5 IFE CIENCE OUTION - Pharma A High-Containment Isolation ystem for icronizing et illing A major pharmaceutical micronizing company needed a mobile, high-containment isolation system suitable for housing -, -, -, or 5-in. micronizing jet-mill systems during the loading, milling, and offloading processes. The company consulted Telstar's technology center in ewsbury, United Kingdom, for help with this large project, which involved several engineering challenges. illing and micronization operations sometimes involve the size reduction of highly potent active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). The company's system therefore needed to reduce the operator exposure level to less than µg/m throughout the operation, and above background levels, with defined sequences of operations (OPs). uch containment systems must allow the operator to conduct normal operations successfully using gloves. Operators also must be able to clean the isolator and milling equipment in an enclosed environment while wearing gloves. Ergonomic trials play a major role in ensuring that the final design is the best possible solution for operation and provides a high level of containment. The company's micronizing mills varied greatly with regard to size, weight, air consumption, and product usage. The -in. mill weighed approximately 0 kg and consumed air at a rate of about 5 m/h at 0 psi. The 5-in. mill weighed more than 50 kg, and its air consumption was roughly 60 m/h at 0 psi. In addition, the equipment associated with each mill (e.g., mill support, product feeder, product-feed hopper, airsupply pipes, controls, and outfeed product bag) had to be housed and contained. Telstar and the company discussed various proposals regarding the containment system's design and operation, and the final plan was to create a three-chamber mobile isolator with a main chamber that could house any of the mills and associated equipment. The -in. mill could operate independently in this isolator. The -, -, and 5-in. mills, however, required a large, fixed, three-chamber cyclone isolator connected to the mobile isolator to handle the large airflows and product discharges. The three-chamber mobile micronizing isolator incorporated a transfer chamber, a micronizing chamber, and a discharge chamber. It was designed to provide a high containment barrier for each size of micronizing mill when personnel loaded, micronized or milled, and offloaded APIs. The isolator limited operator and environmental exposure to the API to less than µg/m throughout the operation, and above background levels, when defined OPs were followed. Controls allowed personnel to monitor and adjust the environmental conditions inside the isolator through the various modes of operation. A drum-docking system was fitted to the transfer chamber and sealed with an inflatable seal to enable personnel to load raw-material drums. A small weigh scale was included within the main chamber for measuring samples, and a safe-change pass-out port also was added so that samples could be passed out safely. A larger weigh scale was fitted in the discharge chamber for weighing the milled product, and a safe-change connection port also was added to enable a safe-change pipe to be connected between the mobile isolator and the cyclone isolator when necessary. Wash guns and spray balls were provided to enable safe cleaning of the isolator after use. The three-chamber fixed-cyclone isolator consisted of a filter sock cyclone hopper chamber, a middle rotavalve chamber, and a lower discharge chamber. The fixed-cyclone isolator was designed to provide a highcontainment barrier when connected to the mobile micronizing isolator during the offloading of APIs. Operator and environmental exposure was limited to less than µg/m throughout the operation, and above background levels, when defined OPs were followed. Isolator controls let personnel monitor and control the environmental conditions inside the isolator. A rotary valve was fitted between the cyclone and discharge sections to enable exact amounts of product to be discharged without intervention. A safe-change connection port also was added to the cyclone chamber to enable a safe-change pipe to be connected between the mobile isolator and the cyclone isolator when necessary. afe-change pass-out ports also were added to the sock chamber and middle chamber so that samples and waste bags could be passed out safely. A large weigh scale was fitted in the discharge chamber for weighing the milled product, and wash guns and spray balls were provided to ensure safe cleaning of the isolator after use. To enable access to all parts of the -ft tall cyclone isolator, various access platforms and stairs were integrated into the construction. A drum lifter tipper was provided to assist the loading of large drums of product into the isolator. The drum lifter tipper lifts the drums and docks them onto the transfer chamber of the mobile isolator through an inflatable seal to prevent operator exposure. Personnel can remove the drum lid from inside the chamber and transfer product safely into the isolator. ome of the mills weighed more than 50 kg and were difficult to lift into the isolator. To overcome this challenge, the drum lifter was given a flat lift bed that enabled the mill to be loaded safely from the floor to the correct height. The company was extremely satisfied with the results of this large, bespoke, and challenging high-containment project and even described it as being 'ground breaking'. The team proclaimed the project a huge success.

6 IFE CIENCE OUTION - Pharma Telstar launches a new system for loading and unloading lyophilised vials specially designed to operate under aseptic contiditions Telstar has developed a new generation of lyophilisers with an integrated compact automatic vial loading and unloading system which operates under aseptic conditions. The patented technology incorporates mechanisms driven by a set of three flexible curved steel bands which make it very compact yet easy to clean and the entire system is situated outside the lyophiliser when not in active use. The lateral curvature of the bands gives them high stiffness, reducing requirements for guidance when in use and making system elements accessible for cleaning, while still enabling them to be very thin to reduce storage space when not in use. Aimed specifically at applications for the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry, this system has been designed to operate effectively both in aseptic conditions for product protection and under contained conditions for operator protection. The system can unload lyophilisers configured in 'pass-through' mode and can also be used to load and unload single-sided lyophilisers when layout conditions restrict application of other technologies. Pass-through configuration makes it possible to combine, in the same lyophiliser, loading and unloading in areas with different aseptic classifications and different degrees of operator protection. The system is appropriate, for example, for handling low-toxicity liquid products which, when lyophilised, become highly toxic by inhalation, requiring a higher level of operator protection during the unloading process than when loading. The system dimensions (less than 600mm/ in depth) readily enable integration into an isolator and all working areas can be accessed easily and safely using gloves for operations such as changes of format, sampling or management monitoring systems. Telstar is implementing this innovative vial loading and unloading system for the Russian company R-Pharm which is establishing a facility for the production of cytotoxic lyophilised products under aseptic conditions. Telstar develops integrated solutions for fully contained electrical equipment using F6 gas dielectric Telstar has developed an integrated process system for the manufacture of electrical equipment containing F6 gas dielectric for secondary electricity distribution networks. The Telstar solution, which includes the development and control of the complete equipment design and manufacturing process through the application of proprietary evacuation, filling, distribution and recovery and leak testing technology, guarantees maximum safety and ensures that the client company complies with environmental regulations for the electricity industry. Telstar is involved at every stage of the design and manufacturing process for equipment which handles F6, from the evacuation, control and distribution stages to monitoring leak tightness and gas recovery in the event of faulty equipment. The physical-chemical characteristics of F6 make it ideal as a dielectric medium for equipment that operates at a medium or high voltage. The Telstar solution checks the leaktightness of the tanks that are to house the gas and to assure that they are filled with sufficient precision. These solutions also cover all operations relating to gas handling, transfer and recovery in order to minimise losses. All F6 circulation and storage is monitored by a central system which detects any anomalies that may arise. F6 detectors are located at key points to raise the alarm if any gas is present. Of the gases used to inhibit electric arcing and as insulators in electricity distribution equipment, F6 is the most common in Europe and Asia, enabling highly compact equipment to be developed to optimise space. Telstar's ability to develop integrated process solutions for the manufacture of electrical equipment containing F6 is the result of almost 50 years' experience and research into the application of vacuum technologies in the industrial sector. Through this solution, Telstar has become the first company to take on the design, manufacture and control of the entire equipment process for this sector. Environmental compliance The development of integrated solutions for electrical equipment containing F6 has enabled Telstar to provide a secure solution that assures the leaktightness and monitored control of the equipment, in accordance with the commitment signed by the panish companies in the electricity industry in arch 00, through the ERCOBE manufacturers' association. This refers to the reduction of F6 emissions by the use of technologies and the adoption of appropriate processes and equipment, through the voluntary agreement between the inistry of the Environment and manufacturers and suppliers of electrical equipment that use F6, represented by ERCOBE, and electricity transportation and distribution companies, represented by UNEA and REE, to limit sulphur hexafluoride emissions. The long atmospheric life of such gases requires strict leaktightness specifications for equipment. 7 TETAR IFE CIENCE IFE CIENCE AUE ERICE AUE ERICE Telstar group is working with INRA to supply the first NBC modular laboratories for the Turkish ministry of defence Telstar has been working with Indra istemas to develop a mobile containment laboratory which will detect high-hazard (NRBC) contaminants The Telstar Group has been working with Indra istemas to develop a deployable mobile laboratory equipped to carry out the confirmed analytical identification of Nuclear, Radiological, Biological and Chemical (NRBC) threats for the Turkish inistry of efence. This is a containment laboratory which will detect the presence of high-hazard NRBC contaminant agents. The mobile laboratory is integrated in a module which facilitates easy transfer to the operations zone. The solution provides operatives with a clean working space which does not endanger their health, where the samples collected can be studied and the results transmitted once they have been obtained. The module is designed in a 0' configuration, and has been standardised to make it easy to transport to the required zone by helicopter or inside military transport aircraft. This laboratory has been developed by Indra istemas with the Telstar Group's involvement in the phase of design, integration and tests on the work carried out by Telstar, which makes up this type of facility. This project, commissioned by INRA, implies recognition of Telstar's technological capacity and its knowledge of engineering in the design and development of critical and non-critical integrated facilities in the containment and life sciences field.
