First Grade Classroom Management Plan Rules, Consequences, and Procedures: Rules: 1. Treat members of the class and their property with respect. 2. Follow directions given by the teacher the first time given. 3. Raise your hand and wait to be called on. 4. Be prepared for class. 5. Stay seated unless you have permission to be out of your seat. 6. Let Ms. Moses teach. I chose these rules because they are stated in a positive manner and will be beneficial to the way my class is going to be set up. The rules are stated in a manner that makes my expectations clear. There are only five rules which make it easy for the students to remember and follow. The sixth rule came from Harry Wong s book and we liked it because it was to the point. The rules are important for the learning environment and are not unfair expectations or pointless, nit-picky items. The rules will be posted in the room and made visible to all students. This will be titled Classroom Rules and will also be signed by all students. We will review these the first two weeks of school and refer back to them if rules are broken. Consequences *At the first sign of a misbehavior, the child will be given a warning. If the child continues the behavior, a color will be changed and students will be required to complete a self-assessment sheet. Each student will have 3 cards/sticks/or a pocket chart with different colors. Green represents a great day. Yellow represents a warning and walk/reflection. Red represents letter to parents concerning inappropriate behavior and parents will be notified. First Offense: Verbal Warning Second Offense: Color Change/Self-Assessment sheet/parent Contact Third Offense: Color Change/Self-Assessment Sheet/ PBIS Team Member Conference/ Parent Contact Fourth Offense: Office Referral PBIS: Positive Behavior Intervention and Support *This is our new, school-wide behavior system. Students will be given a warning at the first sign of misbehavior. On the second sign of misbehavior, students are required to fill out a self-assessment form and parent contact is made. On the third sign of misbehavior,
students are required to fill out a self-assessment form and are sent to the appropriate PBIS Team Member for a conference and parent contact. On the fourth sign of misbehavior, students are required to fill out a self-assessment form, sent to the appropriate PBIS Team Member for a conference and referral to the office. A copy of each self-assessment for will be made and sent home with the child on the day of the misbehavior and it is to be signed and returned to the school the following day. ROAR: We have a school-wide behavior this year and expect each student to be Responsible, Obedient, Achieving, and Respectful! Nametags/Ids: Students will be required to wear ids again this year. These nametags are to remain at school, but should your child bring it home by accident, please make sure that he/she returns it the next day. Flashmasters/Nooks: Students will be able to check both out again this year. Please make sure that you have completed the permission slip and training. PROCEDURES: (All procedures will be practiced for the first two weeks of school and throughout the year as needed) o Morning- When students arrive; they will unpack their backpacks and put them in a cubby. They will take out homework for review and then put it in the designated area; the same will apply for important notes. Next, the students will be seated and complete their morning work. Morning work will be given daily as a review of previous content. If a student finishes the morning work quickly, he/she may read a book. o Homework- Students are responsible for completing homework and reading assignments every night. Please understand that it is not our intention to burden students with assignments, but homework is an opportunity to reinforce content learned that day in school. Missed homework assignments will be acknowledged in the agenda by a label that should be signed and returned. Every time an assignment is incomplete or missing, 5 points will be deducted from the 100. Montessori students will not receive grades. o 1 st Offense/night of missing assignments: Warning o 2 nd Offense/night of missing assignments: Note in the agenda o 3 rd Offense/night of missing assignments: Phone call to parent o 4 th Offense/night of missing assignments: Note in the agenda, phone call to parent, and student conference o with Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS) Team Member o 5 th Offense/night of missing assignments: Letter from administrator and note in agenda from teacher o 6 th Offense/night of missing assignments: Discipline referral to office and parent conference required
o Please speak to your child about the importance of completing homework. We want all students to be successful and prepared for learning! o Uniform Grading System o Beginning with the school year, all public schools in the State of South Carolina will use the same grading scale for students. A = B = C = D = F = 0-69 FSD1 Elementary School Report Card Grading o Grades 1 and 2 o Grade with an E (Excellent), S (Satisfactory), or N (Needs Improvement) using the following scale: E = S = N = 79 and below o Grades 1-6: E, S, and N will be used to grade Reading Renaissance, handwriting, art, music, physical education, and computer. o Conduct: Grades given for conduct will be recorded as S (Satisfactory) and U (Unsatisfactory) only. o AR or Reading Renaissance- Students are required to participate daily in Reading Renaissance. Students are given the opportunity to read for 20 minutes each day in class and are assigned reading homework each night for 20 minutes. Students should conference with you at home on their library books so that they may come to school ready to take an AR test. Students have a goal of 90% on AR to meet each nine weeks. Each time the students take a test, they receive points towards his/her goal. Our goal is to have students not only recalling the information from the book, but to be able to comprehend and apply what they have read. Incentives will be given to students who have reached or exceeded their 90% goal. o Restroom Use- There will be three class bathroom breaks. They will be 10 minutes. If it is an emergency and cannot wait, the teacher will allow the student to go. o Student Jobs- There will be a chart on the wall with jobs such as: line leader, light helper, paper assistant, door holder, and fire drill assistant etc. Each week the students will rotate and get a new job.
o Cafeteria - The students will be in alphabetical order when going through the cafeteria line, 1 s will be first and number 2 s will be second. When arriving to lunch the first ten minutes of lunch is silent lunch. The teacher will then signal with a green cup for the students to talk using 5 inch voices. If they do not, they will have silent lunch signaled by a red cup. After eating and dumping trays, they will line up by the back wall of the cafeteria. o Playground- Students will walk in a straight line when leaving the building. First the students will walk around the track 1 lap. Students will then be allowed to play on the playground equipment respecting each other. When it is time to go back in the building the teacher will give a hand signal. o Early Finishers- If students finish their work early, there will be specific instructions varying upon subject. Students may be allowed to work in small group centers if time allows. o To Get Teacher s Attention- We will raise our hands to get the teacher s attention. o Transitions- When shifting transitions from one lesson to another, the teacher will use several strategies such as counting, clapping, or music. Students will be given 1 minute to transition. o Group Work- Students will already be in a designated group because of tables or desks. The groups will be assigned to be sure the students work well together. The students may work at their desks or on the floor around the room. The groups should compromise and talk using inside voices. We will read many community building books in the beginning of the year to emphasize the word compromise. I will explain to students that inside voices are voices that are not more than 5 inches. I will show them a ruler so that they can understand how small their inside voice is in the classroom. o Lining Up- Students will line up next to the door in alphabetical order for specials. The person with the line leader responsibility will always come to the front of the line. The door holder will always line up second. o Packing Up/End of the Day Routine- At the end of the day, the students will get out their agendas and the teacher will record the student s color for the day. On Mondays students will receive homework sheet. The teacher will walk around to initial agendas. Students then pack up and car riders line up immediately so when the announcements go off. Students should perform these tasks quickly and quietly. After packing up, students will be allowed to participate in small group activities for reinforcement. o Dismissal- Once the announcements go off, the teacher will dismiss car riders immediately. The bus riders and after school will line up second and dismiss with the 2:10 bell. The walkers will line up last and I will walk them out at the 2:15 bell. o Safety- Safety rules will be reviewed at the beginning of the year to ensure the safety of all students. o Library Checkout Procedures General

Dear Parents/Guardians, August 19 th, 2013 Let me begin by telling you a little about myself. I graduated from Claflin University with a B.S. degree in Early Childhood Education in. I began teaching at Brockington Elementary School in Timmonsville, SC. I received my Master's degree in Education from Cambridge College. This is my twenty-ninth year of teaching and I have taught child development, kindergarten, first grade, and third grade. I am so excited about the upcoming school year and to be your child's first grade teacher. My name is Brenda Moses and I am from Timmonsville. I love to read, and solve word puzzles. I have two wonderful children and four adorable grandchildren, two of which are twin boys. I am thrilled to work with you to get the best education for your child and to help each student achieve success! There are a few things I need to help things run smoothly: Planners need to be initialed every night. This shows me that you know your child s behavior for that day and his/her homework. The behavior colors are as follows: Green-Great day, Yellow-Warning and walk at recess 10 minutes, Red-No recess, fill out a self-assessment sheet explaining their behavior for you to sign and return and parent contact. Students will have to flip color cards for behavior that is unacceptable and rules and responsibilities not followed. They can also earn cards back for good behavior. The school will be using the PBIS: Positive Behavior Intervention and Support system for behavior this year. Please see details in the Classroom Management Plan. Students should be doing homework every night and bringing it to school the next day. Staying organized with the correct folders and notebooks will help with this. Please read every night for 20 minutes and complete Reading Logs. If Reading Logs are not signed, I don t know that your child read. It also helps me keep track of the different books your child is interested in. Our Special Area classes are: Monday-Music, Tuesday- PE, Wednesday-Library, Thursday- Art, and Friday-Computer. These classes will be from 1:10-1:40. Remember to have your child wear or bring tennis shoes on the day of PE. Our lunch time is from 11:30-11:50. Recess will be from 11:55-12:15. Sincerely, Brenda Moses
