4 CALIFORNIA STATE STANDARDS ARE Research and evidence based Clear, understandable, and consistent Aligned with college and career expectations Based on rigorous content and the application of knowledge through higher-order thinking skills Built upon the strengths and lessons of current state standards Informed by other top-performing countries to prepare all students for success in our global economy and society They seek to better prepare students across the nation for college and careers, raising both expectations and achievement in every state that chooses to adopt them. They begin in Kindergarten with the END in MIND of what students REALLY need to know and to do in order to be successful in COLLEGE, CAREER and LIFE.
5 WHY? The world is changing We don t know what tomorrow s jobs will be, but we do know that our future depends on a strong workforce and today s schools have to prepare kids to be part of it. Our state needs a school system that prepares students for the modern economy by building the critical thinking, and problem solving skills that can be applied in any context. That s the idea behind the Common Core standards; they are guidelines that will help schools focus on that kind of deeper, richer, more applicable learning.
6 CCSS IN THE CLASSROOM More hands-on activities, project based learning, and collaborative exercises More focus on nonfiction texts Media skills will be integrated Assessments will evaluate higher order processes Deeper exploration of concepts More real-world applications and fewer theoretical equations
7 MATHEMATICS Elementary: - standards lay a solid foundation in whole numbers, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, and decimals. - support a student s ability to learn and apply more demanding math concepts and procedures. Middle school and high school: - practice applying mathematical ways of thinking to realworld issues and challenges. - prepare students to think and reason mathematically. - set a rigorous definition of college and career readiness by demanding that students develop a depth of understanding and ability to apply mathematics to novel situations, as college students and employees regularly do.

13 AND AT HOME Kindergarten Use math words like more, less and equal during every day conversation. Encourage children to explain their thinking when completing a math problem. Ask them if they can solve it a different way. Ask children why or how they know an answer to a math problem. Use student mistakes as a learning tool. 1 st Grade Practice math facts! Math timed tests are available to print on the first grade website. Continue to review work in Friday Folders. 2 nd Grade Use cubes to help solve word problems and remember to label what your answer represents 3 rd Grade Students should know their addition and subtractions facts fluently. Make sure your student learns the multiplication and division facts fluently. Use cubes to help solve word problems and remember to label what your answer represents Check your student s homework and Friday folder. Help them review any missed answers. It is OK to show your student a different way to solve a problem. Make sure they can explain their thinking. Consistently ask your student to explain their thinking. Go to third grade website and look for the Go Math website
14 AND AT HOME 4 th Grade Support the methods of the classroom instruction if one needs assistance, go to K6 Think Central and look at the reteach pages, math on the spot videos, and the textbook for examples. We are focusing on processes to help expand the student s abilities. With today s technology, mere computation is easily replaced with smartphones, software, and other computers. Students can use the discussion section of CANVAS to ask others for help, post videos that will help others, or watch additional videos that the teacher has posted. If the parents and students are struggling, please contact the teacher to set up a meeting. 5 th Grade Understand that we are developing an in-depth comprehension of number sense. Understand that we are learning new and different ways to approach problems. We are giving students multiple strategies to solve those problems. Listen to the kids. Let them teach you! Encourage your child to persevere and embrace the productive struggle. Use the Think Central website: Math on The Spot Videos Embrace the 8 Mathematical Practices of the Common Core standards. 6 th Grade Enroll in the Springboard 6 th Grade Canvas page. On this page you will find links to Khan Academy Videos that are aligned with each Springboard chapter as well as access to the online textbook. Review class notes and problem examples in Math Notebooks for procedural review. To review for conceptual tests, look over embedded assessments in the textbook at the end of the unit.
