11 Exam skills Before Exams Start preparing NOW! Prepare your exam study timetable Check day, time, and venue for exams have a friend check times Attend the LAST LECTURES! Exam tips are often provided Review past exam papers if available Set up study groups Write summary notes this should have started from your first week of semester! Revision One Notes: Fuller notes Revision Two Notes: Cut-down, reduced notes Revision Three Notes: Bullet-point notes, great to study from on exam day

12 Before Exams (the day before) Re-check day, time, and venue Go to the venue at least ONE HOUR BEFORE the exam time Prepare equipment - ID card, pens, etc. Set alarm(s)! Get a good night s sleep Exam skills On the day, review your R3 notes DON T attempt to read the entire textbook! Do NOT take notes and electronic devices into the exam WITHOUT prior permission

13 On Exam Day/In the Exam Reading time (10 mins) Read all instructions Look at whole paper Exam skills Allocate time for each question Decide on questions and order - easy ones first But don t leave compulsory questions until last If you go over time answering other questions, you may forget to answer the compulsory ones!

14 Exam skills On Exam Day/In the Exam Reading time (10 mins); Checking time (10 mins) Allocate time for each question: Planning + Writing + Checking Even Weighting E.g. 3-hour exam with 4 essays Uneven Weighting E.g. 3-hour exam in two sections Section A: 60 % Section B: 40%

Multiple Choice Read question and all answers watch for negative questions, e.g.: Which one of these is NOT Eliminate obvious wrong answers Surrounding questions may help Exam skills Guess - first guess is sometimes the best Circle questions you are unsure and come back to them if you have time If you think you have the answer, re-read the question before making your final choice KEEP TO TIME

Short Answer Answer the question focus on task or directive words The format of your answer depends on the question it may require a paragraph answer, or bullet points The number of points you make in the answer depends on how many marks, e.g. 4 marks = 4 points made in the answer Include key words or technical terms KEEP TO TIME Exam skills

Open book exams For these exams, you can take books and notes into the exam with you You may use them to answer your questions This type of exam requires a thorough knowledge of your subject and good preparation Select the material you wish to take into the exam with you carefully Have your material well organised so that you can access information quickly and easily KEEP TO TIME Exam skills

Seen exams Exam skills These exams are provided ahead of the exam time This type of exam requires a thorough knowledge of your subject and good preparation The expectations regarding the quality of the answer is higher e.g. you may be expected to include references and have a clear structure to the answer similar to an essay format, etc. KEEP TO TIME

22 Answering Exam Questions 5. Problems Make sure you know which formula to use Write formula, then put in values, include all steps in working out, & underline your answer (sometimes if the final answer is wrong, you may receive some marks for following the correct steps) KEEP TO TIME Exam skills

23 Exam skills Answering Exam Questions 6. Essay Questions Do a plan -organise main ideas into logical sequence. Use essay format Introduction - thesis Paragraphs - support Conclusion - restate thesis Answer the question - follow direction words KEEP TO TIME

24 Answering Exam Questions Final Points Practise writing answers by hand Exam skills How many pages can you write in one hour? And over 3 hours? Write clearly & simply, using short sentences and easy vocabulary Write on alternate lines; leave spaces between paragraphs If out of time on an answer, then use bullet points NEVER WRITE PAST THE TIME LIMIT (you gain the most marks in the early stages of your answer) Be positive, lecturers actually do want to give you marks, it s your chance to show what you know (or else reveal your ignorance) Don t cheat, don t even think about it, or attempt it IT S NOT WORTH IT!

Who to contact: your lecturer, programme leader or programme administrator When: asap [or at least within 14 days of the date of the exam] Warning: If you don t have a valid reason for missing the exam, or have not notified the teaching department within the required time, you will receive a failing grade for your examination... It is also a good idea to talk to a Student Advisor for assistance.
