1 SET PLAYS # 2 (ATTACKING FREE KICKS AND THROW-INS) Set Plays are sometimes referred to as Set Pieces or Starts and Restarts. Many Free Kicks and Throw-In are wasted due to lack of creativity by the free kick specialists and Thrower or by unimaginative coaches and players OR more often through lack of preparation, practice and attention to detail of these very important goal scoring opportunities. While there are many set pieces for free kicks and throw-is the ones contained in this article will assist coaches to create scoring opportunities from set plays. Eleven Rules of Successful Set Plays 1. Not all set plays result in scoring a goal but well executed set plays can create scoring opportunities either directly or indirectly from a well executed set play. 2. Discipline and Organization are paramount to successful Set Plays. 3. All team members must be fully aware of what is going to happen on every set play. 4. All players must buy into the Set Plays of their team. 5. Courage and good heading skills are essential. 6. Intelligence is a major factor in the execution of Set Plays. 7. Only players who are specialists or who have practiced stet plays are to take throw-ns and free kicks. 8. Throw to feet except when near the 18 yard box. 9. Timing of runs is critical. 10. Deception is crucial to success. 11. Practice, Practice, & more Practice is required to perfect Set Plays. FREE KICKS AROUND THE D Basic Formation For All Free kicks (Direct & Indirect) Starting position for all free kicks in this area. All Players face player A and all movements are fro player A s point of view. (7 Players) Player A, directly on the ball Player B, parallel & 1 yard from player A Player C, 3-5 yards behind ball Players D & E are about 1 yard away from opponents 1/1

4 Short & Long Free Kick Situations Short Kick (Quick Kick) In own half of field if there is no chance of putting the ball deep into the opponents end Nearest player to the ball immediately passes to the furthest open and unmarked teammate who will normally be able to advance the ball a considerable distance against teams that are not alert to the quick kick. Long Kick When you are capable of kicking the ball deep into an opponent s end (usually around the center circle for most teams) Overload the side opposite the side of the field that the kick will be taken from Only one player stays on the ball side of the field The ball should be placed in front of the overloaded side players Option: If the lone player on the ball side of the field is unmarked then the ball can be played quickly to this player who will look to go to goal or pass to the overloaded side behind defenders 4/4

5 THROW-INS 1. Throw-ins are the most common set play in soccer 2. Throw-is do not require a referee s whistle to start play 3. The off-side rule does not apply to throw-ins 4. Players should throw so that teammates can control the ball quickly. This is usually to feet Choosing the Right Target and Location of the Throw-in is Important: a. Near your own goal do not take chances. Throwing to a teammate who is running back to the ball protects the ball b. In the middle of the field or in the opponent s half players need to be mobile, creating space by interchanging positions and taking opponents away from the area where the ball will be thrown c. Level with the opponents penalty area a long throw into the penalty area similar to a corner kick or free kick. Basic Throw-In Situations Situation 1 Player A draws an opponent away from the wing and into the middle Player B moves into the space where the ball will be thrown Situation 2 Player A draws an opponent away from the spot where the throw is to go This allows player B to show for a short throw-in Player C moves into the space vacated by B and receives the throw while on the run 5/5

6 Situation 3 Player who can throw long throws to near post Player A flicks the ball to the far post area where Player B is running (timing is important) Situation 4 Players A & B get away from their opponent at the same time by coordinating their runs and showing for the ball Player A receives the ball on the run and B and C join in to create a group attacking situation Situation 5 Player A gets away from his/her marker with a body fake and receives the throw-in to feet On player A s first touch, player B separates from his/her marker and receives the pass from A Player C joins in the attack with player B 6/6

7 Situation 6 Player A comes to the throw to feet and makes a one touch pass to player B who runs into the space that player C has vacated taking an opponent with him/her Situation 7 Throw is to Player A s head and is headed back to the feet of the thrower who crosses a long ball into the penalty area for the group C players to attack After heading the ball back to the thrower, Player A runs towards his/her own goal to take opponents away Player B also draws an opponent away from the central area towards the sidelines 7/7
