2 Physical Therapy Department Mission Statement: The mission of the Department of Physical Therapy is multifaceted, supporting the overall mission and vision of UIC, an urban, comprehensive, public research university. The Department, like the University, strives to pursue excellence in education, research, and service.

3 DPT Program at UIC Our DPT program was ranked in the top 8% or 16 th of 211 accredited DPT/MPT programs across the country by US News & World Report (2012) Our program is in the top 3 of all programs that are housed in urban and public universities.

7 Instructional Philosophy Students are active participants in the educational process Instructional materials presented are evidence-based and reflect current and future practice trends Instruction begins with development of foundational knowledge with progression to application of foundational sciences to patient care

9 Affiliation with University of Illinois Hospital and Health Sciences System (UIHHSS) Students participate in patient care educational experiences including: Orthopedic experiential learning Excellence in Teaching Observation of treatment of patients in the ICU Neurologic patient care at the UIMC rehab unit UIHHSS therapists often serve as lab/guest instructors Students able to learn from clinicians primarily involved in direct patient care Students learn from consistent instructors throughout the program Additional lab/guest instructors from affiliated Chicago area hospitals including Alexian Brothers Medical Center, Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, Rush University Medical Center, & University of Chicago

26 UIC DPT Clinical Education Ensure every student has exposure to a wide variety of patients/clients & settings Includes 38 weeks of full-time clinical experiences One 2 week & three 12 week internships A minimum of 8 weeks in acute, ambulatory/op, & rehabilitation settings 10 documented cases in each of four practice patterns (MS, NM, CP, Integumentary) 5-10 documented cases in 3 different lifespan categories (0-6, 7-17, & 70+ years

27 UIC DPT Clinical Education Incorporates part-time clinical experiences integrated throughout the curriculum First ½ day clinical experience in Fall of first semester We have a strong relationship with UIHHSS & other clinical sites in IL, throughout the US, and continuing to develop internationally.

28 UIC DPT Clinical Education Over 200 sites throughout the US Chicago, IL, Nationwide, and continuing to develop internationally Personal Transportation is required Students should expect to travel & plan for additional expenses Close contact & communication fostered with students & Clinical Instructors. Students participate in tri-weekly meetings while out on internships (internship updates, case discussions, article reviews, etc.)
