1 Learn New Words at Your Seat For further information contact Gloria Neel North Wauchula Elementary 1120 North Florida Avenue Wauchula, FL (863) n PROGRAM OVERVIEW Learn New Words at Your Seat is a center based program that was developed to have students become actively engaged while learning multiple strategies to use when learning new vocabulary. The games for this program can be created in a variety of ways: teacher created, student made, or purchased. Learn New Words at Your Seat can be used throughout the year in small group instruction as well as during center. Some of the centers the students enjoyed working on were: Synonym and Antonym Match Compound Word Puzzles Vocabulary Word Map Story Corner Swat the Word What s Missing Sort Words into Categories Synonym and Antonym Match is a student made center that is used at the conclusion of the synonym and antonym unit. Students work with a partner to match either synonyms or antonyms. Compound Word Puzzles is a teacher made center where students look at a picture of a compound word and the students find the two words that form this compound word. Students then write a sentence using the compound word. Vocabulary Web is a center where students choose from targeted vocabulary words. Each child writes a definition for the word, writes either a synonym or antonym for the word, uses the word in a sentence, and draws a picture that helps them remember the definition for the word. Story corner is a student created center where students listen to a story either on tape or orally reading the book with a partner. Then independently draw a picture of their favorite part of the story and write why they chose that part of the story as their favorite. Swat the Words center is a teacher lead center. The teacher chooses targeted vocabulary words to be used at this center. The teacher lays three words face up on the floor and gives the definition, synonym or antonym for the word. The student must then determine which word the teacher is describing. What s Missing center is a teacher lead center. The teacher chooses targeted vocabulary words to be used at this center. The teacher lays three words face up on the floor and states a sentence with a word missing. The student has to choose the word that belongs in the sentence and makes sense. Sort Words into Categories is a center that requires a student to identify the word and determine which category the word belongs in. This program was implemented in a first grade classroom of 18 students in which a large number of the students were ELL or students with disabilities. This program can easily be adapted to any grade level because the teacher creates the specific topics and skills that the students are needing help with. The exciting part of this program is that the level of each center can be quickly changed but still provide practice for the targeted vocabulary. Individual progress can be monitored by using the rubric attached. n OVERALL VALUE This program greatly motivated my students to try harder when learning new words and there meanings. Since this program was small group and center based the students were eager to try to use new words in their oral language and writings. They were eager for center and became more willing to try vocabulary games independently. n LESSON PLAN TITLES What s Missing Swat the Word Synonym / Antonym Match n MATERIALS Materials for each lesson are listed with each lesson plan. Overall materials budget including pricing and vendors follows the lesson plans. n ABOUT THE DEVELOPER Gloria Neel has a B.S. in Early Childhood and Elementary Education from Warner Southern college in Lake Wales, Florida. She has taught for 21 years at North Wauchula Elementary in Hardee County. She was taught both kindergarten and first grade. She is currently teaching first grade at North Wauchula Elementary. She is a member of the Curriculum Council, Grade Group Chair, and Directing Teacher for interns. She was also Teacher of the Year at her school in She is a multiple Adapter Grant recipient. This is her first Developer Grant. H H H
2 Lesson Plan No 1: What s Missing? n SUBJECTS COVERED Reading and Vocabulary n GRADES Kindergarten Five n OBJECTIVES The student will recognize the definition of a targeted vocabulary word. use context clues to determine the definition for the targeted vocabulary words. n SUNSHINE STATE STANDARDS LA The student will relate new vocabulary to prior knowledge LA The student will use meaning of individual words to predict the meaning of unknown words compound words LA The student will determine meaning of unfamiliar words by using a beginning dictionary, illustrations, and digital tools n MATERIALS Index cards Card stock Pocket Chart Scented Markers Containers to store index cards Ink for computer Treasure box with treasures n DIRECTIONS 1. Locate first grade Treasures reading book. 2. Write vocabulary words for each story on index cards or card stock. 3. Organize vocabulary words in container by story. 4. Model the procedure for playing the center. Put three vocabulary words in a pocket chart. The teacher orally states a sentence with a word missing. The teacher demonstrates how to try each word in the sentence to see if it makes sense. 5. Make sure all students understand the directions. 6. The teacher starts with the student to the right of them. 7. The teacher orally gives the student a sentence with a word missing. 8. The student tries all three words in the sentence to determine the correct word for the sentence. 9. If the student is correct they keep the card. 10. The teacher places three more words in the pocket chart 11. The teacher calls on the next student and continues until all words are used. 12. The student with the most words at the end of the game gets a treasure box treat. Hints: Laminate the vocabulary cards so that they are more durable. Make sure you organize your vocabulary words before you start the center. As you teach the words use a dictionary or digital tools to determine the meaning of the word. n EVALUATION/ ASSESSMENT See attached Rubric for Evaluation and Assessment Information. n ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Use a variety of word lists once the students are showing mastery of the words. Suggested word list are the Dolch Sight Words as well as the Fry Words. H H H
3 Lesson Plan No 2: Swat the Word n SUBJECTS COVERED Reading and Vocabulary n GRADES Kindergarten Five n OBJECTIVES The student will determine the meaning of a word when given context clues. n SUNSHINE STATE STANDARDS LA The student will use new vocabulary that is introduced and taught directly. LA The student will identify and sort common words into conceptual categories. LA The student will listen to, read, and discuss both familiar and conceptually challenging text. n MATERIALS Dolch Noun Vocabulary Cards Plastic Storage Container to store words Vocabulary Web Large Manila Folders to create centers Take It To Your Seat Vocabulary Grades 1 and 2 n DIRECTIONS 1. Locate Dolch noun list. 2. Write vocabulary words on index cards or card stock. 3. Organize vocabulary words in container by difficulty. 4. Sit on the floor in a semi circle with the students. 5. Model the procedure for playing the center. Put three vocabulary words in on the floor. The teacher orally gives a definition for the word. The student uses their hand to slap the correct word. 6. Make sure all students understand the directions. 7. The teacher starts with the student to the right of them. 8. The teacher orally states the definition for a word. 9. The student locates the word and slaps the word for the definition. 10. If the student is correct they keep the card. 11. The teacher places three more words on the pocket chart 12. The teacher calls on the next student and continues until all words are used. 13. The student with the most words at the end of the game gets a treasure box treat. n EVALUATION/ ASSESSMENT See attached Rubric for Evaluation and Assessment Information. n ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Extend the center by giving each child a vocabulary web to complete independently. This web challenges each child to write a definition for the word, write a synonym or antonym for the word, use the word in a sentence, and draw a picture on the side of the paper that helps them remember the definition for the word. 4 Learn New Words at Your Seat Gloria Neel Lesson Plan No 3: Synonym / Antonym Match n SUBJECTS COVERED n DIRECTIONS Reading and Vocabulary 1. n GR ADES Prior to beginning this center, you need to teach a unit on both synonyms and antonyms. 2. Begin the center by reviewing the difference between a synonym and an antonym. Kindergarten Five n OBJECTIVES The students will understand the difference between a synonym and antonym. The student will create a center for all classmates to use to practice synonyms and antonyms. n SUNSHINE STATE STANDARDS LA The student will identify common antonyms and synonyms. LA The student will categorize key vocabulary and identify salient features. 3. Teacher divides class into groups. Teacher creates a game focusing on synonyms for each group the first day. 4. On the second day each child tells you a synonym for the word that you give them. 5. On the third day give each child a colored index card and have each child make a line in the middle of the card. This line can be straight, zig-zag, or crooked. 6. On the fourth day have the students choose one of the envelopes that was created during center yesterday. Have that group of children match the synonyms. 7. On day five let class play synonym match games. Hints: Use these same directions to make antonym game. n EVALUATION/ ASSESSMENT See attached Rubric for Evaluation and Assessment Information. The child then writes a word on the left side of the card and then writes a synonym for the word they just wrote on the left side. Have the student cut the cards apart and put them into the clasp envelope.
