2 2 T E A C H I N G H I S T O R Y S K I D H E R O E S Lesson 1 Story Problem Students will demonstrate reading comprehension by identifying an important problem in a story and describing its solution. Materials History s Kid Heroes series Story Problem Planning Sheet p. 5 pencil lined paper Prepare Copy Story Problem Planning Sheet p. 5 for each student. Pretest Tell students that they are going to read a story about a person with a problem. Discuss other stories the class has read that have problems in them. Remind students that as they read, they need to find the most important problem in the story. They will be writing about it when they are finished reading. Each student will read one book from the History s Kid Heroes series. Model Use a story familiar to the class to demonstrate how to do the activity. Using Story Problem Planning Sheet p. 5, encourage the class to help you identify the most important problem in the familiar story, and tell how the problem was solved. Show students how to take the information from Story Problem Planning Sheet p. 5 and write about it. Practice Students determine the most important problem in their History s Kid Heroes book, why it is important, and how it was solved. Students should record their ideas on Story Problem Planning Sheet p. 5. On a piece of lined paper, students should write about the problem and how it was solved. Encourage students to imagine they are explaining the story to someone who has not read it. Discuss Have students read their story problem to a partner. Encourage partners to give compliments and suggestions to make the writing complete. Evaluate Evaluate Story Problem Planning Sheet p. 5 and the students writing for completeness and understanding. Extension Use the above activity for creative writing. Have students plan and write about a problem in their own lives.

Materials History s Kid Heroes series butcher paper pencil index cards lined paper crayons or markers scissors glue Character Trait Self- Evaluation p. 6 Prepare Copy Character Trait Self- Evaluation p. 6 for each student. Pretest What are character traits? Discuss personality traits and physical traits. Can you tell what kind of person someone is by something he or she says or does? Ask for examples. Tell students that they are going to be creating character trait posters. As they read their books from the History s Kid Heroes series, students should look for words, quotes, or actions that describe the main character s traits. Each student will read one book from the History s Kid Heroes series. On a piece of lined paper, students should record words, quotes, and actions that describe the main character. Model Demonstrate how to make a character trait poster. Place a large piece of butcher paper on the floor, and ask a student volunteer to lie on it. Trace the student s body. Cut out the body tracing. Tell students that they are to decorate the body to look like the main character in their book. Share Character Trait Self- Evaluation p. 6 with the class. Practice Assign students to groups of three or four. All students in the same group should have read the same book. As a group, students create one poster of the main character from their book. On index cards, students write the character trait words, quotes, and actions they collected. Students should glue these to the poster. Discuss Student groups introduce their character to the class. Groups should discuss the words and quotes that they used on their poster. Evaluate Have students complete Character Trait Self-Evaluation p. 6.

As a class, read one book from the History s Kid Heroes series. Model As a class, create an outline of the plot using Outline p. 7 on the board, an overhead, or an interactive whiteboard. Talk about how an outline is a plan for the text and a storyboard is a plan for the art. Practice Have students complete an outline for their own original stories using Outline p. 7. Then have students plan the art for their stories using Storyboard p. 8. Evaluate Together with each student, review Outline p. 7 and Storyboard p. 8 for completion and understanding. Have students use their outline and storyboard to create their own graphic novel. Lesson 4 Fractured Stories Students will learn about telling a story from a different perspective. Materials History s Kid Heroes series Outline p. 7 Storyboard p. 8 paper pencils Prepare Copy Outline p. 7 and Storyboard p. 8 for each student. As a class, read one book from the History s Kid Heroes series. Discuss Discuss the perspective of the story. Who is the main character? What role does this person play in the story line? Who are the secondary characters? How do they feel about the events in the story? Model Ask students to think about the story from a different character s perspective. Tell them that they will be reading a story and rewriting it from a different character s perspective. Each student will read one book from the History s Kid Heroes series. Practice Using Outline p. 7, have students complete an outline to retell the story they read from a different character s perspective. Then have students plan the art for their stories using Storyboard p. 8. Have students use their outline and storyboard to create their own graphic novel. Evaluate stories or have students share stories with the class. Assess for understanding.
