Lately, light fixtures are not only used as setting up a mood, but are also emerging as art forms for display. The latest trend is using lighting as a sculpture for the home, truly making it a focal point, similar to art. Design inspirations for these types of fixtures come from sculptures and other artwork. An elaborate light fixture can be the focal point, whether it s hung over the dining room table, kitchen buffet, or in the foyer. Chandeliers and pendants have gone mainstream and can be found all over the house. If the style of the interiors is hard to categorize, a lighting fixture with mixed materials glass, crystal, metal, and wrought-iron may be the decorating solution practiced now. This mix of metals, crystals, colors, and finishes in light fixtures helps bring a room to life in new and unexpected ways. Advances in technology have led to the emergence of home automation. A balanced lighting plan has fixtures placed at different levels in the room and in at least three locations. Bedroom lighting can be subtler than lighting plans for other rooms in the house. This is a room for relaxing and sleeping, so keep the ambient lighting gentle. Instead of the usual ceiling light, supply ambient light in the bedroom with a chandelier and wire it to a dimmer switch so you can control the light level. A candlestick lamp on the dresser banishes shadows in a corner, while a floor lamp sheds brighter task lighting on the dressing table. Sconces beside the mirror cast gentle ambient light, while the bedside lamp offers focused light for reading. LED strip lights, recessed lights, ceiling and wall fixtures are all popular options for bathrooms. Strip lights when placed above or alongside your bathroom mirror will significantly reduce shadows, helping you shave or apply makeup. Make use of bright bathroom lamps and bulbs that illuminate your restroom properly. You could use a pair of sconces flanking the mirror. In a large bathroom, having a light directly over the shower is a great idea. For general or task lighting, particularly above the shower or commode, recessed or overhead fixtures are best. Depending on the light bulb and wattage, they can provide a soft glow or bright light. A wall light, such as a bracket or sconce, is ideal for accenting and complementing overhead lights. They add a decorative flair to the bathroom and can be installed beside mirrors to reduce shadows. If you have cupboards over bench tops in the kitchen, then concealed LED strip lights to dispel any lingering shadows are the best. During the day, a large ceiling or pendant light perhaps a set of three over the island bench for a contemporary look. In the dining room, a series of pendant lights over the dining table creates a pool of

6 light that is warm and intimate. An elegant crystal chandelier works well for a formal look. Use dimmers to turn down the wattage once the serving is complete. For a romantic dinner, dim the lights and bring out the candles to reflect the right ambience. Walkways, sidewalks, perimeter of your home, and the front entry should have ambient lighting. Harsh or excessive bright lighting can upset the ambience and create patches of brightly lit spots with some areas completely in the shadows. Floodlights in strategic corners of the façade are a good option as they enable uniform lighting. Candles and torches are perfect when you want a more natural set up and do not want to use electricity. Lighting options for the gardens and landscape can range from lanterns and recessed lighting to wall sconces which leave the exterior walls awash with light to create a cosy yet imposing ambience during the evening hours. Directional sconces pointing upwards or downwards can focus on architectural elements and draw attention to niches. Decorative lighting should make a statement which can be by way of attractive accessories. The chandeliers and lamps are being subtly overshadowed by wall sconces and hanging lights which looks elite and exclusive. All indoor lights are now replacing white lights with shades of yellow and warm colours. The white lights can work for commercial spaces and office interiors and even outdoor but not important areas in a home. CFLs and LEDs may be cost effective but they do not look good and formal.
