2 HM 101: Public Health 101 (undergraduate course) Provides an overview of public health with an emphasis on the population perspective and the crosscutting, systems thinking or ecologic nature of public health, including the population effects of health care systems. HM 801: Introduction to Public Health Philosophy and concepts of discipline of public health. History and development of the profession. Ethical, legal, and political considerations. Provides first introduction to core public health areas. HM 802: Biostatistics for Public Health Data management, analysis, and presentation of public health data. Techniques and methods for calculating population based statistics. Instruction using Epi Info software package. HM 803: Epidemiology and Public Health Distributions and determinants of disease in population. Epidemiologic research, quantitative methods, study designs pros/cons. HM 804: Public Health Administration Planning, organization, administration, management, evaluation, and policy analysis of public health. Legal and ethical considerations of public health. HM 805: Social and Behavioural Aspects of Public Health Concepts and methods of social and behavioural sciences applied to public health problems and issues. HM 806: Environmental Factors of Health Biological, physical, and chemical factors that affect health of populations. Regulatory approaches to environmental hazards. Potential impact of environmental agents on health and preventive management approaches. HM 830: Practical Applications of Public Health Law Overview of legal basis of public health authority, use of law to direct public health practice. HM 831: Communicable Disease in Public Health Describe elements involved with communicable disease transmission. Identify and design methods to prevent and/or control the spread of communicable disease. HM 832: Global Public Health Factors and dynamics that affect global public health. Application of public health principles and policies in international settings. Incorporation of cultural dynamics into public health practice. HM 833: Introduction to Pharmaceutical Counterfeiting and Public Health This course introduces the student to the growing threat of counterfeit pharmaceuticals and associated risks to public health. The course provides a multidisciplinary perspective of counterfeiting that includes Supply Chain, Packaging and Criminal Justice. This encompasses the economic motivation for organized criminals, government sponsored criminals and terrorists. The course also presents an in depth review of the unique risks posed by counterfeits at both the patient and population levels. HM 834: Advanced Counterfeit Pharmaceuticals Readings This course advances students basic understanding of counterfeit pharmaceuticals and enables them to apply this knowledge base toward their particular areas of interest (e.g., criminal justice, legislation, clinic and public health aspects, risk management, communication, prevention, etc.). 3 professionalize students through scholarly research, peer collaboration and presentation skills. HM 835: Independent Study in Public Health* Independent study in areas relevant to public health. *Approval is needed prior to enrolling in this course. HM 836: Comparative Global Healthcare Systems Public health and culture, environment, psychosocial and economic issues. Healthcare systems and health policies. Community health assessments. HM 837: Poverty and Public Health This course provides an in depth examination of the concepts of health and poverty and their interrelatedness from a global and public health perspective. HM 838: Cultural Aspects of Public Health Practice This course 1) examines the cultural factors and dynamics that affect the health and health status of human populations, and 2) apply knowledge of these cultural concepts to improve public health practice in domestic and international settings. HM 839: Water and Public Health: A Global Perspective Water is central to human survival and plays a primal role in causing and spreading diseases. This course provides a broad, global examination of the role of water in public health, focusingon the global crisis of water quantity and quality. HM 840: Public Health Finance Examines the acquisition, utilization, and management of resources for the delivery of public health functions and the impact of those resources on population health and the public health system; includes study of the supply and demand of healthcare resources and the impact of healthcare on a population. HM 841: Public Health Policy Students receive an overview of the component elements of the US healthcare delivery and financing systems and their contributions to improving health status. Students also choose one aspect of the healthcare delivery/financing system in which they have an interest to research in greater depth. HM 842: Introduction to Public Health Informatics This course provides public health students a framework for understanding the field of informatics. Informatics is three fold comprising of computer information systems, statistics, and health practice. Public Health Informatics can improve health care by effectively using information technology within public health practices and research HM 843: Methods in Public Health Informatics Theory, processes and applications of management information systems and how they relate to public health management, project management skills for information system implementation and evaluation HM 844: Legal/Ethical Issues in Public Health Informatics This course details the legal and ethical considerations concerning the use of health information in public health practice and research. HM 845: Informatics and Information Technology This course provides; information technology for health informatics systems, principles of relational database systems, operations, information systems, data sets, data standards and classification systems. 3 06/19/12
4 HM 846: Advanced Topics in Public Health Informatics Management Research, evaluation and applications of informatics in public health HM 847: Healthcare in Ghana: A Public Health Perspective (4 credits) Overview of major public health issues and the health care system, both Western and traditional, in Ghana HM 848: Preparation for Healthcare in Ghana (1 credit) This course prepares students or public health study abroad experiences in Ghana. HM 849: Healthcare in Brazil: A Public Health Perspective (8 credits) Overview of major public health issues and the health care system in Brazil. The course is based in Salvador, Brazil. HM 851: ehealth and Telemedicine in Public Health: Domestic and International Applications This course investigates what ehealth, telemedicine and mhealth have to offer to the field of public health and how organizations, domestic and international, are using telemedicine applications to benefit the public health. HM 852: Outbreak Investigations in Public Health This course covers ways to fight against illness from food contaminants or a possible pandemic, how to investigate outbreaks and control them, and how to prevent similar outbreaks in the future from a public health perspective. HM 853: Public Health Program/Intervention Evaluation The principal objectives of this course are to develop a basic understanding of and capacity to perform evaluations of public health programs/interventions. HM 854: Health Equity Framework for Public Health Practice This course provides a social justice/health equity framework for the practice of public health. The elimination of root causes of persistent health disparity across race, class, gender, and other forms of difference are analyzed. HM 856: Environmental Public Health: Assessment and Response Provides students with a conceptual foundation, practical skills and exposure to community based methodologies for identifying and assessing environmental issues and developing strategies for improvement. HM 857: International Experience in Mexico (1 credit taken in conjunction with SW credits total) International public health field experience designed to provide students exposure to the culture and health problems facing local communities through hands on practical experience in Mexico. HM 858: Occupational Health and Safety in Public Health This course is an introduction to the major concepts and issues in occupational health and safety from a public health perspective. HM 859: Making a Community Diagnosis (1 credit) This self paced course is designed to introduce students to the assessment function of public health. In particular it helps students learn concepts and develop skills necessary to conduct community health assessments, both nationally and globally. 4 06/19/12
5 HM 860: Migrant, Refugee & Mobile Populations: Impact on Public Health This course is designed to introduce to students and public health professionals, to a survey of core public health issues relevant to immigrant, refugee and mobile populations. HM 861: Introduction to Public Health Nutrition in the United States Biological principles of nutrition and physical activity with a public health focus. HM 863: Parasitic Diseases in Developing Countries Describes parasitic diseases of public health importance impacting the lives of those living in developing countries. Topics covered include: Parasite biology, epidemiology, pathogenesis, treatment, control and elimination, program development, economic and social burdens. HM 864: Intersections of Humans and Animals Epidemiology and preventive medicine disease control methods for the control of infectious diseases and environmental health issues shared by animals and people. HM 865: Vitamins and Minerals: Hidden Hunger Introduction to vitamin and mineral nutrition, including biological roles, human requirements, and consequences of deficiency. Current issues regarding specific micronutrient status in U.S. and worldwide. Discussion of current and proposed population based interventions. HM 866: US Healthcare Access and Delivery HM 867: Demography, Population Dynamics, Population Data and Public Health Methods and concepts in the study of population change. Analytical approaches for analyzing and interpreting population changes. Applications in planning, policy making and administration. HM 868: Integrated Research Study Design and Informatics Introduction to clinical trial phases, research design, informatics aims, informatics platforms and datum lifecycle. HM 869: Psychiatry and Public Health: A Bio Psycho Social Perspective An overview of common psychiatric diagnoses across the ages is presented. The sociological and economic determinants of treatment and outcomes are highlighted. The systems of care model is discussed with special emphasis on Community Mental health and the Mental Health Code. The course is intended to provide a biopsycho social model of mental health and mental illness. HM 871: Vaccine Preventable Diseases of Public Health Importance Students gain an understanding of vaccine preventable diseases of importance to the publics health and the global community. Basic epidemiology, surveillance, vaccine updates, status of the vaccination program at the national and global level, the associated cost and benefits of the programs, and related public health policies for such diseases. HM 872: Global Public Health in Action HM 873: Maternal and Child Health: Global Public Health Perspectives Historical and cultural foundations, health care needs, health determinants and disparities, programs, policies and public health issues affecting women and children are discussed. Topics incorporate major health problems and health status within the developmental cycles of children and the life cycle of women. HM 874: Critical Thinking for Public Health Practitioners* 5 06/19/12
6 Provides students with a thorough conceptual foundation and develops practical skills for understanding what critical thinking is and is not, how to avoid cognitive biases, learn strategies and tools that protect against faulty reasoning, poor problem solving, and flawed decision making. *THIS COURSE IS DELIVERED IN A ONE WEEK INTENSIVE SETTING IN OKEMOS, MICHIGAN WITH A PAPER DUE AFTER THE COURSE. ALL STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO ATEND IN PERSON MARCH 26 30, HM 875: Applications of Open Source Information on Public Health Intelligence This highly applied course develops a student capable of accepting or rejecting a hypothesis based on intelligence produced through the exploitation of open source information meeting the needs of information and intelligence within the CDC, and Departments of Health; as well as other departments which could be affected during an epidemic outbreak. HM 876: Nutrition and Chronic Diseases: Living Longer and Healthier HM 877: Public Health Nutrition and the Life Stages HM 878: Applied Biostatistics for Public Health Practioners HM 879 Ethnographic Approaches to Public Health Practice HM 881 Pathogenesis of Parasitic Infections Important to Public Health HM 882 Public Health Nutrition: Assessment and Development of Population based Interventions HM 883 Mobile Technology, Social Media and Games in Public Health HM 884 Decision Making and Technology Assessment in Healthcare and Public Health HM 885 Health Information Technology and Telehealth Technology as Applied to Public Health HM 886 Public Health Diagnosis and Interpretation of Parasitic Infections HM 887 Control and Eradication of Parasitic Infections of Public Health Importance HM 888 Field Methodology for Investigating Parasitic Diseases of Public Health Importance HM 889 Applied Epidemiological Methods for Public Health Practitioners HM 891: Introduction to Public Health Practicum (1 credit) Preparatory work for practicum placement. Special projects arranged by an individual student and faculty member in areas supporting practicum placement. HM 892: Public Health Practicum (varies in credits) Professional internship experience which represents an opportunity for students to fully appreciate and integrate material learned in the classroom in a real world setting, and to gain applied experience in the field of public health. Enrollment in HM 892 requires completion of the 6 core courses. 6 06/19/12
7 HM 893: Public Health Capstone (2 credits) This final major paper shall provide evidence of the student s ability to synthesize and integrate knowledge acquired during the entire degree program and the applied experience. 7 06/19/12
