2 WETLANDS White Faced Heron A grey heron with a white face. Little Shag Small stubby bird with long tail. Black back. Face, neck and breast can be black or white. Kingfisher Large bill, short legs. Bright blue wings and black, pale breast. Shoveler Similar to female mallard but has large flattened bill, Male can be very colourful. Grey Duck Similar to mallard female but has more definite eye stripe and green wing patches. Sexes similar. Grey Teal Smaller than grey duck with paler face. Mallard Duck Common duck, males have green heads. Females are mottled brown, similar to grey duck. Both have blue wing patches. Paradise Duck Large duck, females have white heads and brown bodies, males are black.

3 WETLANDS Welcome Swallow Small and streamlined. Long, pointed wings and forked tail. Fast flight. Black Swan A large black bird with a long neck and red bill. Canada Goose A large brown bird with a long black neck. White face patch. Scaup A Very small black duck. Males have yellow eyes. Black Shag Black plumage with yellow throat. Stoat bill with large hook. Pukeko Red bill, legs and frontal shield. Purple/blue and black colouring.

4 OPEN COUNTRY Yellow Hammer Brown body with chestnut rump. Yellow head and underparts. Harrier White upper tail feathers contrast with dark back when flying. Long legs. Large hawk, light or dark brown plumage. Gliding flight. Sparrow Male has black breast patch and chestnut back. Female mottled brown with pale eye-stripe. Redpoll Mainly brown with red cap on head and pink breast. Greenfinch Mainly green with bright yellow on wings and tail. Californian Qual Small grey/blue game bird. Male has crest on crown and black face. Female browner with smaller crest and no black face. Pheasant Long tail. Male very colourful. Female is mottled brown. Chaffinch white shoulder patch and wing bar. Male has pink breast.

5 OPEN COUNTRY Cockatoo Large, white parrot yellow head crest. Magpie A medium sized bird distinguished by its striking black and white plumage. Starling Black plumage with greenpurple sheen and iridescent colours. Spur-winged Plover Brown back with white below. Black head and shoulders. Yellow bill and wattles. Red legs. Spur on wing. Goldfinch Bar of bright yellow on upper wing and bright red face with black crown. White on side of head and neck. Black-backed Gull Large white and black bird with yellow beak.

6 BUSH Bellbird Arched bill and shallow fork in tail. Olive green plumage. Eastern rosella Very colourful parrot. White cheek patches and red head. Silvereye Distinctive white ring around eye. Plumage green above. Song thrush Brown upper surface. Spotted breast and white belly. Shining Cuckoo Small bird, upper surface shining metallic green with bronze tones. Tui Distinctive white neck frill and throat tuft. Black plumage. Grey warbler Small bird with grey/green plumage with white belly. Red eye. Loud song.

7 BUSH NZ Pigeon Large white breast coppery green head and neck. Red bill. NZ falcon Dark plumage, smaller than harrier. Pointed wings. Morepork Dark brown, mottled plumage. Large eyes. Fantail Distinctive fan-like tail. White and black head markings. Very erratic flight. Blackbird Male black all over, orange bill. Female and young are mottled brown.

8 NGA MANU NATURE RSERVE We provide a haven for birds of all species. Along with the birds that arrive here naturally to visit or reside, the reserve has numerous aviaries, which contain native birds. Some of these birds are injured and the aviaries provide protection and easy access to birds, which could not survive in the wild. Many of the native birds held at the Reserve are being kept as part of captive breeding programmes, in the hope that one day those birds bred in captivity may be released to re-established natural populations. Remember... By walking quietly, pausing often and observing carefully as you explore the Reserve, you will be rewarded by seeing and hearing a variety of bird species.
