7 THE ENGLISH REGISTER USED BY INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY TECHNICIANS AT HI - TECH MALL SURABAYA. ABSTRACT People as a social creature cannot avoid interacting with other people in the world. It means that they must communicate with their society. Language is a meansof communication, including sentences that are appropriate in various situations. Sociolinguistics is a part of the language which learns about society. This means that we have capacity to produce the languages that signify certain meaning to understand or to interpret the languages produced by certain community. Register is one of the language varieties that is used based on the use or the subject matter. The English register used by Information Technology Technicians is much and not all people know it well. Technician is a worker in a field of technology who is proficiently (professionally) to relevant with skills and techniques,a relatively practical understanding of the theoretical principles. The technicians usually have register to communicate each others. The register is used when the technicians are working together in the workplace. This study was conducted to know the English registers used by information technology technicians at Hi-Tech Mall Surabaya. The research design of this study was descriptive qualitative research. This research using research subject. Because of limited time, the researcher took observation from four stores, such as Perdana Computer, Gito Computer, Tan Computer and Istana Computer. And the researcher did the interview to ten technicians who had different experiences. Finally, the questionnaires distributed to seventy five technicians. The research finding of the research was the English registers used by information technology technicians at Hi-Tech Mall was 52 words. The different names of English register showed that there were 30 Technicians who had more than one year experience used standard English registers when they working. 20 dan 15 technicians who had more than 5 years and 10 years experience had different names of English register arround 3.The last, 10 technicians who had more than 15 years experience had different names arround 5.
