Introduction: An Innovative DIY Design - Making your own touch screen size is as easy as playing kid s building blocks. You can connect IR transmitter and receiver segments to build touch screen from 5.15 x 5.15 to 70.4 x 70.4 with any aspect ratio. No more will you need to buy a new larger touch screen when upgrading your display to a larger size, just add new segments. As long as you can build your own IR screen from segments by mounting them onto a custom frame, you will no longer need to pay high freight charge for shipping an over-sized package, because you only need to purchase a small box of components. Current model is for USB interface and compatible with Windows 2000 & XP, Vista, and Intel Mac. 2. Technology Overview: Figure 1.

5 6. Assembly Instructions: 6.1. Determine the number of segments you need for horizontal and vertical directions (an Excel worksheet is available) Place the needed segments on the mounting material (Plexiglas, wood or plastic frame, etc.) with LED s facing to the center. The receiver segment (blue LED) should be placed at bottom and right sides, and the transistor segments (clear LED) should be placed at top and left sides Connect the segments carefully without causing damage on the connectors. If a pin is bent, use a pair of tweezers to straighten it carefully Connect the IRCC corners according to the label UL for upper left corner, UR for upper right corner, LL for lower left corner. IRSC is the special corner board, which is connected to the controller Make sure the connected segments are in straight line and form 90-degree angle between the horizontal and vertical assembly Example for a 42 (16:9 ratio) assembly: Figure Use the tape to secure the assembly, so they won t move during the mounting Drill holes through each mounting hole on the PCB, and fasten the PCB by screws to finger tight only.

6 The finished IR touch screen assembly with a custom wooden frame. Handle it carefully. Do not twist, bend or drop it. Always hold the controller and cable when moving the frame. The back side of the IR touch screen frame. Four sets of Velcro strips (red circled) are attached for mounting to the display. The IR screen frame should be handled by 2 persons to mount onto the display. Hold the controller and cable while moving the frame. Do not twist or drop the frame. If you send the display to us for mounting, or purchase the IR touch screen with a display from us. The matching Velcro strips will have already been adhered on the display. If you purchase the IR touch screen only, remove the liner film from Velcro strips before mounting. Mount the IR touch screen. Press on top and bottom front to secure the Velcro. Follow the steps described in the manual to install the controller and driver, and complete the calibration procedure. The OPTIR Touch is now ready for use. When removing the IR touch screen frame, loose the Velcro at bottom first, then the top. Do not force it as the frame might get damaged by bending it.

7 The OPTIR Touch is a frame assembled with IR sensors. There is no overlay in front of the display. Please consult with your display manual or supplier about protecting and cleaning the surface of the display. 7. Driver Installation: 7.1. A USB controller and Windows 2000/XP/Vista driver are included. DO NOT install this driver if you intend to use Vista embedded tablet driver. See instruction at Mac driver is included only when the Mac version is purchased Insert the driver CD into CD Rom Click to select USB controller, then click install button When prompted for plug into the controller. Plug the controller into USB port. Windows shows found new hardware message. Click OK to continue. Note: IR-CB controller (for 42 or larger size) requires an external power supply (included) while IR-CA controller gets power directly from USB port. 7.5 When prompted for restart the Windows, click OK to reboot After Windows is rebooted, two new icons are created on desktop. Touch USB Swap Button At this point, the red LED on the controller should be on and IR screen should respond to touch, but the position of touch is not accurate until the screen is calibrated. If the IR screen is not responding to touch, unplug and replug in the USB cable to reinitiate the controller Double click Touch USB icon to open touch control panel. Set the password for uninstallation, or keep the Default password, which is magictouch Click the calibration button, choose either 5 or 25 point calibration then click GO! Touch the center of each Circle to complete the calibration Repeat the calibration if necessary. Click OK to close the window Vista embedded tablet driver installation: Plug the USB controller into a port on your computer, then Windows will detect it automatically. Windows will install the driver quickly and without input from you After the driver is installed, the touch screen should react to your touch though not accurately yet. You might also see a scratchpad gadget appear in the Windows sidebar, and a faded image of a mouse should appear near your mouse cursor. There are other utilities available as well, refer to your Vista documentation for further information Windows has a built-in calibration program for touch screens, but unfortunately we cannot run it directly out of the Control Panel. To calibrate the screen, follow the instructions below: - Go to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories and click on Windows Explorer. - In the left window panel, scroll down and click on Computer. Folders and files should appear in the right window panel. - In the right panel, scroll down and double-click on Windows. - In the right panel, scroll down and double-click on System32. - In the right panel, scroll way down and right-click on tabcal. (might show tabcal.exe) - From right-click menu, select Create Shortcut. - Windows will display a message saying that a shortcut cannot be placed there, and will ask whether

8 Windows can place the shortcut on the desktop. Select yes. - Close Windows Explorer. - On your desktop, locate tabcal.exe and right-click on it. - On the right-click menu, select Properties. - In the Properties window, there will be a property called Target with a box after it with the words C:\Windows\System32\tabcal.exe written in it. - Click in the box and put your cursor at the end of the text (after tabcal.exe). Make sure that the words are not highlighted. - Push the space bar on your keyboard once to put a space after tabcal.exe. - After the space, type NoValidate. Make sure that the N and the V are capitalized, and that there is no space between No and Validate. Whenever you want to calibrate, you can click on the tabcal shortcut on the desktop to launch the calibration utility. 8. Touch Screen Functions: 8.1. Screen touched = left mouse button clicked 8.2. Touch down and drag = left mouse button held down and dragged 8.3. Tap twice = left mouse button double clicked 8.4. Swap Button: Select once to right-click for one touch, or always to always right-click. Select minimize to reduce to system tray. Click in tray as a shortcut! 9. Settings and Options: 9.1. Mouse speed: Control the tracking speed of mouse cursor Double click speed: Control the time interval between two clicks to activate a double click. Slow speed makes double click easier. Test the double click by tapping the K logo twice. If successful, the logo rotates Lift Off: When this option is enabled, the click is activated when touch is lifted away from the touch screen. This mode is very useful for clicking hyperlinks, such as Internet browser, or programs that use mouse-over function. However, it is impossible to drag or draw in this mode Beep: Enable/disable an audio beep when touching the touch screen Move only: Touching and dragging only moves the mouse cursor without performing a click. This option is for those who have an optional click pen (currently unavailable) Hide cursor: Makes the cursor invisible (preferred for some applications) Uninstall: Click to uninstall the driver. Correct password needed (magictouch is the default password) Default setting: Return the speeds and options to the original settings. 10. Troubleshooting and Technical Support: Make sure the driver was installed first before the USB controller is plugged into a USB port Make sure the power supply is plugged into IRC-B controller Make sure the controller always plugged into the same USB port Make sure the sensors are leveled, and the corners are right angled.
