1 CANADIAN HOLISTIC MANAGEMENT NEWS & VIEWS STATEMENT OF PURPOSE: to provide knowledge, motivation & net working opportunities for Holistic Managers HEALTHY PEOPLE, HEALTHY LAND, HEALTHY PROFITS Sept Marketing or Selling? We are all aware that the cattle market is strong, stronger than it has been for a long time. If my memory is correct yearling prices have been at record highs this fall. There are signs that the calf market will follow a similar trend. This is a most welcome trend. Prices need to be strong as we are all well aware that costs are high & are likely to continue higher. Let me describe how I see marketing & selling. Marketing is selling at a profit. Marketing requires you to have a good handle on your finances. You know your costs & what price it will take to make you profitable. All of us who have taken Holistic Management will have the skills & knowledge to figure this out. Do you use your skills & knowledge so you are in a position of knowledge & strength? You also need to know the quality of your cattle. When you combine this knowledge with a reasonable knowledge of the current market you are in a position to market your cattle.
2 There are many ways to market: stockyards, electronic sales, contract, private treaty etc. Which one is best is a personal decision. It appears to me that today s market is more subject to fluctuations than in the past. While marketing has always been important it appears to be even more important today. At the time of marketing your costs are set. Every dollar you make by marketing is 100% profit. Contracting cattle seems to be more common & easier to do. This can be done in several different ways. You can contract on the Chicago board of trade, directly to a feedlot or buyer or on the electronic sales. One of the advantages of contracting is that you can monitor the cattle price over several weeks or months. You price your cattle when it suits you. You eliminate the risk of selling on a given day. On any given day the market may be up or down, no one knows. Can you afford to take this risk? Marketing is selling at a profit. It may not be the highest price of the fall but it is one that will make you profitable & keep you in business. Fear & greed are the 2 main forces driving our marketing decisions. It takes knowledge, confidence & courage to say: I know my costs, I have some understanding of the market and I am satisfied with this price because I know it means this level of profit. I am reminded of a saying of a friend of mine: you never go broke making a profit. Selling: In my mind this implies selling with little or no knowledge of costs, profit or the market of the day. You sell on a given day & take what you get. You may be motivated by a payment being due, because we always sell now etc. You basically sell your cattle on a given day. You are aware that you got more or less than last year, more
3 or less than last week, more or less than your neighbor but you have no idea of how the price & the profit are linked. I think that there are too many cattle sold as opposed to marketed. I think that most of us in H M tend to market our cattle. I encourage you to do a better job of this. I think you will like the results. A Cute Story I recently had a phone call from a Holistic Management producer in central Alberta. He said, It s really dry here, all my neighbor s pastures are brown. They are out of grass & will soon have to feed. I go & look at my pastures, they are lush & green. They are still re- growing. I don t know what to do so I am depressed! I hope we have all experienced similar things. Remember: Holistic Management WORKS MANAGEMENT PAYS!!!!! The following is from Blain Hjertaas. Blain has a daughter Kathleen working in India. She sent this message to Blain. Thanks Blain. The Paradox of Our Age We have bigger houses but smaller families; more conveniences, but less time; We have more degrees, but less sense; more knowledge, but less judgment; more experts, but more problems; more medicines; but less healthiness;
4 We ve been all the way to the moon & back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet the new neighbor, We build more computers to hold more information to produce more copies than ever, but have less communication; We have become long on quantity, but short on quality. These are the times of fast foods, but slow digestion; Tall men but short character; Steep profits but shallow relationships, It s a time when there is much in the window but nothing in the room. His Holiness the X1Vth Dalai Lama 2014 H M Conference Lloydminster Mon. Feb. 10 th, Tues. Feb. 11 th. Great news: Jim Reger will be our key note speaker. Jim is an author & motivational speaker. Jim has worked closely with David Irvine; together they have published several books. Jim is: committed to assisting individuals & organizations increase their effectiveness. Mark your calendar now. Jim will have a great message that will inspire us all. Hearing Jim will be worth more than the cost of the conference. Make plans to attend.
