4 1 Introduction Microsoft Windows MultiPoint Server 2012 is a low-cost computing solution that creates a one to one user to desktop experience for multiple users on the same PC. With MultiPoint Server, one PC can provide multiple computing sessions at a fraction of the cost. It provides a way to reduce hardware and energy costs while providing a simple-to-use, centrally managed infrastructure that allows computing resources to be shared in a small business or even for a classroom. This document provides reference architecture for MultiPoint Server solution using Dell Wyse zero clients. 2 Component Overview This section provides a high-level product overview of the major components of the solution. Readers can skip the sections of products with which they are familiar. 2.1 Windows MultiPoint Server Microsoft Windows MultiPoint Server (WMS) 2012 is based on Microsoft Windows Server 2012, but unlike the standard server solution, it uses a single system to host multiple, simultaneous and independent user stations (zero clients) that are attached either by using USB or network cables. WMS provides a simplified IT solution for school classrooms and other businesses. It is possible to use regular PCs with this solution, but some of the key benefits, such as centralized management and energy savings, are not realized in that scenario. The clients in a WMS solution consist of a: USB hub or Network Switch User station (zero client) Display (VGA monitor) Keyboard Mouse A standard USB hub adds more USB ports and extends the distance between the zero clients and the host system and delivers connectivity to the zero clients. The end user display, keyboard, mouse microphone and speakers are connected to the zero clients. A network switch can also be used in the place of USB hub to connect the zero clients, for scenarios that require extended distances between the end-user and host system. Windows MultiPoint Server different than a traditional server in the following ways: 1. All processing is done on the host system. 2. Clients are simply terminals, with some extra capabilities, such as USB storage and audio. 3. Management is centralized onto the server, with an easy-to-use MultiPoint Manager console to manage the users and user stations, including specialized functions that are very useful for a classroom environment. Windows MultiPoint Server 2012 has two editions: Standard and Premium. These editions support a different number of end clients. 5 the WMS server in larger and more complex, networked environments. Microsoft WMS 2012 Premium also has Hyper V support, but this configuration is outside the scope of this deployment guide. Windows MultiPoint Server 2012 Standard - Supports a maximum of 11(10 users + 1 admin) simultaneously connected stations with no domain join supported. Windows MultiPoint Server 2012 Premium - Supports a maximum of 21(20 users + 1 admin) simultaneously connected stations with domain join supported. The limits mentioned above for Windows Multipoint Server 2012 Standard and Premium also depend on the Server hardware selected. 2.2 Host Systems Dell Optiplex 9020 or Dell Wyse 7400-Z00Q can be used to host the Multipoint Server Dell Optiplex 9020 Dell Optiplex 9020 is the latest business class workstation that supports 4 th generation Intel Core i5 and i7 processors and up to 8 GB of memory. It is available in three form factors: Ultra small, small and mini tower form factor. It has integrated Intel graphics and also supports AMD Radeon for configurations that require advanced graphics. For more information, see Figure 1. Dell Optiplex Dell Wyse 7400-Z00Q The Dell Wyse Z00Q is a high-performance thin client for virtual desktop environments. Featuring a quad-core AMD processor, the Z00Q offers a vibrant Windows experience and achieves exceptional speed and power for demanding Windows applications. With Microsoft Multipoint Server 2012 license, the 7400-Z00Q can enable a USB connected multifunction station with up to 9 x 1000-E00 endpoints. 6 The 7400-Z00Q has Gigabit Ethernet and 6 total USB ports (Four USB 2.0 ports and two USB 3.0 ports). Figure 2. Dell Wyse 7400-Z00Q 2.3 Dell Wyse Zero Clients Dell Wyse zero clients are purpose-built to provide instant-on, hands-off operation, and performance that meets the demands of your most power-hungry applications. The E-class zero clients are specifically building for Microsoft VDI infrastructure such as Windows Multipoint Server Dell Wyse 1000-E00 The Dell Wyse 1000-E00 zero clients for Microsoft Windows MultiPoint Server gives teachers and administrators the flexibility, ease of use and full-featured computing power they need to keep students engaged and productive. Designed specifically to work with Windows MultiPoint Server, this low-cost alternative to PC sharing lets you connect quickly and easily with just a USB cable. Additionally, the 1000-E00 is USB powered, so no external power adaptor needed. Dell Wyse E Dell Wyse 1002-E02 The Dell Wyse 1002-E02 zero clients are designed to work with Microsoft Windows MultiPoint Server, offering a truly low-cost alternative to PC sharing technology through an innovative hardware design. Teachers can simply connect the 1002-E02 to a PC running Windows MultiPoint Server via Ethernet cables, and the system is up and running in minutes. Like the Dell Wyse 1000-E00 zero client, the 1002-E02 supports USB peripherals such as a keyboard, a mouse, web cams and USB flash drives in conjunction with Windows MultiPoint Server to provide a full rich Windows desktop to students, and maximum flexibility to teachers and administrators. 8 2.4 Peripherals In addition to the key components illustrated above for deploying a WMS 2012 solution, other peripherals such as the following are also required. USB Hub: The USB hub provides connectivity for the E-class device, as well as connectivity for the keyboard and mouse for the admin console. Monitors: Depending upon the capabilities of the graphic card or USB hub, both digital (need DVI-to- VGA converter) and analog (VGA) monitors can be used as display for the station. The selection of screen resolution depends on the station capabilities (see Wyse 1000-E00 and 1002-E02 video capabilities), the number of stations, and the types of applications on the stations. For the Wyse 1000-E00 and 1002-E02 devices: Resolutions up to 1680x1050 at 32 bit color or 1600x1200 at 32 bit color. If server resolution does not support high resolutions, the device will default to 1024 X 768. Keyboard and Mouse: Keyboard and mouse for the end-user must be directly connected to the E-class device. 3 Configuration The following table provides detailed configurations and specifications of the Dell recommended solution for three types of workloads. The workloads are: Task Worker: Task Workers includes running one to two applications simultaneously. Example applications include: Web browser, Word processing applications and client. Knowledge Worker: Knowledge Workers includes running four to five applications simultaneously. Example applications include: Office or similar applications, client and PDF applications along with up to 480p video. Power User: Power users and includes running several applications. 10 Table 1. Windows MultiPoint Server Configurations 4 MultiPoint Server Station Deployment Options In the MultiPoint Server, there are two major types of connections that are supported. For complete list of supported connections from Microsoft, please refer to WMS 2012 planning guide. 1. USB Connected Multifunction Stations, such as the Dell Wyse 1000-E00 2. LAN Connected Stations (this includes zero-client stations like the Dell Wyse 1002-E02) The Microsoft Windows MultiPoint Planning and Deployment Guides provide excellent material covering most of the current deployment methods. 4.1 USB Connected Multifunction Stations For Basic and Standard Configuration This was one of the original deployment options in WMS, and has been improved in WMS largely due to the growth of vendors producing zero-client devices. There are many more vendor options to choose from and since these devices have been on the market for a while, some of the initial bugs have been worked out of the technology. Wyse E Z00Q Figure 5. Dell Wyse 1000-E00 Stations in a 4-Station Configuration 4.2 LAN Connected Stations For Standard and Premium Configuration Below is an illustration of Dell Wyse 1002-E02 stations in a 10-station configuration. It is recommended for applications that require audio and video processing. The other advantage of a networked configuration is you avoid the cable-length limits seen with USB. Dell Wyse 1002-E02 Stations in a 10-Station Configuration 5 Windows MultiPoint Server 2012 Deployment Overview The following provides a high level overview of the steps involving deploying MultiPoint Server. 1. Install WMS 2012 from Microsoft download center on to the host system 2. Login as administrator. 3. At this point, the host system will not have network connectivity. Install the network driver. The network driver can be found in support.dell.com. The service tag of the host system can be used and the operating system should be selected as Windows Once you have network connectivity, install the graphics driver and audio driver and reboot the server. 5. Using Windows Update Manager, download and install latest Windows updates to the system. (Highly recommend) 6. Install Windows UR1-From Windows update. Windows Update Manager should automatically install all the latest patches, including this one. (Highly recommend) 7. 12 8. Install latest E-class device driver from Dell Wyse download center Reboot WMS server. 10. Login as administrator on WMS 2012, launch Multipoint Manager and add Client Access License (CAL) key for E-class device in the Add Client Access Licenses window. 11. Using Multipoint Manager create user account. 12. Connect E-class device via USB ports or via Ethernet (depending on the type of client device) on the same network of WMS server. 13. For 1000-E00 USB device, user can login with valid credentials. 14. For 1002-E02 device: a. On WMS server Multipoint Manager window, click on Network Station tab, select discovered 1002-E02 device, and select Assign to this server option. b.
