4 KNOW YOUR LITURGY Ordinary Time Ordinary Time is called "ordinary" not because it is common but simply because the weeks of Ordinary Time are numbered. The Latin word ordinalis, which refers to numbers in a series, stems from the Latin word ordo, from which we get the English word order. Thus, the numbered weeks of Ordinary Time in fact represent the ordered life of the Church the period in which we live our lives neither in feasting (as in the Christmas and Easter seasons) or in more severe penance (as in Advent and Lent), but in watchfulness and expectation of the Second Coming of Christ. It's appropriate, therefore, that the Gospel for the Second Sunday of Ordinary Time (which is actually the first Sunday celebrated in Ordinary Time) always features either John the Baptist's acknowledgment of Christ as the Lamb of God or Christ's first miracle the transformation of water into wine at the wedding at Cana. Thus for Catholics, Ordinary Time is the part of the year in which Christ, the Lamb of God, walks among us and transforms our lives. There's nothing "ordinary" about that! Why Is There No First Sunday in Ordinary Time? In most years, the Sunday after January 6 is the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. In countries such as the United States, however, where the celebration of Epiphany is transferred to Sunday, if that Sunday is January 7 or 8, Epiphany is celebrated instead. As feasts of our Lord, both the Baptism of the Lord and Epiphany displace a Sunday in Ordinary Time. Thus the first Sunday in the period of Ordinary Time is the Sunday that falls after the first week of Ordinary Time, which makes it the Second Sunday of Ordinary Time. (Source: catholicism.about.com) St. Vincent de Paul monthly meeting February 7, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. at the Store 675 South Albert Ave. In the Gospel today, we read The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us filled with enduring love. As you place your gift in the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Poor Box, know that you are a sign of God s enduring love to those who are suffering and you give them reason to believe and to trust. PASTORAL MINISTRY DEACON TOM "It is better to be a child of God than king of the whole world!" St. Aloysius Gonzaga "If you want God to hear your prayers, hear the voice of the poor. If you wish God to anticipate your wants, provide those of the needy without waiting for them to ask you." St. Thomas of Villanova Trials, tribulation, anguish, anxiety are permitted by the very One Who gives peace." Archbishop Fulton Sheen "We must always remember that God does everything well, although we may not see the reason of what He does." St. Philip Neri JUSTICE & PEACE Although National Migration Week just ended, we are not forgetting its importance. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops issued the following information regarding Justice for Immigrants: For nearly a half century, the Catholic Church in the United States has celebrated National Migration Week. National Migration Week is an opportunity to recognize the contributions of immigrants, refugees, migrants, and survivors of human trafficking in our communities as well as to highlight the work of the Church to serve and accompany newcomers. The theme for National Migration Week 2017 draws attention to Pope Francis' call to create a culture of encounter. In the homily given at his first Pentecost as Pope, he emphasized the importance of encounter in the Christian faith: For me this word is very important. Encounter with others. Why? Because faith is an encounter with Jesus, and we must do what Jesus does: encounter others. " In support of immigrants and refugees, we are asked to send the following request to our U.S. Senators and Members of Congress: Dear (Senator/Representative): As a Catholic, I believe in the human dignity of all immigrants and refugees. With more than 65 million people displaced from their homes, we are currently witnesses to the worst refugee crisis since World War Two. I celebrate the contributions of refugees and immigrants in our churches, communities and in our country. I ask that you, as an elected official: Initiate and support human immigration reform in the next Congress, and Recognize the contributions of immigrants and refugees in your community. Sincerely, 4 January 15, 2017 Sacred Heart Church
