3 Install the Genius Hub The Genius Hub is the main controller for the system. It listens to all of the temperature sensors and talks to all of the valves and receiver units Ensure that the Genius Hub is in an open space and not hidden away behind any heavy objects. Use the short internet cable (provided) to link the Genius Hub to the broadband router. Plug the USB power cable into the power supply included with the Genius Hub and plug the power supply into a wall socket (not an extension lead). The low power wireless communication to other devices is easily stopped by thick walls, large objects and water. For more information of how to connect the Genius Hub please go to: 2

4 Install the Thermostat The thermostat is the master controller for all of the rooms in the house. The temperature it measures is used to determine whether or not to turn on the rooms which do not have room sensors. It is important to site it in a cool (ideally north facing room) so that it will always allow rooms to come on when they are set to, on the app Place the thermostat on a wall and in radio range ofthe Genius Hub. Insert the 2 x AAA batteries into the back of the thermostat. Within 20 minutes the thermostat will report a temperature back to the app (if it does not it will need to be moved closer to the Genius Hub). 5 Install the Boiler Controller Combination Boilers In many cases you can swap the boiler programmer or wired house thermostat with the Heat Genius Single Channel Receiver. You need to ensure that terminals L, N, 2, & 4 on the Heat Genius Single Channel Receiver are wired correctly. Boiler programmers and wired house thermostats often use a standard back-plate. You can remove the screws from the underside of an existing programmer or thermostat and swap the existing programmer for the Heat Genius Single Channel Receiver. Note that where the old house thermostat is no longer required, the wiring should be removed or linked through. If there is no existing boiler programmer then the Single Channel Receiver must be wired into the boiler as if it were an external programmer or thermostat. See wiring diagrams provided by the boiler manufacturer to confirm the wiring guides provided with this installation manual. 6 The Single Channel and Dual Channel receiver units are rated to 3A maximum. THEY CAN ONLY BE USED TO SWITCH A ZONE VALVE OR A BOILER AND NOT A CIRCULATION PUMP. CONTROLLING A CIRCULATION PUMP WILL RESULT IN DAMAGING THE RECEIVER UNIT! System Boilers The existing programmer must be exchanged with the Heat Genius Dual Channel Receiver to control the heating and the hot water. Where there is an existing house thermostat (often in the hallway), the battery-powered Heat Genius Thermostat can replace where the old wired house thermostat used to be located. Note that because the wiring for the old house thermostat is no longer required, it should be removed or linked through back at the boiler. Where the customer has chosen to control only their heating using the Heat Genius system, the existing programmer must be set to 'Always On' for the heating and the Single Channel Receiver replaces the existing House Thermostat. Please choose the correct wiring diagram from those included for the customer's heating system at the wiring centre. Do not leave any wiring behind the Heat Genius Thermostat live after it has been installed. If there is no existing programmer then the Dual Channel Receiver should be wired directly into the wiring centre to control the zone valve(s). See wiring diagrams provided by the boiler manufacturer to confirm the wiring in this installation manual. 5

8 Install the Underfloor Controller(s) This chapter is only applicable to systems where Heat Genius will be controlling Wet Underfloor heating. The existing underfloor heating programmer/thermostat must be exchanged with the relevant Heat Genius Receiver. The Single/Dual Channel Receivers behave like a wired room thermostat by sending a switched live (or volt-free contact if using the Single Channel Receiver) to the underfloor heating wiring centre(s) when there is a call for heat in a zone. There is no requirement for a programmer to be connected to the underfloor heating wiring centre. All of the control should be done from the Heat Genius receiver units. See wiring diagrams provided by the underfloor heating manufacturer to confirm the wiring in this installation manual. 7

9 Dual Channel Receivers are only to be used with 230v wiring centres. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO WIRE IN YOUR RECEIVER UNITS IF YOU ARE NOT 100% SURE WHAT YOU ARE DOING. DANGER OF ELECTRIC SHOCK! THEY CAN ONLY BE USED TO SWITCH UNDERFLOOR ZONES BY USING A COMPATIBLE WIRING CENTRE AND SHOULD NOT BE WIRED DIRECTLY TO A CIRCULATION PUMP. 10 Set up the Smart Plugs The Smart Plugs are used to relay the messages to and from the Genius Hub and the Radiator Valves, Room Sensors, Receiver Units and Thermostat. The signal travels in straight lines and the only devices that relay the messages are the Smart Plugs and the Receiver Units. The signals do not bend or bounce, so when positioning think about how thick the wall is that the signal is going to have to pass through to get back to the Genius Hub. If only one Smart Plug is provided position it halfway between the Genius Hub and the furthest other device in the house. For large properties with more Smart Plugs, they will need to be plugged into wall sockets in a central location. Ideally the Smart Plugs will be positioned with one on each floor directly above or below the Genius Hub. For the best signal strength, there should be one Smart Plug between each solid wall in the property, and all of the plugs are put upstairs, as the walls are generally thinner upstairs and the signal goes through floors easily. 11 Add the Radiator Valves The Radiator Valves are electronic and communicate wirelessly with the Genius Hub, telling the system what temperature the room has been set to, and controlling each radiator to a target temperature. Each Radiator Valve comes with two adaptors. The two adaptors convert this to an M30x1.5mm thread (the UK standard) or a Danfoss RA fitting. 1. Place 2 x AA batteries in the valve, a 21 or 4 should appear on the screen. 2. Press and hold the middle button for 3 seconds until an M appears on the screen. 3. Press the middle button again until the valve buzzes and the underside plunger retracts up inside the valve. The M will now flash on the screen showing the valve is in 'mount mode'. The Valve must be in mount mode when being attached to the radiator. 4. Screw the valve down onto the radiator if using the M30 x 1.5mm adaptor, or attach the RA adaptor & valve onto the radiator & tighten up the grub screw. If using the Danfoss RA adapter make sure that the grub screw is done up very tight as the adapters can work loose over time. 5. Press and hold the middle button for 3 seconds until the valve starts to buzz and 21 or 4 appears on the screen. 10

12 Make sure you leave the old TRVs in the property with the customer in case they want to move and take the Heat Genius system with them. For more information and to see videos of how to mount the radiator valves please go to: anual/i6 11

13 Add the Room Sensors Fix the Room Sensor temporarily to the wall using the thick black sticky pad, for the first two weeks. Once the customer is happy with the position they can use the long thin sticky pads provided to stick it to the wall. 3 golden rules of positioning the room sensors: Internal Wall - to stop the room sensor from under reading from being on a cold surface. Chest Height - The field of vision is 175º left to right and 40º up and down. Position 1.5m from the ground to give the best view and accurate temperature (not the ceiling temperature). Facing The Occupants Of The Room - in rooms when people are sitting (lounges and offices) make sure the sensors are facing the front of the occupants so the sensor can see any movement in the room. 14 Check Device Communication STOP! The smart plugs and single/dual channel receivers will not work effectively unless Heat Genius technical support configures the wireless network before you leave the property. You must phone Heat Genius before you continue If there is an error with any of the devices then it is likely that they either need to be moved into a location where they are closer to a Smart Plug, a Receiver Unit or the Genius Hub. Or one of the Smart Plugs needs to be moved slightly closer to the problem device. Before you register your system, there will be an error on the 'Whole House' stating that the system cannot get weather data. This is because the system is not registered and the Genius Hub has not been given a post code. When the system is registered it is given a new username, password and post code so the data stored on the Genius Hub is secure, and weather data for the property can be received. 13

15 Login to the App When first installed all Genius Hubs have a temporary username. To login for the first time to an 'unregistered system', locate the blue ID on the bottom of the Genius Hub: This is your temporary username, unique to your Genius Hub (to login do not include any spaces). There is no password associated with this username and so the password field should be left empty. For details on how to login with a web browser or where to download the Heat Genius app from, please see Chapter 1 of the User Guide. 14

16 Test the system The Valve Seating Test 1. Override one room to 28ºC on the app. Ideally choose a room that only has only one radiator. 2. Check the relay on Receiver Unit is active. a. Single Channel Receiver - shows a green light. b. Dual Channel Receiver - hold down heating button, light goes green (not red). 3. Check the boiler fires as normal and the correct zone valve has opened (if a system boiler that has zone valves). 4. Check that the central heating pipe from the zone valve or boiler gets hot. 5. Wait 10 minutes, then check the radiator in & out pipes and that each radiator is COLD not HOT! (Except for the overridden room). This confirms all the valves are properly seated on the radiators, and they can turn the radiators off. The Communication Test Override 'Whole House' to 28ºC on App (Click 'Override' in Whole House, select all of the rooms and choose 1h 00m). You must wait 10 minutes for all of the valves to wake up on their own. Check all the rooms receive the new set point temperature on the app. Make sure the radiator valves have received the message by pressing any of the three buttons to light up the screen. Each valve should read the Override temperature, i.e. 28ºC. The radiators do not need to warm up. The valves can take up to 30 minutes to react when newly installed. This confirms all of the valves have good communication with the Genius Hub. 15

17 The Hot Water Test Only complete if hot water control is installed Override the Hot Water on the app for 1h 00m. Check the relay on dual/single channel receiver is active. a. Single channel receiver - shows a green light. b. Dual channel receiver - hold down hot water white button, light goes green (not red). Check the boiler fires as normal and the correct zone valve has opened. This confirms the Genius Hub has control over the hot water. 16

18 Hand over to the user Show the customer the app and their rooms on the app. Also show them the different modes a room can be in: Off, Timer, Footprint (rooms with Room Sensors only) & Override. The modes are changed by clicking on the black mode selector icon Help the customer Register their Genius Hub by showing them the red banner at the top of the page. When clicked, this will load up the registration page on the device's web browser. The customer can now enter their details and choose the Username and Password at their leisure. When a system is registered it is provided with the location data of the hub allowing it to get the weather data. This removes the related error icon from Whole House.
