4 KS 2 Years 3/4 Twelve Royal Weddings The wedding of to Kate Middleton will be the twelfth royal wedding since Queen Victoria married Prince Albert. Here are the royal dozen : 1840 Queen Victoria married Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg in the Chapel Royal at St James Palace. They went on to have nine children and 42 grandchildren King George V, then the Duke of York and Queen Victoria s grandson, married Queen Mary in the Chapel Royal at St James Palace. Mary was formerly Princess Mary of Teck in the Kingdom of Württemberg, Germany King George VI married Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon (later the Queen Mother) in Westminster Abbey Queen Elizabeth II married Prince Philip in Westminster Abbey Photographer Antony Armstrong-Jones married Princess Margaret, the Queen s sister, in Westminster Abbey Captain Mark Phillips married Princess Anne, the Queen s only daughter, in Westminster Abbey. The couple later divorced. In 1992 Anne married Timothy Lawrence, a commander in the Royal Navy, at Balmoral Castle in Scotland. Anne s daughter, Zara, announced her engagement to rugby player, Mike Tindall, in December Prince Charles, The Prince of Wales, married Lady Diana Spencer (later Diana, Princess of Wales) at St Paul s Cathedral. The couple divorced in 1996, one year before Diana tragically died in a car accident in Paris Prince Andrew (later the Duke of York) married Sarah Ferguson in Westminster Abbey. The couple had two daughters, Beatrice and Eugenie, before getting divorced in HRH Prince Edward married Sophie Rhys-Jones in St George s Chapel in Windsor Castle. The couple became the Earl and Countess of Wessex. Their daughter Louise will be one of Kate Middleton s bridesmaids HRH The Prince Of Wales, Prince Charles, married Camilla Parker Bowles, the Duchess of Cornwall, in Windsor Guildhall Peter Phillips, the eldest grandson of Queen Elizabeth II and son of Princess Anne, married Autumn Kelly at St George s Chapel in Windsor Prince William, the second in line to the throne, marries Catherine (Kate) Middleton at Westminster Abbey. 21

6 KS 2 Year 5/6 Making Promises When Prince William get married, they will make a promise to one another. This is known as exchanging vows. This is what William is likely to say to Kate: I, William Arthur Philip Louis, take you, Catherine Elizabeth, to be my wife, to have and to hold, from this day forward; for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death us do part. Imagine that you were making a promise to someone perhaps your mum or dad, sister or brother or your best friend. What do you think you would say?
