2(25) 1. SoD s Present Research Profile School of Design defined a research strategy in early 2001; before that, research was done on individual basis. Currently, the strategy focuses on two main research areas and several auxiliary areas that change quicker. 1. Main research areas User-Centered Design. In the 1990s in industrial design, there was a group of researchers who built on ergonomics, but focused on usability. With Turkka Keinonen and Simo Säde, industrial design built a small research basis, getting intellectual and project support mostly from technical universities. Keinonen s and Säde s work proved to be useful in education, but also attracted a new intellectually curious researchers, in whose hands usability transformed first into studies of user experience, and later into what we call user-centered industrial design. Currently, there are two lines in this research. First, there are studies on methods. For example, Tuuli Mattelmäki (DA in 2006) is world expert on (cultural) probes methodology, an influential, design-based methodology that is currently spreading into many other fields of research. Second there are theoretical studies, conducted under the supervision of prof. Ilpo Koskinen, by Esko Kurvinen, who became ethnomethodologist, and Katja Battarbee, whose notion of coexperience builds on another sociological tradition, symbolic interactionism. Design Studies and Practice-Based Research. The story of more culturally oriented research goes back to the 1990s. After prof. Pekka Korvenmaa left UIAH TaiK Research institute and joined industrial design in 2000, he provided guidance and protection for many pieces of research in what has come to be known as design studies. The most notable work was Anna Valtonen s history of industrial design. However, Korvenmaa s students have recently been working on design studies rather than history. Prof. Päikki Priha has supervised most histories in textile design. When DA Maarit Mäkelä joined the School for two years after defending her doctoral thesis in 2003, she started to map possibilities and modes for doing practice-led research in the interface of art driven design and academic discourse. The most notable piece of work is a book Mäkelä edited with Sara Routarinne from a colloquium in 2005, and the second conference in 2007, organized by Nithikul Nimkulrat. 2. Auxiliary research areas Applied Materials Research. Research in ceramics and to an extent, glass design began in the 1990s, but became unsystematic in the new millennia when the physicist Markku Rajala left the department to a start-up focusing on nanocoatings. When doctoral seminars for ceramics students restarted in 2002 after a

3(25) pause, new momentum built up in ceramics, leading to several doctoral theses and several articles, most notably by Raija Siikamäki who defended on recycling of CRT monitor glass. In textiles, a good example of materials research is Tiina Härkäsalmi s recent DA thesis. Strategic Design. While previous stories largely tell about internal development, the final story goes external. When the government set up design policy in , lots of money was poured money into design research. Not unsurprisingly, the structure of the policy built on earlier work in industrial design. A good deal of research funding was used for user-centered design, but other research areas were built up practically from scratch. Most notably, there were a few studies on what we called strategic design, which explored the way in which design is organized in formal organizations. Research at SoD responds to Taik strategy in all details. Even though SoD research is fairly new and practically all resources are used for doctoral education, its research is well-known internationally among design schools, which often benchmark its work. The most relevant competitors and reference groups vary: - User-centered design: Technische Universiteit Eindhoven/industrial design, Carnegie Mellon University/School of Design and HCI; University of Southern Denmark; in Asia, KAIST, human-centered interaction design lab - Design Studies and Practice-Based Research: several British Universities and design schools, including Royal College of Art, London; Chelsea School of Art and Design In auxiliary areas, it is more difficult to point out benchmarks, as research mostly stems from individual efforts. The most important sources of nourishment available to SoD are user-centered research and design studies. It is not difficult to get foreign visitors and doctoral students to these areas. 2. Scientific Quality of the Unit s Research in Research at SoD has focused on research education in belief that one has to train a generation of researchers before getting into a more serious research-based training mode in design occupations that are practice-based more than traditional sciences. However, design research in Taik can already be considered relatively advanced considering the practice grounded tradition of design and design

4(25) education. Figure 1 has a breakdown of research by main research areas explained above (note that terminology varies slightly). Figure 1: Refereed articles at SoD by research strategy, (Source: data collected for Academy of Finland evaluation in 2008; 2008 missing from these publications, 2007 underrepresented) What comes to senior researchers, between there have been only three professors who have been nominated on scientific grounds, and the number has not increased during the period. They have been active in many other fields than research including policy-making and department administration, which explains large variations in productivity. In particular, doctoral education eats resources; today the School produces annually about 3-4 doctoral degrees which, considering the number of senior research resources, can be considered high. During the evaluation period also a more organized doctoral education arrangement, Design Connections Doctoral School, started as collaboration with University of Lapland, Faculty of Art and Design. With its 14 doctoral students, five enjoying funding from the school, DCDS is a major design research education project on international scale. In addition, several professional and textbooks edited in international, crossdisciplinary and academy-business collaboration that are based on research have been published. Also, professors at SoD have run 21 research projects during , including 8 funded by the Academy of Finland. For SoD, excellence in research is a matter of international recognition measured by publications and reputation, and the number of incoming doctoral students. Currently research strives to achieve its aims and increase quality by Establishing its position as a normal part of the School s activities Creating a separate research budget (from 2008) to support long-term research planning Building an electronics laboratory to support user-centered research Increasing the number of post-doctoral researchers. In 2009, five post-docs are working at the School. This is exceptional in the history of TaiK.

5(25) Establishing a wide international network with doctoral students and faculty (from 2006, it has recruited several foreign-born doctoral students; four researchers and two professors have spent significant periods of time overseas, including Art Center in Pasadena; Illinois Institute of Technology, Palo Alto Research Center, National University of Singapore) No doubt, the main achievement of the School is that design research has become a normal and integral part of academic life in design, both in terms of doctoral education and in terms of its impact on the School s strategy and education. This is an exceptional achievement among art and design schools that in general value practice at the cost of disvaluing intellectual endeavors. In fact, a good deal of education at MA level in industrial design, where this trend is at its peak, is almost wholly dependent on research. In terms of individual pieces of research, SoD research on mobile multimedia has become an international benchmark in the social sciences and software engineering. 3. Scientific Impact of the Unit s Research in Doctors in universities. In 2008, three SoD doctorates from work at the School: Tuuli Mattelmäki, Maarit Mäkelä, and Sonja Iltanen. Kärt Summatavet became professor first at Estonian Academy of Art and then Tartu University. Fang Hai works in China as researcher and professor. Antti Alhava works as a professor of architecture in Helsinki University of technology. Most other doctors work either in industry or college-level schools, including Satu Miettinen. Of professors, Turkka Keinonen spent a year at National University of Singapore. Q. Are the professors and other senior researchers at the Unit active in international learned societies, editorial boards of international journals, tenure and doctoral committees etc.? A. Professor Keinonen is book reviewer for Springer, and reviews regularly for several conferences and journals. He has supervised 1 doctoral degree to finish, examined or pre-examined 4 doctoral theses, and evaluated one professorship. He has 8 patents between Professor Korvenmaa is in two editorial boards (Design Journal 1997-, Arkkitehti 2007-) and is associate editor in Journal of Design and Culture (2009-). Currently he evaluates the tenure of Clive Dilnot at Parsons the New School of Design in New York. He has supervised 5 doctoral degrees to finish, done 11 examinations or pre-examinations, out of which 2 abroad (Estonia, Austria). Prof. Koskinen is editor-in-chief of Knowledge, Technology and Policy (publisher Springer, formerly Transaction Publishers). He has evaluated two professorships, including one tenure evaluation for Carnegie Mellon University. Between , he has supervised 4 doctoral degrees to

6(25) finish, and either examined or pre-examined 13 doctoral theses, including 5 abroad (Denmark 2, Norway, Holland, Spain). He has reviewed book proposals for several publishing companies, and edited a series of design books for IT Press. Dr. Mattelmäki is program chair in Nordes 2009, and is currently reviewing a professorship for Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden. Prof. Priha is in one editorial board, has examined one doctoral thesis, is in the board of directors of one foundation, All these people have functioned as referees, workshop organizers, and program committee members in numerous conferences. They have chaired three conferences (data in Appendix 2). Q. Have the members of research active staff received notable international research awards or other research-related honors in recent years? A. Not that we know. Q. What are the most relevant research projects the Unit has been engaged in during the Assessment Period jointly with units from other universities? A. Projects. Professors at SoD have been scientific leaders in 21 projects in (out of which professor Keinonen 10). With the exception of one or two, these have been cooperative efforts with other, mostly Finnish universities. In terms of scientific production, the most important ones have been The Academy of Finland funded Muotoilija: synty kasvu ja kehitys by professor Korvenmaa (with the University of Helsinki); and Tekes funded Proomu and Luotain projects run by prof. Keinonen with the University of Helsinki and a host of companies. European Union. SoD has made a conscious decision not to get involved in EU funding, due to lack of senior research personnel combined with their heavy admin duties, and teaching load. Q. Has the Unit been the main organizer of major international conferences? A. Five in Helsinki, two abroad. Data is in Appendix 2. Q. Does the Unit host a national or international Center of Excellence? A. No. 4. Societal Impact of the Unit s Research in Research at the SoD impacts via published material and through its personnel and post-doctoral alumni. The active senior research staff serves as members in several conferences, working groups, and collaborative university-industry projects. Recent doctors impact industry and design education design; mostly, industrial designers belong to the former, culturally oriented designers to the latter group. Some are also engaged in university activities and link between the re-

7(25) search community and industry. Publications, such as dissertations almost all published by Taik, but have a wide international distribution. As Appendix 2 suggests, SoD s impacts on science can be measured at three levels: at national and international levels, but also in policy terms. Being the oldest and largest school of its kind in Finland, located in the capital, means that a good deal of professors activity goes to policy and the third task. The most important societal impact is no doubt the way in which professor participated in creating and running the Design 2005 program. Q. What are the main channels through which the Unit interacts (in both ways) with the society at large? A. Normal academic means: participating in the boards of foundations; boards of research and policy-making bodies; publications. Q. Doctors in industry A. These include Simo Säde (2001) CEO of Etnoteam; Katja Battarbee (2004), a design specialist in IDEO, Palo Alto; Raija Siikamäki (2005) research manager in Iittala, Helsinki; Esko Kurvinen (2007), research manager in Elisa; Anna Valtonen (2007) design manager in Nokia. Q. What are the most important research projects the Unit has carried out with non-university partners from the public or private sector during the Assessment Period? A. In the Design 2005 program, there was plenty of collaboration with companies. 1. Luotain, Design for user experience a method development project, which produced one doctoral dissertation and text book about probes that has received plenty of attention also internationally; textbooks in Finnish and internationally about concept design; textbook (international) about applying video in design; well over 20 conference papers and articles; collaboration with main export industries, Nokia and GE Healthcare mostly. 2. Proactive design with University of Helsinki, Unit for Activity Theory and Developmental Work Research. This project studied the impact and integration of industrial design in business-to-business metal industry. It involved collaboration with basic industries (Metso and Kone Corps.), and produced two textbooks in Finnish (pro oeconomia honorary mention) as well as several journal articles and conference papers. Q. Has the research of the Unit produced spin-off companies? A. No. Q. Have the members of the Unit been able to secure national or international patents?

8(25) A. Professor Keinonen has 8 patents. Q. Are the members of research active staff preferred experts also outside the academia? A. Due to staff shortage, professors participate little to activities outside the academia. They do policy work, though, esp. through Designium (prof. Nieminen); several foundations (profs. Korvenmaa, Priha); government (prof. Koskinen); and innovation funding organizations (prof. Keinonen). 5. Research Environment at the Unit of Assessment Infrastructure is not an issue. SoD has been able to secure all resources it needs for research either through its educational infrastructure, or through its network. The main problem lies with the faculty expertise profile. Out of about 30 teaching faculty, only 3 people have been recruited on scientific merit. The ratio has not change to more scientific direction during ten last years. The ratio of 15 doctoral students / faculty is not sustainable. Accordingly, the main structural obstacle in developing research is personnel. The lack of senior research personnel makes it difficult to achieve excellence. 6. Future Potential of the Units of Assessment SoD research strategy still works, and its history has proven that it is robust but flexible enough to accommodate new openings. However, it is currently being structured from four research areas into a hierarchy of two main areas and auxiliary areas (Section 1). 1. User-centered design research has been based on working on the interface of traditional industrial design, design of interactive technologies and social sciences. The traditions have their own backgrounds, methods and values, which means that the interface in between is a fruitful environment for transferring and reinterpreting approaches and theories. Many of the most interesting results of SoD s research have grown from these kind of crossover projects. The development of user centered design research requires updates in interactive prototyping competencies and facilities. The first steps have been taken, but continuing investment and competence development is needed. 2. Design studies continue on its traditional, humanistic basis with no specific research groups, but continuing in trusting on individual initiative and ambition. The research on the culture of design participates in a worldwide trend. The impact design has through the cultural industries is a rich field of future

9(25) research especially in the global realm. This field, known as World Design, ranges from crafts in developing countries to activities of global corporations. This research field will have a mainstay at SoD, providing policy tools and new economic opportunities. Significant development is taking place in artbased research (often though misleadingly called practice-based or practice-led research). Here, SoD is developing an active international research community with Chelsea School of Art and Design, London. Aalto University will open a plenty of new opportunities in design-engineering collaboration. However, the early plans of research platforms in Aalto University fail in concentrating the existing expertise in user centered design and technology development. This may lead to university internal fight for the resources, unless a solution for consolidating the research will be found. It is unclear what kinds of opportunities Aalto University will create for other research areas. Q. How is the Unit s recruitment strategy designed to strengthen the future potential of the Unit and its staff? A. In 2004, SoD has approved a recruiting strategy that is committed to increasing the number of professors recruited on scientific, not professional or artistic merits. However, the recruitment strategy has never been followed. The research competence within the faculty has not been improved. Personnel structure is the greatest obstacle for improving research. Q. What is the present age profile of the senior research staff? A. AVE=50,6 yrs, stdev=7,31. Q. What were the Unit s most important research recruitments in and how does the Unit plan to attract the best international talent to join the Unit in the future? A. During only temporary research positions with external funding have been fulfilled. Q. Is there notable emerging talent among the Unit s post-doctoral students (please give examples of exceptional publications, national and international prizes won etc)? A. With the exception of Dr. Mattelmäki, current post-doc researchers are yet untested what comes to independent research work. On the other hand, the best doctoral students are clearly very talented, and maybe about 30% of doctorates are capable of filling professor jobs. Ultimately, the responsibility for research lies in researchers.

10(25) 7. SWOT Internal origin External origin Helpful in achieving the objectives Strengths 1. Strong basis in UCD and design studied 2. Extensive and hi-quality international network and decent-to-high international reputation 3. Tradition in innovation in research (see Appendix 2): courage to explore new initiatives 4. Solid support from SoD and UIAH 5. Solid publishing record Opportunities 1. Aalto brings new opportunities in particular to UCD 2. Collaboration with architecture (now at TKK) may help finding new research areas in design studies 3. SoD is aging: when professorships open, they may be opened on scientific basis 4. A generation of skilled postdocs is gaining experience in industry 5. Design research is coming of age internationally...harmful in achieving the objective Weaknesses 1. Research personnel is too small, creating bottlenecks and exhaustion esp. among active teachers and researchers 2. Professors workload: on average, professors are able to devote less than 10% of their time to research 3. Constant university and admin reforms direct attention inwards 4. In an university dominated by design and art, research is still expendable and suffers from category errors: applied research and even consulting is constantly taken for research 5. Uneven workloads Threats 1. SoD still chooses to fill vacant positions on professional and artistic grounds, against its strategy 2. Extra teaching, admin and evaluation load from Aalto allocated to the most active researchers 3. Design has a small international research community, which makes the assessment of impact difficult to measure and small by definition 4. In UCD, outdated technological basis 5.
