inno home 1.1 Structure of the safety system 1. Innohome safety system and its use The Innohome cooker safety system is composed of a Stove Alarm, a Stove Guard, and an optional Wireless Alarm Receiver TM13. The Stove Alarm, the Stove Guard and the Wireless Alarm Receiver communicate using a radio connection. Using Wireless Alarm Receivers, the alarm can be transmitted to several rooms. Both the Stove Guard and the Stove Alarm have individual safety features which are described in section 1.2. The Stove Alarm emits a warning signal if the cooker becomes too hot or if an empty hotplate is left on. The alarm is transmitted to the Stove Guard which cuts off the gas/electricity supply to the cooker. The alarm is also transmitted to Wireless Alarm Receivers TM13 (optional). The Stove Alarm is attached to the range hood with magnets, or on the wall, approximately 16 (40 cm) above the cooker. The push button on the Stove Alarm is used for various functions (see section 2.2.). The light will light up at one minute intervals whenever the Stove Alarm is on. The Stove Guard is installed between the cooker and the mains electricity supply. For gas cookers, the Stove Guard is plugged into a socket near the gas cooker, and an electrical valve (available as an accessory), controlled by the Stove Guard, is installed in the gas supply. The Stove Guard has an alarm output that allows it to be linked to other alarm systems. The Wireless Alarm Receiver TM13 is an additional safety device (available separately) that is especially useful for persons with visual or hearing impairments, or with memory or cognitive disorders. Using the Wireless Alarm Receiver, the alarm is transferred to additional signalling devices such as flashing lights or vibrating alarms. 1.2 Features and their use a) Hotplate Monitoring The Stove Alarm measures temperature and temperature changes above the cooker. The Hotplate Monitoring alarm is triggered if the temperature change is faster than in normal cooking or if the overall temperature exceeds safe levels. The alarm is triggered in 3 to 25 minutes. A warning signal is emitted one minute before the actual alarm starts. By responding to this warning signal, you can cancel the alarm. If the warning signal is not reset, the Stove Alarm will emit an alarm signal and transmit the signal to the Stove Guard. The Stove Guard will then cut off the gas/electricity supply to the cooker. 1

Stove Guard Kit User Manual 1. Innohome safety system and its use (continued) a) Hotplate Monitoring (continued) Both the warning signal and the Hotplate Monitoring alarm signal are reset by either pressing the Stove Alarm button TWICE if the alarm was triggered by a hazardous situation (memory rule thank you ) or ONCE if the alarm was triggered falsely by a normal cooking situation (memory rule no ). At the beginning of product use, the sensitivity level of the Stove Alarm needs to adjust to the user s cooker. This may result in false alarms at first. The Stove Alarm responds to the user s indication of a false alarm by adjusting the sensitivity level automatically. Please note that the Hotplate Monitoring alarm is not triggered if the temperature of the hotplate is not high enough for the Stove Alarm to identify a hazardous situation or if the cooker automatically limits the increase in temperature. The Stove Alarm is an additional safety device that does not necessarily cover all possible hazardous situations, but that significantly improves the safety of the cooker. b) Intelligent Timer The Intelligent Timer identifies when the cooker has been left on accidentally. The timer starts automatically when a hotplate is turned on. If the power is not adjusted, as it would be during cooking, the Stove Guard cuts the gas/electricity supply to the cooker. The cut off time is determined by the amount of energy used by the hotplates: the higher the power setting the faster the gas/electricity supply to the hotplate is cut off. The cut off time varies from half an hour to two and a half hours. The Intelligent Timer is designed to react only in hazardous situations. The power will not be cut off during cooking, even when the cooker is used for an extended period of time. When the power is cut off by the Intelligent Timer, the Stove Guard starts to emit an alarm signal. Turn off the cooker hobs and restore the power connection by pressing the Stove Alarm button once. Note: For some cookers with an electronic user interface, the Intelligent Timer will not start when a hotplate is turned on at a very low heat. This is because these cookers have a high standby energy consumption rate. c) Alarm Signal Detection (fire, carbon monoxide and gas alarms) When the Stove Guard detects an alarm signal from an additional fire, carbon monoxide or gas alarm, the Stove Guard cuts the gas/electricity supply to the cooker. The Stove Guard is factory set to identify most fire/co/gas alarm signals. When the power is cut off due to Alarm Signal Detection, the Stove Guard starts to emit a signal. Reconnect the power by pressing the Stove Alarm button once. The Alarm Signal Detection can be deactivated using the jumper on the Stove Alarm (see section 5. Options). All fire/co/gas alarms should be located within 16.5ft (5 metres) of the Stove Guard to ensure accurate detection. 2

5 2 inno home 1. Innohome safety system and its use (continued) d) Cooker knob Safety Lock The cooker knob Safety Lock makes sure that the hotplates are not turned on accidentally. This greatly reduces the likelihood of hazardous situations caused by children, pets, or people with memory/cognitive disorders. The Safety Lock can only be used on electrical cookers with mechanical knobs. When the Safety Lock feature is in use, the electricity supply to the hotplates is cut off approximately 20 minutes after stopping using the hotplates. The electricity is reconnected by pushing the Stove Alarm button once or by turning one of the cooker knobs on and off three times at one second intervals (turn on, turn off - wait 1 sec. - turn on, turn off - wait 1 sec. - turn on, turn off). The Stove Guard will emit a signal as the electricity is reconnected. The Safety Lock feature is activated and deactivated during the Stove Guard set-up (see section 6.). 2.1 Resetting the Hotplate Monitor alarm 2. Quick guide to the safety system 1x False alarm x Correct alarm Turn off the cooker hobs 3

Stove Guard Kit User Manual 2. Quick guide to the safety system (continued) 2.1 Resetting the Hotplate Monitor alarm (continued) After the Stove Alarm is installed, it needs to be taught not to react in normal cooking situations. If the Alarm signalled in a hazardous situation, reset it by pressing the Stove Alarm button TWICE (memory rule Thank you ). If the Stove Alarm starts to signal in a normal cooking situation, reset the alarm by pressing the button ONCE (memory rule No ). Thus the manner in which the Stove Alarm is reset adjusts its sensitivity accordingly. Please note that for 30 minutes following an alarm, the Stove Alarm will only react if the maximum temperature is exceeded, and will not respond to the rate of temperature change. 2.2 Functions of the Stove Alarm button Push the button (1) on top of the Stove Alarm for the following functions: Reset the alarm and reconnect the power to the cooker (when the Alarm is signalling): Wrong alarm: Press the push button once Correct alarm: Press the push button twice Turn the Safety Lock off to use the cooker: Press the push button once Reconnect the power to the cooker when the Stove Guard is signalling: Press the push button once Do a test alarm: Press the button until you hear a signal The screw (2) on the bottom of the alarm opens the cover for changing the battery. The light (3) will light up at one minute intervals whenever the Stove Alarm is on. 4

inno home 2.3 Meaning of alarm signals 2. Quick guide to the safety system (continued) The Stove Alarm signal has a higher tone than the Stove Guard signal. Sound Meaning Course of Action Stove Alarm: a short beep every few seconds Stove Alarm: repetitive fast beep, beep, beep Stove Guard: a short signal every few seconds Stove Guard: two short beeps (after turning the Safety Lock off) Stove Guard: a signal every half an hour or every hour Stove Alarm (and the Stove Guard): a signal once a minute The Stove Alarm has detected a high temperature or a fast temperature rise on the cooker's surface (Hotplate Monitoring). This is a warning signal which starts one minute before the actual alarm. By resetting the warning signal, the alarm is cancelled. The Stove Alarm has detected a high temperature or a fast temperature rise on the cooker's surface (Hotplate Monitoring). The gas/electricity has been cut off. The gas/electricity has been cut off either due to the Intelligent Timer function, detection of an external alarm signal, or the Hotplate Monitor detecting a high temperature. The Safety Lock has been turned off and the electricity reconnected to the cooker. There has been an error in the set-up procedure. The Stove Alarm has a weak battery. Reset the warning signal by pushing the push button once (false alarm) or twice (correct alarm), see section 2.1. Turn off the cooker hobs. Reset the alarm signal by pushing the push button once (false alarm) or twice (correct alarm), see section 2.1. Turn off the cooker hobs. Push the button on the Stove Alarm once. The cooker can now be used. Repeat the set-up procedure. Replace the battery. Pushing the button on the Stove Alarm once will postpone the battery alarm for 12 hours. 5

Stove Guard Kit User Manual 3. Monthly Maintenance Test the functionality of the system at least once a month with the following tests: 1. Turn one of the hotplates on at medium heat. 2. Press the Stove Alarm button until you hear a signal and the Stove Guard cuts the gas/electricity supply to the cooker. Reconnect the gas/electricity by pressing the Stove Alarm button twice. 3. Do alarm Signal Detection tests as described in section Reconnect the gas/electricity by pushing the Stove Alarm button once. Clean the Stove Alarm by wiping it with a cloth dampened with a mixture of household detergent and water. Use only a cloth that does not leave fibres. Ensure that the batteries are good for all other alarms being used with your Innohome system and that the alarms are cleaned according to their instructions. 4. Weak battery alarm A weak battery in the Stove Alarm causes both the Stove Alarm and the Stove Guard to emit a signal once a minute. The battery alarm can be reset by pushing the Stove Alarm button once. The battery alarm will restart after 12 hours if the battery has not been replaced. Empty battery in the Stove Alarm does not effect the safety features of the Stove Guard. Unscrewing the screw on the bottom of the Alarm (2, see picture in section 5.) opens the cover for changing the battery. Use CR2016 type batteries. 6

inno home 5. Stove Alarm Installation 1. Remove the Stove Alarm from the packaging and allow it to reach room temperature, waiting for around 15 minutes Remove the protective plastic strip from the Stove Alarm. The Alarm will emit a signal as the power is connected. Initialize the Stove Alarm by pressing the push button (1) once. 3. Attach the Stove Alarm to the range hood with magnets, directly above the central point of the cooker but not too close to the lights. 3 2 Alternatively the Stove Alarm can be attached using screws (remove the magnets first) or using adhesive tape (4). If the cooker has no range hood, the Stove Alarm can be attached to the wall, approximately 16 (40 cm) above the cooker The sensitivity level. The sensitivity level is factory set to suit most installations. If this level is unsuitable for your cooker and results in false alarms, the Stove Alarm will automatically adjust the sensitivity level according to your response to the alarm (see section 2.1.). However, if the installation height is different from the usual (50-60 cm) when installed under the cooker hood, the sensitivity level may need to be manually adjusted (see section 9). 2 5 Options: Optional features are turned on/off using jumpers (5, picture above). A jumper is a small piece of plastic (actually a short conductor) that can be removed or changed to another position. 4 3 Silent alarm: Remove the jumper (7) from the 4-5 position. Deactivation of the Alarm Signal Detection: Change the jumper (6) from the position 2-3 to the position Setting communication with Wireless Alarm Receiver TM13 The communication link between the Stove Alarm and the Wireless Alarm Receiver starts automatically. However, if you already have devices that use X.10 technology, or if, for example, the Wireless Alarm Receiver responds to your neighbour s Stove Alarm, the house address of the Wireless Alarm Receiver needs to be changed manually (see section 10.). 7

5 Stove Guard Kit User Manual 6. Stove Guard Installation If the cooker is connected to the mains electricity via a plug and socket, the Stove Guard can be installed by the user. Otherwise, the installation needs to be carried out by a qualified electrician. 1. Installation Turn the electricity off at the mains switch. Attach the Stove Guard to the wall using screws, near the electricity outlet. Installation by user: connect the Stove Guard between the cooker s plug and the socket. Installation by an electrician: connect the Stove Guard to the socket using an Innohome socket with a connector or an Innohome connection cable. 2. Start the Set-up procedure (Make sure the mains switch is turned off first). Turn the electricity on at the mains switch. Wait for 5 seconds and turn the electricity off. Wait for 15 seconds and turn it on again. Once the Stove Guard is connected to the electricity it will emit a signal. This means that the user now has 20 seconds to carry out the set-up procedure. The Stove Guard will emit another signal 20 seconds later. 3. Stove Guard Set-up procedure Choose the correct set-up procedure from the following options: A cooker with electric dials/ a gas cooker: No set-up procedure needed. Wait until you hear a signal to signify the end of the 20 second set-up time, then continue to step 4. An electrical cooker with mechanical knobs: If you wish to use the Safety Lock function: Turn any of the hotplates on for 5 seconds, then turn it off. Wait until you hear a signal to signify the end of the 20 second set-up time, then continue to step 4. Safety Lock disabled: Turn a hotplate on, wait until you hear a beep from the Stove Guard, then turn it off. Then continue to step Pairing the Stove Alarm with the Stove Guard You now have 20 seconds to pair the Stove Alarm and the Stove Guard. Press the push button (1, see picture in section 5.) on the Stove Alarm until you hear a signal from both the Stove Alarm and the Stove Guard. The Stove Alarm and the Stove Guard have now been paired. The Stove Alarm will emit an alarm signal and the Stove Guard will cut the gas/electricity supply to the cooker. Restore the power connection by pressing the Stove Alarm button once. If you want to perform the set-up procedure again, start from step 2. 8

inno home 7. Testing after Installation 7.1 Stove Alarm test Turn the largest hotplate up to its maximum heat. The Stove Alarm will signal in 3-10 minutes and as a result, the Stove Guard will cut the gas/electricity supply to the cooker. To reconnect the gas/electricity, first make sure that all the hotplates are turned off (cookers with mechanical knobs only). Reset the alarm by pushing the Stove Alarm button twice. If the Stove Alarm does not respond to the test adjust the sensitivity level manually, see section 9. If you want to repeat this test, please wait for 30 minutes before trying again as the Stove Alarm needs to return to room temperature before re-testing. 7.2 Alarm Signal Detection test Turn the smallest hotplate to medium heat and make test alarms with fire, carbon monoxide and gas alarms, one at a time. When detecting an alarm signal the Stove Guard will cut the gas/electricity supply to the cooker and emit a repetitive signal. Reconnect the gas/electricity by pushing the Stove Alarm button once. 7.3 Safety Lock test (if activated during the installation) Make sure all the hotplates are turned off. The Safety Lock will activate in 20 minutes and the electricity to the hotplates will be switched off. Test the Safety Lock by trying to turn the hotplates on one by one. Reset the Safety Lock by pushing the Stove Alarm button once or turn one of the cooker knobs on and off three times at one second intervals (turn on, turn off - wait 1 sec. - turn on, turn off - wait 1 sec. - turn on, turn off). The Guard will emit two signals after a short pause, indicating that the electricity has been reconnected. 8. Checking the Stove Guard settings The Stove Guard settings can be checked by turning the power of the cooker off using the mains switch and turning it back on after 15 seconds. The Stove Guard will then emit signals to inform you about its settings. BEEP - 20 seconds break - BEEP - BEEP A cooker with electric dials BEEP - BEEP - 20 seconds break - BEEP Mechanical knobs, Safety Lock activated BEEP - 20 seconds break - BEEP Mechanical knobs, Safety Lock deactivated 9

Stove Guard Kit User Manual 9. Setting the sensitivity level of the Stove Alarm The sensitivity level determines the rate of temperature change required to activate the Stove Alarm. The Stove Alarm responds to the user indicating a false alarm (see section 2.1.) by adjusting the sensitivity level automatically. If the Stove Alarm does not respond correctly to the test situation described in section 7.1., the sensitivity level needs to be manually adjusted to a more sensitive level. The level is indicated by the numbers 1 to 16, where 1 represents the most sensitive level, and 16, the least sensitive level. The factory setting is 5. As a first step, adjust the sensitivity level to 4 and then carry out the test again. Optionally, the Stove Alarm may also be moved closer to the cooker (see diagram below) cm inches This diagram shows the required sensitivity level (left column) for the distance of the Stove Alarm from the top of the cooker (at the bottom). Setting the sensitivity level manually: 1. Hold the Stove Alarm button for about 5 seconds, until you hear a signal. 2. Release the button and hold again until the Stove Alarm emits a signal. 3. Now press the button as many times as the level (1-16) you wish to set it to. Wait for the light to go off between each press of the button. 4. The Stove Alarm will now emit twice as many signals as the set level is, in two lots: 2+2 signals for level 2; 3+3 signals for level 3; 4+4 signals for level 4 and so on. 10

inno home 10. Wireless Alarm Receiver TM13 The Wireless Alarm Receiver TM13 is a radio controlled socket that receives an RF signal sent by the Stove Alarm. The RF signal is sent during the Hotplate Monitoring warning signal. The Wireless Alarm Receiver will then activate any device that is connected to it, such as a flashing light or a vibrating alarm. The Stove Alarm and the Wireless Alarm Receiver communicate using X.10 technology. The communication link between the Stove Alarm and the Wireless Alarm Receiver starts automatically. However, if you already have devices that use X.10 technology, or if, for example, the Wireless Alarm Receiver responds to your neighbour s Stove Alarm, the house address of the Wireless Alarm Receiver TM13 needs to be changed manually Setting the address of the TM13 manually The factory setting of the house address is A. The Unit address for the Stove Alarm is always 1. Set different addresses for devices that you do not want to communicate with each other. Setting the address 1. Hold the button on the Stove Alarm for about 10 seconds and wait for two signals 2. Press the Stove Alarm button for one second and wait for a signal 3. Press the Stove Alarm button as many times as the appropriate address (1:A, 2:B 16:P) Wait for the light to go off between each button press 4. Set the dial on the TM13 to match the correct house address (1:A, 2:B 16:P), see the picture above 11. Alarm output The alarm output is a 3.5mm stereo jack found on the Stove Guard. The alarm output is a normally open type (opto) and it closes for one second when the Stove Guard cuts the gas or electricity supply. If the alarm output does not work properly, change the polarity of the cable connecting to the alarm output. OC1 CN1 Alarm out NO 11

Stove Guard Kit User Manual 12. Troubleshooting The Alarm sounds in a non-hazardous situation After the Stove Alarm is installed, it needs to be taught not to react in normal cooking situations. If the Stove Alarm starts to signal in a normal cooking situation, reset the alarm by pressing the button ONCE (memory rule No ). The Stove Alarm test failed (section 7.1.) Set the sensitivity level to a lower number (see Setting the sensitivity level section 9.). If the Alarm neither emits a signal nor flashes its light when the button is pressed, the battery may be empty. To change the battery, open the case by unscrewing the screw (2, see picture in section 5.). Use CR2016 type batteries. If the device still does not work, contact the retailer. The Stove Guard signals every half an hour or hour Repeat the installation set-up procedure. See section 6. The Stove Guard did not identify the alarm signal of the fire/co/gas alarm Clean the alarm with a vacuum cleaner. Change the batteries in the alarm if necessary. Check that the alarm is not located too far from the Stove Guard. The alarms should be located at a maximum distance of 16.5ft (5 metres). Adjust the signal recognition frequency using the trimmer on the Stove Guard (frequency adjustment, see the picture). Turn the trimmer slowly between tests until the Stove Guard identifies the signal. Frequency adjustment The Stove Guard responds to other sounds e.g. a telephone ringing or noise from a television Change the telephone s ring tone or turn down the volume of the television. It is also possible to disable the Alarm Signal Detection feature, see section 5. Options. The Safety Lock did not activate within 20 minutes Check the setting of the Stove Guard as advised in section 8. If the Safety Lock was not activated, redo the set-up process as described in section 6. The Intelligent Timer did not cut off the electricity supply in 2.5 hours It is likely that the cooker has an electronic user interface. If so, the Intelligent Timer will not start when a hotplate is on at a very low heat. This is because these types of cookers have a high standby energy consumption rate. 12
