10 Herbert Ratenburg, WWI Citation for Award of the Distinguished Service Cross RATENBURG, HERBERT Citation: The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Herbert Ratenburg, Sergeant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Sanitary Detachment, 101st Machine-Gun Battalion (Attached), 26th Division, A.E.F., north of Chateau- Thierry, France, July 22, Although wounded in three places by machine-gun bullets, Sergeant Ratenburg followed the attack and continued his duty, thereby inspiring his comrades. General Orders No. 125, War Department, 1918 Born: at Manchester, Connecticut Home Town: Manchester, Connecticut Herbert s mother apparently died when he was young, as he is listed in the census with his grandparents, Sonnik and Andrea, in 1900 and His father Nicholas appears in the census in 1910 in Alaska as a gold miner, listed as a widower. By 1920 Nicholas is back in Manchester, Conn., (see previous page.) In 1920 Herbert is in Chicago, working as an insurance adjuster. In 1930 he is in San Antonio, Texas, with the same type of job. He died in Mississippi in 1970.

As a 2nd Lieutenant, he was an R.O.T.C. graduate of the University of Connecticut in He is listed on the WWII memorial page of the VFW Post 2046 of Manchester, Conn. <
