1 CYBER SECURITY i-safe Lesson Plan Suggested Grade Level K Goal Learners will develop an understanding of the concept that computers can become infected with viruses, and the concept that one must use caution and seek help when opening . Students will engage in a group discussion moderated by the teacher, to provide exposure to the abstract concept of the computer virus. Students will complete a hands-on activity to express their ideas and to reinforce concepts introduced. Note: In the early elementary grades it is suggested that the i-safe lesson on Cyber Community Citizenship be completed before any other i-safe lessons. Materials / Preparation a copy of the Mini-booklet (pre-folded), and crayons, markers, or pencil for each student Youth Empowerment This learning unit will incorporate the core lesson activities into a correlated empowerment activity. Learners and instructors will choose a Youth Empowerment activity which best reflects their needs and interests. Assessment (Grades K 2) Assessment should be completed after implementation of the last i-safe lesson. In ilearn downloadable materials and in print versions of the curriculum, assessment instructions and student pages are located at the end of the lesson on personal safety. These materials are also found in the Downloads section of the i-safe K-5 Curriculum CD. LESSON PLAN with EXAMPLE DIALOGUE Introduction Today i-buddy is going to help you learn about how computers can get sick from the Cyber community. We are also going to learn about how to keep our computers from getting sick. We re ready to get started. Remember, we are going to learn and use some words that some of you may not know, so be sure to let me know if you don t understand a word. Review the Cyber Community First of all, let s review. Who can tell me what Cyberspace [vocabulary] is, and how we can get there? Provide time for student responses. Right, Cyberspace is the community [vocabulary] that you go to every time you use the Internet [vocabulary] on a computer. Activities in the cyber community are a lot like activities in the communities we live in. Both communities allow us to do things like write to each other, shop and play. Question: Can anyone remember one way we can write to each other in Cyberspace? Provide time for students to respond. ( - Gauge this part of the discussion to your students Internet experience level: Briefly discuss that on the Internet, people can write letters called .) 2006 i-safe Inc. Grade K 1

2 [vocabulary] is a letter that is sent over the Internet. You can read an letter on your computer instead of getting it from the real mailbox. Sending messaging is a great way to write to someone you and your parents know. Even if you don t send and receive yet, it s important to know about it. When you are thinking about staying safe on the Internet, you are also helping to keep your computer safe! You know a lot about computers already. Question: Did you know that a computer can get sick just like you can? Provide time for student responses. Today I ve got a story about i-buddy to tell you, and an i-buddy coloring booklet for you to work on. Pass out a copy of the mini-booklet to each student. The title of this booklet is called A New Kind of Virus. Write your name on the cover, and listen to the story. Read story: One day i-buddy was playing a game on the computer at his house, when all of a sudden, nothing worked. When his game stopped working, he tried clicking the mouse, but nothing happened. Then he tried pushing buttons, but nothing happened. Then the picture went away. i-buddy called for his mom, and when she came in she tried pushing buttons too, but nothing happened. i-buddy asked his mom what was wrong, but she didn t know. The next day they had to have a computer repair man come to the house. He had bad news for i-buddy s family. He said the computer had a virus [vocabulary]. i-buddy just didn t understand. The computer repairman explained to him that his computer was very sick, and that made i-buddy very sad. He asked, What made the computer sick? That s when i-buddy learned about viruses. Question: Does anyone know what a virus is? Provide time for student responses, and provide appropriate feedback. (A virus is a germ that can make you sick.) Question: How can people catch a virus, and what happens when they do? Provide time for student responses, and provide appropriate feedback. Include: You can catch a virus from someone else s (an infected person s) germs when they cough or sneeze on you. When a person catches, or becomes infected with, a virus, he or she becomes sick. When you have a virus you can t do the things you normally do, because your body doesn t feel well enough to work properly. Open your booklets to page 1. Read it along with me. It says When I have a virus, I am sick! Question: How do you think i-buddy feels when he is sick? Provide time for student responses i-safe Inc. Grade K 2

3 Present the concept: Computers can get viruses too, but they don t catch them from people s germs. Let s find out what i-buddy learned about computer viruses. Resume story: i-buddy didn t know what a computer virus was so the computer repair man told him about them. He said that a virus is a type of computer program [vocabulary]. He explained that a computer program is what makes the computer do things, like the game i- Buddy was playing. The game was a good kind of computer program. A virus is a very bad kind of computer program. It makes the computer sick. It destroys good programs, and sometimes the computer even stops working just like i-buddy s did. Sometimes a virus just makes computers do strange things, like make good programs disappear or not work right. Question: Does anyone how a computer can get a virus? Provide time for students to respond, and provide appropriate feedback. Resume story: i-buddy found out from his computer repair man that sometimes computers get computer viruses from messages that hide in . Review: What did we say an is? (A letter sent on the computer.) Look at page 2 of your booklet and read along with me. When a computer has a virus, it won t work! Question: What do you think about somebody who would send an e- mail on purpose that had a virus in it to hurt your computer? Would a good cyber citizen do this? (No) Provide time for student responses and provide appropriate feedback. Sending a computer virus on purpose is really just the same as trying to break a computer with a hammer! Question: Do you know how to keep viruses away from your computer? Provide time for student responses, and provide appropriate feedback. Reinforce: The best way to keep your computer from catching a virus is never to try to open an letter without help from your parents. That s the best way you can keep a computer virus from making your computer sick. You will be a hero for your whole family if you keep a virus from attacking your computer! Read page 3, the back of your booklets: Be a hero! Be a hero by asking for help before you try to use . Resume story: i-buddy learned that the best way to make sure his computer doesn t get sick is to never open an from someone without asking for help from his parents or his teacher first. Conclude story: i-buddy was so happy when his computer was finally fixed! Now he is very careful to remember what he learned about computer viruses. He wants all of his friends to know how to keep their computers healthy! Question: Do you think i-buddy was being a hero? Provide time for student responses i-safe Inc. Grade K 3

4 Question: Do you think being a hero is also being a good cyber citizen? Why? Provide time for student responses. Review Now you know how to keep your computer safe from a virus. Can you help me remember some of the things you learned today? I m going to ask you some questions now. Help me remember the answers. 1. What do we call something that can harm a computer or make it sick? 2. What can hide in an ? 3. What can happen to a computer that becomes infected with a virus? 4. How can you be a hero and prevent computer viruses from infecting your computer? Culminating Activity Play a selection from the i-safe songs. Empowerment in Action You know a lot about computer viruses! You can have some time now to color your booklets. Take your booklets home and tell your families everything you learned today. They will be surprised how Cyber smart you are. Dramatic play/game lesson extension activity Students act out what they have learned. Designate someone to be the computer, someone to be an adult, and someone to be the hero (or i-buddy). Arrange the hero in front of the computer (crouching down) Tell the computer to announce: An message has arrived. Open it up right away! Ask the hero to be a good cyber citizen and protect his computer from a virus attack. Tell him to show the class what he or she would do. (The correct response is to call for help from the adult) Adult comes in and says, I ll be glad to help you. Provide positive feedback; replay with different students. Conclusion Complete the Assessment activity if this is the last i-safe lesson to be implemented. Please submit photographs of students who create exceptional youth empowerment projects, for special recognition from i-safe. Photographs must be accompanied by corresponding personal release forms.
