2 About: This high-speed USB 2.0 to SATA / IDE transfer adaptor kit, allows you to easily connect any SATA or IDE drive to your computer's USB port. 3 Prepare your hard drive For 3.5 /5.25 IDE Drives: Set your hard drive jumpers to MASTER or SINGLE DRIVE ONLY. Refer to your hard drive s documentation for information on jumper settings. For 2.5 IDE Drives: 2.5 IDE drives typically have a jumperless MASTER configuration. For SATA Drives: No jumpers necessary. Drivers No drivers are necessary when using Windows ME/XP/Vista/7. For Windows 98, please use the driver CD provided. 3

4 Installing the USB 2.0 to SATA/IDE Adaptor Kit For 2.5 IDE Hard Drives 1. Take the USB 2.0 to SATA/IDE Adaptor Cable, and connect the smaller 44- pin IDE connector to the hard drive. 2. The power adaptor and power cable are not needed as power will be supplied via the USB port. 3. Connect the USB end of the adaptor cable to an available USB port on your computer. 4. Your computer should automatically detect the drive. For 3.5 IDE Hard Drives 1. Make sure that you have prepared your hard drive using the instructions above. 2. Take the USB 2.0 to SATA/IDE Adaptor Cable, and connect the larger 40-pin IDE connector to the hard drive. 3. Connect the power cable to the power adaptor, and plug the power cable into a spare power socket. 4. Connect the power adaptor to the 4-pin power connector on your hard drive. 5. Connect the USB end of the adaptor cable to an available USB port on your computer. 6. Your computer should automatically detect the drive. For 2.5 / 3.5 SATA Hard Drives 1. Take the SATA data cable, connect one end to the SATA port of the adaptor cable, and the other end to the SATA port of your hard drive. 2. Connect the power cable to the power adaptor. Plug the power cable into a spare power socket. 3. Connect the power adaptor to the power connector on your hard drive. If your hard drive does not have a 4-pin power connector, use the SATA power supply cable provided. 4. Connect the USB end of the adaptor cable to an available USB port on your computer. 5. Your computer should automatically detect the drive. 4

5 Disconnecting the USB 2.0 to SATA/IDE Adaptor Kit Please note: Never remove the USB adaptor cable while the hard drive is in use. Doing so may cause damage or corruption to the hard drive. Windows 98/2000/XP/Vista/7 1. Ensure that no operations are running on the hard drive connected to the USB adaptor cable. 2. If there are any windows or programs related to the hard drive, please close them now. 3. In the system tray (bottom right) click the Safely Remove Hardware icon, and select the hard drive you wish to remove. A message should now pop up saying that it is Safe to Remove Hardware. If the message does not appear, wait for any programs that are still using the hard drive to finish and then try again. 4. Unplug the USB adaptor cable from your computer s USB port. 5

6 Troubleshooting Q. Can I connect more than one hard drive to the adaptor kit at the same time. A. No. The adaptor kit can only handle one hard drive at a time. Connecting multiple hard drives will likely cause data corruption. Q. My computer recognises the hard drive connected to the adaptor kit, but no drive letter is assigned. A. It is likely that you are using a brand new hard drive. If this isn t the case, it may that your computer cannot recognise the partition on the hard drive due to it being damaged or not in a valid format. You may need to create a new partition. Q. My computer occasionally gives me errors when using the adaptor kit. A. Please make sure that you connect the USB end of the adaptor cable to a rear port on your computer, directly off the motherboard of PCI card. Q. I can t copy files larger than 4GB onto the hard drive connected to the adaptor kit. A. It is likely that your hard drive has been partitioned in the FAT32 file system. The FAT32 file system limits file sizes to 4GB maximum. You can format your drive in the NTFS file system, which does not have this limitation. 6
