Where Science is Building More Profitable Cattle. Lee Leachman, Manager Leachman Cattle of Colorado Wellington, CO A little about Leachman Lee joined the Horton family in 03. Horton s are in all sectors of the cattle industry cow/calf, feedlot, and now seedstock. Built the Wellington center to test feed additives and pharmaceutical products. Ran a sire progeny test in the 90 s to evaluate genetic profitability -- showed $100 difference in profit per head between sires. Troy, Trent, Travis & Dallas Horton Horton Test Center, Wellington, CO 2 1
Our bulls are put to test in a Real World environment. Extensive Wyoming range operation. We test our product under real-world conditions. Run Stabilizer composite bulls with our 1 4 year old females. Terminal cross our mature cows with Black Simmentals & Charolais bulls. Split Rock Ranch, Muddy Gap, WY 3 We are in the bull business! Select Angus, Red Angus, and Stabilizer for maternal traits that maximize cow/calf profitability. Produce our bulls through a network of 12 cooperators (5,000 cows) and a large pool of donors (implant over 1,000 embryos per year). Heavy selection pressure that culls 50% of the male calves at weaning. Over 1,100 bulls are on test at Wellington, CO. Since 2004, marketed over 1,900 bulls. Angus Red Angus Stabilizer 4 2
We are starting in the terminal bull business! New in Terminal Cross Charolais Bulls. Selected for calving ease, weaning weight, and carcass merit. Our Charolais bulls are terminal specialists! Doc Silver -4.2 BW, 59 YW,.17 REA,.28 Marb Top 1%, Top 9%, Top 50%, Top 2% 5 What is the right sized cow? Most cattlemen agree that cow size has increased and that today s cows are big enough or too big. Think about the bulls that sired your cowherd? They were born in 1997! Over eight years ago. They had a yearling EPD of +52. Today, average is +70. We stopped YW selection in Our goal is +80 YW with below average frame and mature weight. What will a +90 or +100 YEPD bull do to your cows? His dam weighs over 1500 pounds! What is the cost of bigger cows? 6 3
Costs of increased cow size. What is the difference in cost to maintain a 1400 lb. cow vs. an 1150 lb. cow? Increase in cow size of 20%. Cow feed cost per year ($225 / yr, 5% on land cost, plus hay, property tax, etc.). $36 for Cow Feed. Run 116 small cows or 100 big cows on the same land and feed! 7 8 Cow Size Math 1150 lb. cows 1400 lb. cows Number of cows % weaned per cow exposed 93% 88% Wean wt as % of cow weight 46% 43% Weaning wt at eight months Price per cwt $ $ calculations: (116 x 93% x 525) (100 x 88% x 600) Total weaning wt. 56,637 52,800 Total calf revenue $70,796 $62,040 Income from cull cows (10%) $6,670 $7,000 $77,466 $69,040 Profit advantage (assumes same land & feed) $8,426 Profit per cow per year $72.63 Smaller females create more profit. 4
How do you make right sized cows? Buy bulls that make the right sized cows. Ideal: +75 YEPD, 5.7 Frame = 1250 lb. mature cows. Yellow lights: YWEPD > 85, Frame > Buy from a breeder that measures cow size. We predict the mature weight of the daughters on every bull we sell. Just Right: Pounds Mature (5.5 BS) He ll build right sized replacements. 9 Crossbreeding adds $100 per cow per year to your bottom line. Crossbred cows wean 23% more pounds weaned per cow exposed. They win as 2 s, 3 s, and aged cows. More weaning weight. Better body condition and rebreeding. Longer life three years longer on average. Net is 50% more calves over their lifetime. Reduce your cost with fewer cull cows. Build Crossbred Cows! Crossbreed with an LCoC Stabilizer yearling bull. 10 5
What s the best way to crossbreed? Rotational crossbreeding with purebred bulls does not work! Too complicated. Too much variation. Red & Black Angus cows are the best straight bred option commercially if you are not crossbreeding. Still give up 23% pounds weaned per cow exposed. Especially in harsh environments or at high altitude. Solution: Use a composite with British & Continental Use anything between 50% British / 50% Continental and 75% British / 25% Continental A Stabilizer 2yr old, 50% British and 50% Continental. 11 Can you crossbreed and keep uniformity? A Leachman Stabilizer cow herd. Every animal pictured contains 4 to 6 different breeds. Yes, with Stabilizer composites. 12 6
The Advantage of Stabilizers Stabilizer composites are proven to work. They are a British / Continental blend of AN, HH, SM, and GV. Original design at Clay Center Marc II. Selection for uniform phenotype, moderate size, and carcass excellence. Selecting and breeding for over 15 years. Sold over 7,500 ST bulls. Stabilizer bulls and females for profitable crossbreeding. 13 The Advantage of Terminal X Leachman terminal bulls: Calving ease, weaning weight, and carcass merit. Charolais bulls for white color marking or Simmental bulls for uniform red or black color. Stacking each breed s best sires to ensure genetic superiority. Allow use of smaller cows to maximize fertility. Big & Rich (CH) Dream On (SM) 14 7
Profitable EPD s What is the most important trait? Profit! Most EPD s measure output, but not cost. Income does not equal profit. More and more EPD s will be expressed in dollar terms some will measure profit. We calculate $Profit. 15 How do you measure profit? Let s study the genetic traits that drive profitability: Profit = Income - Expense Income: sale weight, carcass merit, & percent weaned. Expense: feed costs on the ranch, feed costs in the feedlot, and replacement costs. The Leachman kind: moderate size, heavy muscled, & high marbling. 16 8
Leachman $Profit EPD $Profit is a standardized index base on our comprehensive data. Assumes the bull produces 100 calves in his life out of Angus x cows. Assumes you will keep 30% of the heifer calves. Assumes that you will retain ownership and sell on a grid marketing system. Also allow you to customize the index for your operation. 17 Leachman customers study their $Profit EPD. Leachman $Profit EPD Let s compare two bulls: Innovation: low birth (-.5) good growth (+78 YW) moderate size (-0.1 YH, -2 Mat Wt) easy keeping dghtrs (+0.63 $EN) great carcass (.50 IMF,.77 REA) New Standard: very low birth (-1.5) very high growth (+115 YW) larger size (+0.4 YH, +47 Mat Wt) higher input dghtrs (-9.63 $EN) good carcass (.22 IMF,.68 REA) Which bull makes more money? Innovation New Standard 18 9
Leachman $Profit EPD How do they compare: Average 2005 born, registered Angus bull has a $Profit EPD of $4,500. Innovation: $11,390 New Standard: $8,998 Difference: $2,392 This works out to $23.92 per head on 100 calves. Our average bull will earn over $2000 more than the average Angus bull. Innovation New Standard 19 Leachman sired calves earn premiums! Over 10,000 Leachman sired calves sold on Superior between May and Aug of Average premium earned per cwt was $2.14 or $13.74 per head. Leachman genetics have an industry wide reputation
Leachman Bulls Deliver Value In 2005, over 80% of Leachman bulls sold for $3,000 or less. The Leachman kind: moderate sized, heavy muscled, & high marbling. 21 Six reasons to consider buying a Leachman bull: 1. Our maternal specialists build right sized cows. 2. Our Stabilizers keep Angus type, color, & kind with heterosis. 3. Our breed leading EPD s rank in the Lowest 25% on BW, Lowest 30% on Mature Weight, Top 25% on IMF, & Top 20% on REA. 4. Our $Profit EPD combines all EPD s into one bottom line number to simplify bull comparisons. 5. Our reputation genetics ensure that your calves earn top dollar. 6. Our affordable bulls are offered in volume, year round
