1 A CHAPTER OF NFSA July 2012 NICET Alternative Accepted after July 11, 2012 Lorrell Bush Executive Director Florida Fire Sprinkler Association A Chapter of NFSA National Fire Sprinkler Association 2025 Droylsden Lane Eustis, FL Phone: (352) Cell: (954) bush@nfsa.org It has been signed and posted and pending no objection as of July 11, 2012 the Florida State Fire Marshal will accept NICET alternative as approved by the State Fire Marshal s office. The Academy of Fire Sprinkler Technology has a program in place that has been approved by the SFM and ready to go. We will be offering the last week of August in Boca Raton, FL three day training program with the Academy exam being offered on day four. So bearing no objections watch our website after July 11 to be the first to take advantage of this opportunity. If you have any employees who are not yet certified or have obtained a NICET level I they can take advantage of this class with test on day four. We are very excited that we now can offer our contractors in the state of Florida an alternative to the NICET program for their inspectors. If you have any questions about this please feel free to contact me at anytime. If you would like to read about the NICET equivalent see chapter par. 11 below. (11) It is intended that a certificateholder, or a permitholder who is employed by a certificateholder, conduct inspections required by this chapter. It is understood that after July 1, 2008, employee turnover may result in a depletion of personnel who are certified under the NICET Sub-field of Inspection and Testing of Fire Protection Systems Level II or equivalent training and education as required by the Division of State Fire Marshal. A certificateholder may obtain a provisional permit with an endorsement for inspection, testing, and maintenance of water-based fire extinguishing systems for an employee if the employee has initiated procedures for obtaining Level II certification from the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies Sub-field of Inspection and Testing of Fire Protection Systems and achieved Level I certification or an equivalent level as determined by the State Fire Marshal through verification of experience, training, and examination. The State Fire Marshal may establish rules to administer this subsection. After 2 years of provisional certification, the employee must have achieved NICET Level II certification or obtain equivalent training and education as determined by the division, or cease performing inspections requiring Level II certification. The provisional permit is valid only for the 2 calendar years after the date of issuance, may not be extended, and is not renewable. After the initial 2-year provisional permit expires, the certificateholder must wait 2 additional years before a new provisional permit may be issued. The intent is to prohibit the certificateholder from using employees who never reach NICET Level II status, or equivalent training and education as determined by the division, by continuously obtaining provisional permits. Centering on documentation and processing, this seminar will provide the attendee with guidance on developing and continuing a relevant enforcement program. Topics covered will be: Identifying the appropriate sections of NFPA 25 that apply to administrative and enforcement requirements, Key Definitions, The role and responsibilities of building owners or their designated representatives, The difference between internal inspections and obstruction investigations and identify the need for each, Impairment Procedures for systems, and see what sprinkler system deficiencies look like and understand why they need to be corrected. You can register online at July 11 th, 2012 West Palm Beach Palm Beach County Fire Rescue Herman W. Brice Complex 405 Pike Rd. Rooms 101 & 102 West Palm Beach, FL Introducing the 2013 NFSA Annual Seminar and North American Fire Sprinkler Expo The National Fire Sprinkler Association (NFSA) is pleased to announce that in conjunction with its Annual Seminar being held April 4 6, 2013 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, it is partnering with the Canadian Automatic Sprinkler Association (CASA) and the newly formed Mexican Fire Sprinkler Association (AMRACI) to host the first ever North American Fire Sprinkler Expo. Check out NFSA website for more details Lunch included Thank you to our Sponsor: July 13 th, 2012 Altamonte Springs, FL Hilton Hotel Altamonte Springs FL 350 Northlake Blvd. Altamonte Springs, FL PARTICIPANT SHOULD BE PREPARED WITH A CURRENT COPY OF NFPA 25 Sprinkler Save at Walt Disney World On January 12 the Reedy Creek Fire Department responded to a call at Walt Disney World s Magic Kingdom. According to fire department spokesman Bo Jones, one of the park s Adventureland attractions, The Enchanted Tiki Room Under New Management, caught fire at approximately 5:30 p.m. Fire sprinklers quickly extinguished the small fire, located in the attic of the attraction. Firefighters evacuated the surrounding area, confirmed the fire was out, and reopened the section of the park; however, at 8 p.m. the Enchanted Tiki Room was still closed to park guests as crews worked to clear excess sprinkler water. Crews continue to determine the extent of the damage, but Jones concludes that the sprinklers kept the fire from spreading to other structures. Referring to the fire sprinklers, Jones said, They did their job today. Fortunately, firefighters did not report any injuries as a result of the fire
4 NFSA ONLINE Interactive Seminars Technical Tuesday s Seminars start at 10:30 a.m. Eastern Time Price for NFSA Members - $125 per session - Price for Non-Members - $250 per session July 10, 2012 Is that really an obstruction? Intermediate James D. Lake The rules governing clearance between sprinklers and partitions, library stacks and structural components are intended to provide sufficient distance for the sprinkler spray pattern to develop and deliver water over the floor area it covers. These rules vary by sprinkler type and the kind of obstruction. This seminar will explore the rules governing clearance to sprinklers and demonstrate the impact of the rules on actual sprinkler spray patterns. July 24, 2012 Protection of Vertical Spaces Basic/Intermediate - Karl Wiegand, E.I.T. Many buildings have features that take up little floor area but would have significant impact on a fire due to their vertical alignment. Examples of these spaces are vertical shafts, stairways, and elevator hoistways. This seminar will discuss how those types of areas need to be protected, including where sprinklers are permitted to be omitted. In addition, how to handle vertical openings in a structure will be examined. August 7, 2012 Protecting Multiple Buildings Basic Kenneth E. Isman, P.E. This seminar will focus on answering two questions that are frequently asked through our "Expert of the Day" program. The first question is, "Can you protect multiple buildings with a single water supply (including a single tank and pump)?" The second question is, "Can you protect multiple buildings with a single sprinkler system?" The answers to both of the questions will depend on a number of variables, which will be explored in depth during the program.
