Park Lawn 2010 Annual Report
Dear Friends, While the book is closed on fiscal year 2009/2010, its impact on furthering Park Lawn s ongoing mission of service remains. Despite the economic uncertainties we all continue to bear, our focus on adaptation and opportunity has strengthened both our resolve and vision. Park Lawn is a vital organization with a sound foundation, true to its founding principles, concerned about today, yet focused on tomorrow - always tomorrow We realize that long term success will continue to be underpinned yet never fully achieved solely through governmental funding. Our dedicated and talented board of directors has embraced a strategic plan that emphasizes reduced reliance on public funding through entrepreneurial outreach and partnering to secure new and expanded private funding streams and shared resources. We are retooling many of our fund raising events to enhance visibility and profit. Planned giving seminars are underway for our member families and friends. We increasingly share volunteers and event planning with the Village of Oak Lawn and the Children s Museum and other community institutions and benefit from such affiliations in many ways. We partnered with a sister organization, Seguin Services, in a successful joint fund raising event and an ongoing automobile donation program. Our University internship programs continue to grow as well. Building upon our vocational service subcontract expertise, we now have three additional independent order fulfillment and document shredding product lines. And there s more. Fiscal year 2009/2010 also saw further fruition of Park Lawn s collaboration with other quality providers of services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. We partner with nine organizations through Intersect for Ability which has allowed for significant program enhancement and increased foundation and grant funding for its members. Additionally Park Lawn is also a founding member of a six member south suburban collaboration, Community Service Partners, dedicated to cost reduction and efficiency through sharing. It is now up and running. Centralized information technology infrastructure and service and common staff training activities are already in place transportation, software, insurance, bulk purchasing and more is under review. Implementation will be ongoing. Yes, best business practice and forward thinking is certainly a requirement for success in today s world. While true at Park Lawn, its value would be of little value if it did not directly benefit those we serve. They are the only real purpose for us to be in business.i believe that your review of this annual report will attest that Park Lawn remains true to that mission in all that we do. Looking back helps us to better understand how to best proceed. Advocates like you have been with us throughout our history. We know that you too believe in and are committed to our ongoing mission. We are ever so grateful. Your compassion and support allows us to proceed with confidence. Sincerely, Jonathan Perry Board President James R. Weise Executive Director Throughout this publication we are pleased to introduce some of the individuals who currently benefit from the services Park Lawn provides. Their successes motivate us to address future challenges.
Fiscal Year 2009/2010 Highlights More than 450 individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities benefit from Park Lawn s vocational and residential programs. Park Lawn was awarded a three year accreditation renewal by CARF, a national accreditation commission More than 150 families benefit from the Building Bridges for the Future Program collaboration to better understand the options for their student with special needs after high school. More than 90 adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities lived in one of Park Lawn s 9 residential facilities. Park Lawn welcomed 2 new board members, new finance director and development director. Park Lawn became a part of Community Service Partners collaboration between non profit organizations Sertoma Centre, Southwest Community Services, New Hope, Southstar and Charleston Transitional Services. 22 Park Lawn participants volunteered for 9 Chicago suburban non profit organizations to strengthen their skills while waiting for community employment. 16 companies employed 24 Park Lawn adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Through a grant from Access to Recovery and Reinvestment Act, Park Lawn found employment for 8 individuals with developmental disabilities. Park Lawn began 7 collaborative program grant projects with other like-minded non profits supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Who we are, What We Do. Park Lawn s mission is to provide services that promote independence, choice and access to community living for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
We believe that people with disabilities earnestly wish to live a normal life. They want to go to school, hold a job that truly needs to be done, a place to live in comfort, and they want a full and active social life. Within this context Park Lawn provides adult developmental training, vocational programs and residential services. All are backed with professional staff support. Independence Through Park Lawn s Vocational Services, individuals enter a program and gain skills, dexterity and experience to continuously have a goal to move to a job more challenging and suited to their interests and ability. Choice If a worker encounters difficulty performing their duties, adjusting to the environment, or has a health issue, they temporarily transfer to a program that addresses their immediate needs and return to their job when ready. This flexibility maximizes the time spent in the work place. Access to Community Living: As individuals aged or became orphaned, the need for residential placement became apparent. Park Lawn s 9 residential facilities are attuned to the capabilities and interests of the residents. Whenever possible, under the guidance of caring staff, residents participate in household activities, complete chores, and schedule social activities. Park Lawn s History Park Lawn was founded in 1955 by a small group of parents who decided that the national and state legislatures that deemed their children uneducable because of mental retardation were naïve to their true potential. These visionaries were determined to provide education for their children and began by holding classes at the First Congregational Church of Oak Lawn. As more families joined more space was needed and classes were moved to the First United Methodist Church of Evergreen Park. By 1968 the group raised enough private and state funds to hire staff and construct a permanent school in Oak Lawn. As their children grew and their abilities increased, Park Lawn expanded its programs to meet their needs. Today, more than 450 individuals pursue a life of productivity, independence and happiness through their participation in a variety of programs including Park Lawn s adult developmental training, workshop, supported employment, job placement, high school transition, senior program and nine residential facilities, home based services, senior retirement, and a variety of social opportunities. Park Lawn is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization providing programs and services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities since Park Lawn is accredited by CARF: The Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities.
Park Lawn Promotes Independence When one is diagnosed with a form of an intellectual and developmental disability it means chronic physical or mental impairment as a result of natural or accidental causes. At Park Lawn, it does not matter what type of disability one may have, what matters is the commitment of to the network of resources available to promote independence for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Park Lawn s trained staff guides participants through each aspect of their daily lives doing tasks with them, not for or to them. Each Park Lawn participant receives goals toward more independence through Park Lawn s Developmental Training Services. This program is certified by the U.S. and Illinois Departments of Labor. The goals are basic for level one, Park Lawn s Adult Developmental Training (ADT) program, which consists of our most intellectually challenged adults age 18 and older. Some ADT participants work on identifying numbers, letters, colors and signs. Others learn skills by repetitive motion such as buttoning a shirt, combing ones hair, sitting erect, or eating without assistance. Individuals that have accomplished the basic goals are encouraged to move forward to Park Lawn s Vocational Services. A team of highly qualified staff help program participants with their individual goals to develop useful job skills, good work habits and the ability to complete job assignments within required timeframes. Through this training they derive a great deal of satisfaction from fulfilling sub-contract work for companies such as Nordstrom, Murphy Beds, TEC Tool, Dermaide and others. They complete a variety of jobs including document shredding, packaging, heat sealing, display assembly, collating, sorting and more. In return, they receive a salary with benefits of paid vacations, sick days and holidays. Classes are incorporated into the work day and assist workshop participants in coping with daily situations and relationships. Time management, grooming, and getting along with co-workers are a few of the topics covered to help achieve their individual goals. The primary goal for Park Lawn s Vocational Services is to improve functional and social skills that lead to greater self-sufficiency and independence.
In order for Park Lawn participants to better understand their abilities in life, they need choices. Park Lawn s Supported Employment Program (SEP) and Community Employment Services (CES) are programs that give individuals a choice to work in their local community. Some positions held include clerical, data entry, food service, janitorial and cleaning, assembly, mail processing and production work. SEP and CES are mutually beneficial because businesses gain qualified and dedicated employees; while workers gain self-esteem and the satisfaction that they are a contributing force within their communities. When Park Lawn participants are ready for SEP, and waiting for employment, they have the choice to volunteer in the community to keep their skills sharp. Local non profits and businesses that benefit from their commitment including Share Your Soles, Toy Box Connection, Children s Museum in Oak Lawn, Palos Library, St. Xavier University, Alsip Park District and more. Program participants gain satisfaction knowing that their hard work helps organizations in the community. Eligible students with special needs from a local high school district receive an idea of the choices available in the future through participation in Park Lawn s High School Transition Program. During the district s summer session, Park Lawn s vocational training department staff provides a thirty day vocational enrichment program working on a variety of skills including academic, functional living and more. Most students participating in the summer session continue with Park Lawn throughout the school year by attending vocational training services for half of their academic day. Upon graduation from high school, students may qualify for full time services through the many vocational options available at Park Lawn. The need for active treatment continues throughout the many phases of each individual s life. With this in mind, Park Lawn provides a choice through the Senior Program that is for individuals currently enrolled in workshop programming and whose medical condition or advanced age make attendance in the vocational setting inappropriate. Park Lawn s emphasis on this program is to develop a new way to assist older adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Activities include simple exercises, listening to music, reading the local news and more. The values of this program emphasize one s respect, flexibility, stimulation, safety, dignity and validation. Park Lawn Promotes Choice
Park Lawn Promotes Access to Community Living Like most people, Park Lawn s participants look forward to going home after a day of work or program activities. Many individuals return to the nurturing environment of their family home. Others return to the comforts and camaraderie at one of Park Lawn s nine residential homes. Park Lawn s residential facilities are attuned to the capabilities and interests of the residents. Whenever possible, under the guidance of caring staff, residents participate in household activities, complete chores, and schedule social activities. Park Lawn Center (PLC) is an intermediate care facility that provides twenty-four hour supervision and medical services. It is home to forty-one individuals with profound cognitive challenges and complex medical needs. With staff assistance, residents make choices within their living environment and participate in leisure activities. Fifteen people reside at Park Lawn Homes where residents aided by staff, cooperatively complete household duties such as meal planning and preparation, shopping, laundry, upkeep of their bedrooms and planning leisure activities. Residents flourish in this environment gaining self-confidence and esteem. Seven Community Integrated Living Arrangements (CILA) are owned and operated by Park Lawn. An average of five to six residents lives in each of the single family homes which are located throughout the southwest suburbs. CILAs provide the greatest opportunity for independent living. With staff guidance, residents have a voice in decisions regarding the running of their household. They plan and prepare meals, clean and upkeep the property, and plan leisure and social activities. Park Lawn also provides for Intermittent CILA. Such individuals receive part time support services while residing in their natural family home.
