2 CHAIN REACTION Building Teesside s renewable energy supply chain cluster The UK Government has announced a 75bn programme to develop nine offshore wind farm zones in the North Sea. The largest of these, Dogger Bank, is located off the North East coastline. The expectation is that a considerable proportion of the manufacturing for this 9,000-mega watt zone will take place in North East England. This will create substantial business opportunities for companies at all tiers of the supply chain. Located midway between the two main industrial rivers of the Tyne and the Tees, the facility is developing a supply chain cluster which, as it grows, is well placed to secure contracts for the new wind farm zones. It already boasts leading offshore wind turbine cable manufacturer JDR Cables and offshore substation supplier Heerema, on the 50-hectare site. With an existing and rapidly expanding renewables sector, the North East is well placed to become a leader in renewable energies and needs to be fit and ready to attract investment. PD Ports facility in Hartlepool is linking in to the Government s future offshore wind farm agenda and will capitalise on the associated new engineering jobs and economic benefits over the next 5 to 10 years. 2

3 THE FACILITIES HARTLEPOOL DOCK Hartlepool is situated 6.4km north of the River Tees and provides lock free access to its facilities in Victoria Harbour. Hartlepool has versatile facilities, competitive rates and extensive hinterland adjacent to port operations for development opportunities. There are three main quays at the port ranging in length from 150m to 380m. Maximum dimensions accepted in the basin are 152m x 21m beam. The basin has 3 Roll on/roll off (Ro-Ro) ramps which can be used for landing or discharging of cargos. One of these Ro-Ro ramps can handle cargo of 500 tonnes. The basin is ideal for heavy Ro-Ro fabrications built for the offshore industry or any vessel requiring a constant level of water. All the quays can be accessed by mobile cranes. Detailed plans are available on request. 3

5 LABOUR AND ACCOMMODATION As other ports experience ever greater demands for labour, they are forced to increase their catchment areas. Length of journey to work has increased to 30+ miles in more congestedareas. As demand increases this situation will worsen. Hartlepool and Teesport enjoy a robust supply of labour within a 15 mile radius of the port and can support all the labour/workforce needed for all types of related work. The area can also provide lodgings for your workforce with a good supply of national hotel chains to bed & breakfast accommodation within short distances of port facilities. 5

6 TRANSPORT LINKS Good transport links are vital and port operations are within a short distance from dual carriageways and main arterial routes to and from the region. THESE INCLUDE: The South via A1(M) or A19 The North via A1(M) or A66/M6 The West via A66/M6/M5 Both Durham Tees Valley Airport and Newcastle International Airport are located within a short journey and provide a range of national and international services. In addition to the excellent road and airport links the area also has an excellent train service connecting the North and South at Darlington, with local stations also serviced. 6

7 CONSORTIUM PD Ports, together with other companies involved in the offshore wind farm sector in the north-east, has launched Chain Reaction - Teesside s renewable energy supply chain cluster. The aim of the cluster is to attract further business to the offshore wind energy industry to the north-east of England with the vision to build a centre of excellence in Teesside that will be recognised both nationwide and worldwide.
