You Letter Sample Thank you letters are an important professional courtesy. Telling people how much you appreciate their efforts makes them feel good about what they do. It also make a good impression on them. Complete a professional thank you letter to the person(s) who assisted you with your successful job shadow experience upon completion of the experience. You must have a complete mailing address for the company where you job shadowed. This should be done within one week of the shadow experience.
