Our clients tell us that working with one team in one place is of huge benefit to them. Icanho is a well-established specialist service and part of Livability, a national charity working with people with disabilities. This service is funded from a variety of sources including statutory and non-statutory, private and charitable, and treats both statutory and non-statutory clients. 3 What our clients say Your first visit Andrew (53) had a stroke, which resulted in left-sided weakness, slowed visual processing and mild perceptual difficulties. He also had mild difficulties with language and day-to-day function. Andrew was very keen to return to work which, after he was discharged from Icanho, he has done successfully. He told us: I had physiotherapy, occupational, speech and language therapy, psychology and large portions of TLC over a 12-month period. It s a fantastic building with outstanding, professional staff, who are organised, caring and determined to succeed as a team with their clients. Without doubt I can say that coming to Icanho will allow me to live my life again. We will write to you when we receive your referral. We will then be in touch by telephone to see if we are able to help you. We may then arrange for you to visit Icanho to meet our staff for further assessment. It would be helpful for you to bring a companion for the assessment, especially if your speech is impaired or you have difficulties in understanding. We understand that your brain injury affects the whole family so you may like your family to be involved in your rehabilitation. It helps if we can gain as much information as possible about your current situation. However, in certain cases, transport can be arranged. 5

4 What happens next What our clients say Following your assessment, we will meet with you to discuss the next step. If Icanho is the right service for you, we will plan your rehabilitation programme with you. Your programme may include sessions in or outside the centre, including your home or place of work. If you live in north Suffolk, we may offer you some of your treatment at our satellite service in the Waveney Valley area. The team at Icanho will work with you to help you achieve as much progress as possible. Rehabilitation is a two-way process. With your permission, we will keep your GP informed about your progress. Becky (32) was in a traffic accident, resulting in multiple fractures and a traumatic brain injury. Icanho has been working with her to improve her physical, functional and cognitive abilities, and re-establishing her roles within the family, including caring for her young daughter. She told us: I came to Icanho because I had brain damage after being knocked down by a bus. I needed help with ideas for looking after my daughter. First of all I thought I didn t need help - until I tried to do things. It has made a difference, otherwise I would have sat at home shouting and upsetting my family members. Coming to Icanho, I am now able to look after my daughter better, with all the help from Icanho. 6 Icanho: the origin of our name East Anglian monk St Botolph built the Icanho monastery in the seventh century, probably at the site of modern Iken in Suffolk. Botolph was famed for pastoral care, wisdom and holiness. He is buried in the Abbey of Bury St Edmunds. Sam is using a SaeboFlex splint to improve manual dexterity 7

5 Meet the team Your physiotherapist will work with you to help you manage and improve any problems that affect your movement, posture or fitness. The aim is to help you make the most of your physical ability. Your speech and language therapist will work with you if your ability to communicate has been impaired. Communication includes talking, listening, reading, writing and many other abilities. Your occupational therapist will work with you in order that you may learn to overcome or compensate for your difficulties with physical function and thinking. This means you can achieve your maximum level of independence in everyday activities at home, at work and in the community. Your social worker will give you and your family information and support to help you adjust to your changed situation. Practical advice is given where necessary, including help with claiming welfare benefits to maximise income. Your rehabilitation assistant will work with you and your therapists on your rehabilitation programme. Your neuropsychologist will assess if there are changes in your problem-solving, memory, concentration and attention. Help may be provided in coping with anxiety, depression and other emotional concerns. Our doctor will look at current issues relating to your brain injury, will consult with other members of the team and will liaise with your GP and hospital doctors as required. 8 9

6 Practical matters Visiting Icanho Icanho is open from 8.30am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. At other times, please leave a message and we will return your call as soon as possible. A map can be found at or contact us to request directions. Free parking is available at Icanho. Icanho is a non-smoking site. Icanho does not provide meals but has facilities for you to make yourself a drink. Staff will help you if you need it. A nominal contribution for refreshments is suggested. There is also a small tuck shop at reception. We have a waiting area for you and your family to relax between appointments. Cancelling an appointment Please let us know as soon as possible if you need to cancel an appointment: phone us on This is especially important if you have transport booked. Please remember: we try to offer cancellations to other clients who are waiting we will still be required to pay for your transport even if you are unable to attend Data protection During your first visit, you will be asked to sign a consent form to comply with the Data Protection Act. This is because: we need your permission to keep relevant personal and medical details about you we need to share this information with other relevant staff and organisations who may be involved in your care we need to use some of this information to produce standard statistics about our service Comments We welcome comments about our service from our clients and their families and friends. Please use the suggestion box in the waiting room or speak to a member of staff. Concerns or complaints The manager is usually available to discuss any concerns you may have or will make an appointment to meet with you as soon as possible.
