Cardinal Athletics Philosophy The Concordia athletic program strives to offer our students the opportunity to develop their God given abilities in a Christ centered environment through practices and games. Coaches/Team Selection The following information is to help guide the students and parents of Concordia Lutheran School into a greater understanding of the school s athletic program. 1. CLS strives to provide parent volunteers as coaches in the K-6 Level. If you wish to volunteer to serve as a head or assistant coach, please indicate your desire in the appropriate section of the registration form. 2. CLS strives to provide faculty members as head coaches in the Middle School Level. When that is not possible, coaches are chosen who, in the view of school administration, are qualified and are willing and able to represent the athletic philosophy necessary to serve as head coach. Head coaches need to be at least 21 years old. 3. Team selection/placement for K-6 Level is determined by the athletic department. 4. When the number of participants warrant, team selection for Middle School Level teams may be determined through CLOSED (athletic dept. staff and coaches) tryouts conducted by the head coaches of the teams involved. Tryouts are not necessarily each year in every sport. The head coaches have the responsibility of advertising the tryouts and determining the final team members. 5. As numbers dictate in the Middle School Level, Concordia may seek to create an additional team that would provide a competitive opportunity for those not chosen on the Middle School Level A or B teams. 2
Expectations Player Conduct The way we act is a reflection of who we are and whose we are. We will glorify God with our athletic ability and witness His love with our actions. Competitiveness is a gift from Him. Self-control is also a gift. Respect your opponents, opposing coaches, and officials. Learn to handle adversity in a Godly manner. Practices and Games Joining a team is a commitment. Be on time to practices and games. If you have to miss a game or a practice, please inform your coach in advance. Failure to participate in Physical Education class due to illness or injury will prevent the student from participating in athletic practices or games that same day. PE/ATHLETIC DRESS CODE PE Clothing: K 5 th do not change clothes for PE, but must wear athletic shoes (even on special occasions like Red Ribbon Week, Lutheran Schools Week, and special dress days like Rodeo Dress Day and Fiesta Dress Day). Middle School PE classes and Athletic Practices - Silkscreened red gym shirt from Parker, or embroidered red dri-fit game day shirt from Concordia s vendor (visit our Athletics web page for the link: ). Students will wear black basketball-length shorts or black dri-fit running shorts with a white stripe such as Nike tempo shorts for girls (these may be purchased anywhere.) Cheerleading - Practice shorts with built-in undergarments, shirts, white cheer shoes, and white socks. Note: Coaches will share specific details about any additional practice and uniform requirements.for more detailed information, please see the Athletic Handbook. 3
Game Day Attire: Notes: Shoes must follow school guidelines Shirts can be worn un-tucked Items can only be purchased through Concordia s approved vendor (see Athletics web page: ) On game days, students that are participating on a 7 th or 8 th grade school (including 6 th graders that play up in football, soccer, volleyball, track, etc ) athletic team are allowed to wear the following: Option 1: School Uniform Option 2: CLS athletic sweat suit with red athletic dry-fit embroidered shirt (short sleeve or long sleeve) Shirts come in a variety of colors so be sure to choose red in the drop down box. Please keep in mind this is optional. Jackets are also optional, but students must have the red, dry-fit, embroidered shirts with black sweatpants to be in compliance with Option 2. The black sweatpants can be purchased from retail stores such as Academy or Target. Jackets and sweatshirts must follow Outerwear guidelines outlined in the student dress-code. Cheerleaders will wear their cheerleading warm ups, white cheerleading shoes, and white socks. CANCELLATION OF PRACTICES OR GAMES In the event that a practice or game is cancelled, the students will be permitted to use the school/athletic office phone to communicate that information to the parents. EXTRA-CURRICULAR LEARNING CENTER If your child does not regularly attend Learning Center but will need to do so for a sport season, please contact Mrs. Kirby in the school office in order to register for this. A fee of $ 35 is involved for each sport season. Fall season is Aug 19 - Oct 30, Winter season is Nov 2, Feb 12, Spring Season is Feb 15 April 29, Summer season is May 2 - May 26,
Eligibility for grades 5-8 Grades and/or conduct can make an athlete ineligible. To be Ineligible: 1. Two or more Academic Areas below a 70%, for any course (grades will be run at Progress Report and end of the quarter) 2. Three or more conduct based detentions or 5 total detentions during a 3 week period 3. Athletes must be in school by 12:00 noon (on a school day) to participate in a practice or a game unless excused in writing for attending a doctor s appointment, funeral, etc. If an athlete becomes ineligible, he or she will participate in practice and will be present for games. In accordance with league guidelines, participation in a game while ineligible will cause the game to be a forfeit. Code of Conduct for Coaches and Parents Parents, fans, and coaches represent Concordia Lutheran Church and School and should present themselves in a Christ-like manner. PARENT RESPONSIBILITIES TO THE TEAM In the spirit of Teamwork, parents are expected to actively participate in the duties necessary to the functioning of the sport in which their child plays. These duties include, but are not limited to: score clock operator, score book keeper, line judge, chain gang, admissions and concessions. These duties can be at home or away contests, regular season or tournaments. Training will be provided for those duties requiring special skills and/or knowledge. Parent-Coach Communication If you have anything to discuss with your child s coach, please make an appointment. Immediately prior to, during, or after a game is not the appropriate time. Please use the Matthew 18 principle in any areas of conflict. The rule of Christian love dictates the following procedure: 1. Pray for guidance and understanding. 2. Talk with the coach. If no understanding can be reached, proceed to Step Talk with the athletic director. If no understanding can be reached, proceed to Step Talk with the principal. 5
Administrator on Duty Concordia staff members will serve as administrators on duty for all home games. The administrator s main responsibility is to ensure that the event is conducted in a safe and Christ-like manner for players, coaches, officials, cheerleaders, and spectators. GUIDELINES FOR ATTENDING AFTERSCHOOL ATHLETIC EVENTS Students in attendance need to be supervised. If parents or legal guardian are not in attendance, please inform the event supervisor. Transportation Transportation to and from practices and/or games is the responsibility of the parents. Those wishing to carpool should make their own arrangements. Tournaments End of the season tournaments are offered in all sports, but not always at every grade level. If your grade level has an end of the season tournament, the dates will be noted on your regular season game schedule. Teams often participate in other tournaments during the course of the season as well as at the end of the season. These tournament dates will be noted on your regular season game schedule. Normally, there is a nominal fee for spectators. In addition, the Middle School Level teams may participate in Texas State Tournaments. The Lutheran Middle School Basketball Tournament of Texas (L.M.S.T.) is held in Tomball in February. The Lutheran Volleyball Championship of Texas Tournament (L.V.C.T) is held in Tomball, Texas in October. Due to the tournament format, a one or two night hotel stay is required. Parents are responsible for transportation, food and lodging costs. All students must have a parent/guardian in their hotel room unless their rooms are adjoining. The school will disseminate information and coordinate the hotel arrangements. National Tournaments Teams must earn advancement to a National tournament by placing 1 st, 2 nd, or 3 rd in that sport s State Tournament. In the event that there are two 8 th grade boys teams or two 8 th grade girls teams, and one team qualifies for Nationals, the 8 th graders from the other team will be given the opportunity to be added to the roster for Nationals. 6
Uniforms Sports teams in the K-6 Level sponsored by the school are given uniforms or T- shirts which the students keep at the end of the season. Middle School Level students are issued school owned uniforms in soccer, cross country, volleyball, basketball, baseball, and girls softball. Students are required to sign the uniforms out at the beginning of the season and sign them back in at the end. Students should only wear uniforms when participating in a scheduled game. Students will be assessed the replacement cost should the uniform be lost or ruined. Sports Awards Middle School Level (7-8grade) teams will have an Athletic Banquet in the spring. Athletes will be recognized for their participation and achievement in athletics. Concordia will provide an award for any school sponsored teams who come in first place. Each student who participates in a sport will be honored at Awards Day with either a ribbon or certificate. A PEP RALLY will be held at the beginning of each sport season. Additional pep rallies will be scheduled by the cheerleading coordinator. Fees A fee will be charged for each sport in accordance with league expenses and costs for that sport. This fee includes insurance, certain equipment, officials, awards, etc. A refund will be given up to the last day of sign up for the sport. Paying the fee will make the athlete eligible to participate and play in practices and games. Sports offered by Concordia Lutheran School K-8 Co-Ed Soccer (Fall) 6-8 Boys Football (Fall) 5-8 Girls Volleyball (Fall) 6-8 Boys and Girls Cross Country (Fall) K-8 Boys and Girls Basketball (Winter) 7-8 Boys Baseball (Spring) 7-8 Girls Fast-Pitch Softball (Spring) 6-8 Boys and Girls Track (Spring) 6-8 Boys and Girls Golf (Spring) 7
