1 University Press Scholarship Online You are looking at 1-10 of 11 items for: keywords : school health The Domains and Demands of School Social Work Practice: A Guide to Working Effectively with Students, Families, and Schools Michael S Kelly Published in print: 2008 Published Online: January 2009 ISBN: eisbn: Item type: book acprof:oso/ School social work enters its 2nd century as a profession still conflicted about its central mission. Are school social workers meant to be inhouse clinicians providing services to kids in need, or are they meant to be involved in program development to enhance the social and emotional learning of all students in a school? How much time should they devote to serving whole families, or consulting with teachers? Whatever school social workers claim to do in their schools, it s clear that they are going to have to prove that they are effective doing it. The demands of federal legislation and state requirements for certification are making it increasingly necessary that school social workers demonstrate that they are highly qualified school-based mental health and social service professionals who can demonstrate outcomes that impact school bottom line issues like student achievement, attendance, and behavior. Rather than recoil from this pressure, school social workers can utilize the skills of evidence based practice (EBP) to help them enhance both their effectiveness and their knowledge of interventions that work to help students, teachers, parents, and staff in school contexts. This book demonstrates how EBP can be integrated into school social worker s daily practice, advancing the debate about where social workers can and should intervene, and how to do so effectively. Highlighting primary clinical issues, family problems, and school-wide needs faced by school social workers, helps practitioners make the best use of evidence to be flexible, effective advocates at all levels of practice. 2 Health Services at School: Environmental Considerations Julia Graham Lear in Safe and Healthy School Environments Published in print: 2006 Published Online: September 2009 ISBN: eisbn: acprof:oso/ Health services provided at schools represent an opportunity not only to safeguard the health of students in general but also to promote environmental health. This chapter begins with an overview of school health services, describing the people, the facilities, and the clinical services. It then turns to aspects of school health services relevant to safe and healthy environments. Maternal, neonatal, and child health John Walley and Nancy Gerein in Public Health: An action guide to improving health Published in print: 2010 Published Online: May 2010 ISBN: eisbn: acprof:oso/ This chapter discusses the following topics: the burden of disease, historical development of maternal, neonatal and child health (MNCH) services; the MNCH package of interventions, the integrated management of childhood illness (IMCI); the expanded programme of immunization (EPI); nutrition; school health; family planning; and quality of MNCH services. Safe and Healthy School Environments Howard Frumkin, Robert Geller, I. Leslie Rubin, and Janice Nodvin (eds) Published in print: 2006 Published Online: September 2009 ISBN: eisbn: Item type: book acprof:oso/ School is the child's workplace. Children spend many of their waking hours at school, in circumstances that are often suboptimal. There may be excessive crowding, poor indoor air quality, unsatisfactory lighting, or exposure to hazardous chemicals. Violence may threaten children's safety. Outside the school, the playground may be dangerous, and on the way to school, children may face risks, whether they walk, bicycle, Page 2 of 6

3 or ride the bus. Safe and healthy schools offer many benefits. They protect children's health. They enhance learning. They are pleasant places to be. Finally, safe and healthy schools are often environmentally friendly schools, which use less energy, produce fewer pollutants, and model environmental responsibility for teachers and students. This book provides an overview of the school environment, from the perspective of environmental public health. It includes chapters on the physical environment (such factors as crowding, lighting, and noise), air quality within and outside the school, toxic exposures, nutrition and physical activity, violence and disasters, and transportation. It also includes chapters on management issues and on health services at schools. Childhood Obesity Prevention: International Research, Controversies and Interventions Jennifer A. O'Dea and Michael Eriksen (eds) Published in print: 2010 Published Online: January 2011 ISBN: eisbn: Item type: book acprof:oso/ This book brings together up-to-date research and experience of some of the most highly regarded childhood obesity prevention researchers, practitioners, and theorists. Controversial issues include whether or not schools should measure students' weight for height; how researchers can properly measure and interpret such data whilst taking into account its many limitations; what to do (or not to do) with any data collected; how best to involve school staff and teachers; and whether to combine childhood obesity prevention within the broader prevention of eating disorders, dieting, and disordered eating. The first section of the book highlights the relationship between obesity, social disadvantage, and poverty. Section 2 reports on current prevalence trends from Western Europe, Canada, Scandinavia, the USA, Australia, Asia, South Africa, Brazil, and the Middle East. The most appropriate and suitable preventive initiatives are discussed. Section 3 deals with debates and issues including how to combine clinical treatment with prevention; include health professionals; engage and empower community members; understand how health education and health promotion theory can be utilized; and which public health lessons can be utilized to approach childhood obesity prevention. Examination of the lessons learned from the prevention of tobacco use are outlined and debated. A chapter about the Singaporean schools project illustrates how to avoid adverse outcomes such as opposition from parents, body image problems, and eating disorders. Section 4 presents a broad range of interventions to date; suitable school-based approaches; interventions involving parents; Page 3 of 6

4 physical activity interventions; and the design and implementation of culturally appropriate childhood obesity interventions. Promoting Social Justice Through Education In Public Health Robert S. Lawrence in Social Injustice and Public Health Published in print: 2005 Published Online: September 2009 ISBN: eisbn: acprof:oso/ This chapter describes how social justice can be promoted through education in public health. It discusses principles of social justice and education in public health, including the logic of science added to moral and ethical reasons for social justice and the historical context of social justice and public health. It describes how education in public health can be used to promote social justice and puts forward an agenda for action. Schooling and Child Health in Antebellum New England Rebecca R. Noel in Children and Youth in a New Nation Published in print: 2009 Published Online: March 2016 ISBN: eisbn: Publisher: NYU Press DOI: /nyu/ This chapter explores new ways of contributing to the health of children through the public school systems in the new republic. From the 1820s through the 1850s, reformers in New England launched an ambitious program to improve child health, and they chose the expanding system of public and private schools as their mechanism. The common denominator of antebellum school health reform measures was the effort to install expert knowledge as a mediator between children and their bodily self-perception, and at times between parents and children's bodies. The new emphasis on secularized textbooks produced by experts with the intent of educating children about the ways their bodies worked foreshadowed the early twentieth-century campaigns of Progressive-era scientists. 5 Mental Health Consultation Christine Anlauf Sabatino in Consultation Theory and Practice: A Handbook for School Social Workers Published in print: 2014 Published Online: April 2014 ISBN: eisbn: Page 5 of 6 acprof:oso/ This chapter defines mental health consultation and discusses how to help school personnel master emotional reactions, develop cognitive awareness, and improve problem-solving skills to promote, prevent, and remediate mental health issues affecting school success. It includes information on how to expand school personnel s ability to understand the social and emotional components of the teaching-learning process that impede academic and behavioral success by increasing their mental health knowledge, skills, confidence, and objectivity. The chapter includes a case example to illustrate the main concepts of mental health consultation. It discusses how the model is consistent with all three levels of the RtI framework, including individual, targeted, and universal services. Suggested readings and resources are offered for the school social worker who wishes to learn more about mental health consultation theory and practice. Education Antonia Keung in The well-being of children in the UK Published in print: 2011 Published Online: March 2012 ISBN: eisbn: Publisher: Policy Press DOI: / policypress/ This chapter describes the educational attainment of children across the UK. It examines how attainment varies by age, gender, ethnicity and social class. Additionally, it reviews how schoolchildren feel about their well-being at school by drawing attention to the research findings from The Children's Society survey on young people's well-being and the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) survey. Research findings on the relationship between social background and educational outcome are also briefly reported. The chapter then elaborates the prevalence of educational disaffection through reviewing data on truancy, school exclusion and young people not in education, employment or training (NEET). The latest data and analysis on special educational needs (SEN) are finally shown. There is no sign of improvement in educational mobility of children from a lower social class

6 background, and this in turn is likely to work against the government's efforts in promoting social mobility. Introduction Eli Ginzberg in Teaching Hospitals and the Urban Poor Published in print: 2000 Published Online: October 2013 ISBN: eisbn: Publisher: Yale University Press DOI: /yale/ An academic health center (AHC) consists of a medical school and one or more health professional schools. These schools are joined to one or more affiliated teaching hospitals that are under common ownership or closely aligned with the medical school. This book focuses on the academic health centers (AHCs) that provide medical care to the urban poor. The urban poor belong to a group of people with income below the federal level of poverty and people who are uninsured. The book centers primarily on the relationship between AHCs and the urban poor subsequent to the passage of Medicare and Medicaid. Page 6 of 6
