1 Ashford Park Primary School E-safety policy Teaching and learning E-Safety may be described as the school s ability: To protect and educate pupils and staff in their use of technology To have the appropriate mechanisms to intervene and support any incident where appropriate. The breadth of issues classified within e-safety is considerable, but can be categorised into three areas of risk: Content: being exposed to illegal, inappropriate or harmful materials ignoring age ratings in games (exposure to violence associated with often racist language), substance abuse; lifestyle websites (pro-anorexia/selfharm/suicide sites); hate sites Contact: being subjected to harmful online interaction with other users grooming, cyber-bullying, identity theft (including frape (hacking Facebook profiles) and sharing passwords Conduct: personal online behaviour that increases the likelihood of, or cause, harm disclosure of personal information; digital footprint and online reputation; the amount of time spent online (internet and gaming); sexting (sending and receiving personal images); copyright (intellectual property and ownership- such as music and film) Why Technology, Internet and digital communications are important Technology offers unimaginable opportunities, is constantly evolving and is an essential element in 21st century life for education, business and social interaction. The school provides Internet access as part of the learning experience. Technology raises educational standards and promotes pupil achievement

2 Technology supports the professional work of staff, enhances the school s management information and business administration systems. Internet access The school Internet access is provided by Surrey County through the RM EasyNet contract and includes filtering appropriate to the age of pupils. Pupils will be taught what Internet use is acceptable and what is not and given clear objectives for Internet use. Pupils will be educated in the effective use of the Internet in research, including the skills of knowledge location, retrieval and evaluation. Pupils will be shown how to publish and present information appropriately to a wider audience. Pupils will be taught how to evaluate Internet content The school will seek to ensure that the use of Internet derived materials by staff and by pupils complies with copyright law. Pupils will be taught to be critically aware of the materials they read and shown how to validate information before accepting its accuracy. Pupils will be taught how to report unpleasant Internet content e.g. using the CEOP Report Abuse icon or Hector Protector Have an increased understanding of the effects of bullying/cyber bullying and take responsibility for their own and others safety Have an increased ability to identify a range of effective strategies in dealing with bullying/cyber bullying. Pupils will be supported to protect themselves against cyber bullying, through school and Confederation training and Peer mentoring Have an increased knowledge of what relevant and appropriate services can offer to support young people affected by bullying/cyber bullying i.e Childline, NSPCC, Get Connected Parents and carers will be supported with their understanding of cyber bullying through confederation run workshops Ashford Park value parental/carer opinions when reviewing e-safety

3 Managing Internet Access Information system security School ICT systems security will be reviewed regularly. Virus protection will be updated regularly. Security strategies will be discussed with the Local Authority. Pupils and staff may only use approved accounts on the school system. Pupils must immediately tell a teacher if they receive offensive . Pupils must not reveal personal details of themselves or others in communication, or arrange to meet anyone without specific permission. Staff to pupil communication must only take place via a school address or from within the learning platform and will be monitored. Incoming should be treated as suspicious and attachments not opened unless the author is known. The school will consider how from pupils to external bodies is presented and controlled. The forwarding of chain letters is not permitted. Published content and the school web site The contact details on the Web site should be the school address, and telephone number. Staff or pupils personal information will not be published. The SBM will take overall editorial responsibility and ensure that content is accurate and appropriate. Publishing pupil s images and work Written permission from parents or carers will be obtained before photographs of pupils are published when a child commences at the school e.g. school website, newsletter, local press Pupils full names will be avoided on the Web site or learning platform, as appropriate, including in blogs, forums or wikis, particularly in association with photographs. Parents should be clearly informed of the school policy on image taking and publishing, both on school and independent electronic repositories

4 Social networking and personal publishing on the school learning platform The school will control access to social networking sites, and consider how to educate pupils in their safe use e.g. use of passwords. Newsgroups will be blocked unless a specific use is approved. Pupils will be advised never to give out personal details of any kind which may identify them or their location. Pupils must not place personal photos on any social network space provided in the school learning platform. Pupils and parents will be advised that the use of social network spaces outside school brings a range of dangers for primary aged pupils. Pupils will be advised to use nicknames and avatars when using social networking sites. Managing filtering The school will work in partnership with Surrey County Council to ensure systems to protect pupils are reviewed and improved. If staff or pupils come across unsuitable on-line materials, the site must be reported to the ICT technician The curricular leadership team will ensure that regular checks are made to ensure that the filtering methods selected are appropriate, effective and reasonable. Managing emerging technologies Emerging technologies will be examined for educational benefit and a risk assessment will be carried out before use in school is allowed. Mobile phones and associated cameras will not be used during lessons or formal school time except as part of an educational activity. The sending of abusive or inappropriate text messages is forbidden. Staff will use a school phone where contact with pupils is required. Staff will use the school mobile phone and technological equipment when accompanying pupils on educational visits away from the school setting. Protecting personal data Personal data will be recorded, processed, transferred and made available according to the Data Protection Act 1998.

5 Policy Decisions Authorising Internet access The school will maintain a current record of all staff and pupils who are granted access to school ICT systems. At Key Stage 1, access to the Internet will be by adult demonstration with directly supervised access to specific, approved on-line materials. Parents will be asked to sign and return a consent form. Assessing risks The school will take all reasonable precautions to prevent access to inappropriate material. However, due to the international scale and linked Internet content, it is not possible to guarantee that unsuitable material will never appear on a school computer. Neither the school nor SCC can accept liability for the material accessed, or any consequences of Internet access. The school will audit ICT use to establish if the e-safety policy is adequate and that the implementation of the e-safety policy is appropriate and effective. Handling e-safety complaints Complaints of Internet/technology misuse will be dealt with by a senior member of staff. Any complaint about staff misuse must be referred to the head teacher, who will, when necessary seek advice from the Area Schools Officer. Complaints of a child protection nature must be dealt with in accordance with school child protection/safeguarding procedures. Pupils and parents will be informed of the complaints procedure. Pupils and parents will be informed of consequences for pupils misusing the Internet. Community use of the Internet All use of the school Internet connection by community and other organisations shall be in accordance with the school e-safety policy. Communications Policy Introducing the e-safety policy to pupils Appropriate elements of the e-safety policy will be shared with pupils

6 E-safety rules will be posted in all networked rooms. Pupils will be informed that network and Internet use will be monitored. Curriculum opportunities to gain awareness of e-safety issues and how best to deal with them will be provided for pupils Staff and the e-safety policy Copies of the e-safety Policy are available on the Policies folder on the relevant drive. Staff will be provided with an encrypted memory stick which remains the professional property of the school. All passwords will be held in a secure location under the supervision of the SBM. Staff should be aware that Internet traffic can be monitored and traced to the individual user. Discretion and professional conduct is essential. Staff that manage filtering systems or monitor ICT use will be supervised by senior leadership and have clear procedures for reporting issues. Teaching staff and HLTAs are provided with a password protected laptop which remains the professional property of the school. These items must not be left locked in an unattended vehicle. Enlisting parents support The school will ask all new parents to sign the parent /pupil agreement when they register their child with the school. Parents and carers attention will be drawn to the School e-safety Policy in newsletters, virtual learning platform and on the school web site. Parents and carers will be provided with additional information on e- safety e.g. Cyber-bullying workshops run through the SST Confederation. The school will not be held responsible for pupil actions taken outside of school, concerning the use of technology e.g. Cyber Bullying. Parents/carers are responsible for keeping their child/ren safe outside of school when using technology.

7 Appendix 1 Mobile Device Guidance General use of mobile phones Mobile phones and personally-owned devices will not be used in any way during lessons or formal school time and should be stored in individual Lockers. Mobile phones and personally-owned mobile devices brought in to school are the responsibility of the device owner. The school accepts no responsibility for the loss, theft or damage of personally-owned mobile phones or mobile devices. Mobile phones and personal devices should only be used in the staff room, the school admin offices or the car park. Mobile phones will not be used during lessons or formal school time unless as part of an approved and directed curriculum-based activity with consent from a senior member of staff. The Bluetooth functionality of a mobile phone should be switched off at all times and not be used to send images or files to other mobile phones. No images or videos should be taken on mobile phones or personallyowned mobile devices without the prior consent of the person or people concerned. All children s mobile phones and personally-owned devices will be handed in at reception should they be brought into school. Pupils use of personal devices If a pupil breaches the school policy then the phone or device will be confiscated and will be held in a secure place in the school office. Mobile phones and devices will be released to parents or carers in accordance with the school policy. If a pupil needs to contact his or her parents or carers, they will be allowed to use a school phone. Parents are advised not to contact their child via their mobile phone during the school day, but to contact the school office. Pupils should protect their phone numbers by only giving them to trusted friends and family members. Pupils will be instructed in safe and appropriate use of mobile phones and personal devices and will be made aware of boundaries and consequences and encouraged to use PIN s and other security as necessary.

8 Staff use of personal devices Staff are not permitted to use their own mobile phones or devices for contacting children, young people or their families within or outside of the setting in a professional capacity. Staff will be issued with a school phone where contact with pupils, parents or carers is required for example a mobile on school trips or staff based landline in the school offices. Where staff members are required to use a mobile phone for school duties, for instance in case of emergency during off-site activities, or for contacting pupils or parents, then a school mobile phone will be provided and used. In an emergency where the staff member doesn t have access to a school owned device, they should use their own devices and hide (by inputting 141) their own mobile numbers for confidentiality purposes. Mobile Phones and personally-owned devices will be switched off or switched to silent mode, Bluetooth communication should be hidden or switched off and mobile phones or devices will not be used during teaching periods unless permission has been granted by a member of the senior leadership team in emergency circumstances. If members of staff have an educational reason to allow children to use mobile phones or a personal device as part of an educational activity then it will only take place when approved by the senior leadership team. Staff should not use personal devices such as mobile phones or cameras to take photos or videos of pupils and will only use work provided equipment for this purpose. Staff should ensure that their phones are protected with PIN codes in case of loss or theft. Staff should never store parents or pupil s telephone numbers on their mobile phone, as this allows the possibility of inappropriate contact. Staff should never send to, or accept from anyone, texts or images that could be viewed as inappropriate. If a member of staff breaches the school policy then disciplinary action will be taken as appropriate.
