1 HEALTH IS THE NEW WEALTH MIND BODY SOUL
2 OVERVIEW The NAACP DC Branch is implementing a 12-month Health Program to empower African-American women to adopt healthy lifestyles through gardening, cooking, healthy eating and physical activity. This Health Program will include monthly nutrition educational activities, fitness programs and online health coaching from May 2016 through May Chronic diseases and diet-related illnesses disproportionately impact low-income African- American residents in the District of Columbia. This Health Program will educate, empower and motivate participants to eat well-balanced nutritious meals and exercise regularly to meet individual health and fitness goals. We have partnered with personal trainers, nutritionists, health coaches, and various health care professionals to offer exercise sessions and health coaching to achieve health and wellness. The DC Branch will advocate to address health disparities facing resident is all 8 Wards of the District of Columbia. The DC Branch will host our program activities in churches, parks, schools, libraries, colleges and community centers throughout all 8 wards in Washington, DC. In partnership, Tambra Raye Stevenson Health Chair AkosuaAli President
3 BACKGROUND Chronic diseases and diet-related illnesses disproportionately impact residents in Washington, DC. Washington, DC. has a large African-American resident population, including 51% of its total population reported as African American in In 2010, African Americans had higher rates of diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease compared to rates among white Americans. In 2013, 36.4% of African Americans were reported as obese, compared to 9.8% of the white population. Diet related illnesses and chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease are intrinsically related to an individual s diet. The major barriers impacting healthy eating, physical activity and combating chronic diseases in the District of Columbia include economic security and food accessibility for many African-American residents in Washington, DC. Poverty and low accessibility to affordable healthy foods contribute to increased obesity, diet related illness and chronic diseases among African-Americans in Washington, DC. OUR FOCUS The NAACP DC Branch 2016 Health Program recruitment efforts will target African- American women residing in all 8 Wards in the District of Columbia. Chronic diseases and diet-related illnesses disproportionately impact low-income African-American residents in the District of Columbia. This program will be open to all residents in District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia, regardless of race, creed, color, national origin, religion, age, sex, political affiliation, sexual orientation, marital status or handicapped condition. However, this program will target low-income African-American women residing in socioeconomic disadvantaged communities in the District of Columbia. WOMEN
