1 PROGRAMMES IN A BOX BEAVER BADGE EVENING (2 OF 2) Take your Explorer Scouts back to their youth with these activities which could easily be split over two or three weeks. For those who didn t attend Beaver Scouts when they were younger it can be a chance to catch up on badges they missed out on. Why not also ask the Explorers to find a bright blue jumper or top to tape their badges to as they achieve them. You could also combine this with a trip to the swimming pool to reach Swimmer Stage 1. Before the evening, produce some badges which Explorer Scouts can be awarded and stick straight onto their bright blue jumper they have brought with them to wear award them at the end of each activity, which can be run with the whole unit at once, or as a carousel of activities which small groups move round. This week will require some preparation ask Explorer Scouts who have an interesting or unusual hobby to bring in anything they can which will allow them to demonstrate it to other members of the Unit. Time Activity Notes Who 5 Welcome & Opening Ceremony Start the evening and explain to them what they will be doing that evening. 10 Game: Fruit Salad - Ask the Explorer Scouts to sit in the circle of chairs (there should be one less chair than the total number of players). - Going around the circle, each child is given the name of one of three fruits, e.g., apple, pear, banana, apple, pear, banana, until everyone has a fruit name that they need to remember. - Start with one person standing in the centre of the circle and calling out the name of one fruit. Everyone who is that fruit (e.g., all the 'apples') must get up and quickly move to an empty chair, including the person who was in the middle. Those who are not 'apples' remain seated. - Whoever ends up without a chair then takes a turn in the middle, calling out the name of one group of fruit again. - To get everyone to move all at once, the person in the middle calls out 'fruit salad.' - Once they understand the game, speed up the time between claiming chars and the next person calling out. 15 Unit Activity: Beaver Scout Faith Activity Badge Write a Prayer - Ask the Explorer Scouts to think what should be included in a prayer / Scouts Own. To add a technological twist, get the to write it in text speak, or as a Tweet (maximum 140 characters). - Read these out at the end of the evening. Talk About Their Faith - Ask the Explorer Scouts to discuss their faith, or thoughts on faith do they practise their faith regularly, do they know someone who has a different faith to themselves How do they practise? 15 Unit Activity: Beaver Scout Health & Fitness Activity Badge Find Out About A Sport / Activity - Discuss what sports / physical activities members of the Unit take part in, particularly those who takes part in a more unusual activity. Plan a Healthy Meal - Using food magazines (which can usually be obtained free from major supermarkets), Explorer Scout should cut out pictures and create their favourite healthy meal Don t forget drinks, side dishes and something for afters! Equipment: A4 adhesive labels (or plain paper and sellotape) Resources: Beaver Badges Equipment: Chairs Equipment: Pens, paper. 2 PROGRAMMES IN A BOX BEAVER BADGE EVENING (2 OF 2) 15 Unit Activity: Beaver Scout Healthy Eating Friend Activity Badge Make a Fruit Salad - Prepare the fruit using the knives / peelers and put all chopped / sliced pieces of fruit into a large bowl. - Scoop evenly into small disposable bowls / cups and enjoy! Make a Smoothie - Taking ideas from the Smoothie Recipes sheet, let the Explorer Scouts create their own healthy smoothies but remind them that they have to drink whatever they make! 15 Unit Activity: Beaver Scout Hobbies Activity Badge - Allow each Explorer Scout in turn to talk about their hobby if possible, get them to run a taster session so others can try it out, hold the equipment etc. Equipment: Fruit, fruit juice, knives, peelers, large bowl, small disposable bowls / cups, blender. Ingredients: As required see Smoothie Recipes sheet for ideas. Resource: Smoothie Recipes Equipment: This will be supplied by the Explorer Scouts themselves 15 Unit Activity: Beaver Scout Safety Activity Badge Green Cross Code - Get the Explorer Scouts to explain the Green Cross code. - Practise crossing an imaginary road (don t forget to check both ways and holds hands!) Dangers in the Meeting Place - Ask the Explorers what dangers there might be in the meeting place, and what can be done to make sure they don t injure themselves whilst at Explorer Scouts. 15 Unit Activity: Beaver Scout Imagination Activity Badge Create a Super Hero - In pairs, Explorer Scouts create a super hero character. - They must decide what kind of outfit (s)he will wear, what super powers they will have, their name - Ask them to write down up to three sup- powers their hero will have on the sheet and label (eg point to the eyes for X-ray vision). Equipment: Coloured pens etc Resources: My Super Hero 10 Game: Super Heroes - Explorer Scouts spread themselves around the meeting place and start moving in and out of each other. - The leader calls out one of the super heroes below, Explorer Scouts respond by acting as if they are that super hero: Superman - Action: Beavers pretend to fly about the games area in classic Superman pose, with one arm outstretched. Spiderman - Action: Beavers move around the games area on fingertips and tiptoes, scurrying like a spider. Batman - Action: Beavers run around the games area with arms outstretched like batwings. The Hulk - Action: Beavers stand and flex their muscles, while making an angry roar. Wonderwoman - Action: Beavers spin slowly with arms outstretched. Lara Croft - Action: Beavers run, jump and crouch on one knee. Elastica Incredible - Action: Beavers stand still and stretch arms and legs as far as they can reach. Scooby Doo - Action: Beavers huddle together in twos / threes saying "I'm scared Shaggy" 5 Closing Ceremony Wrap up the evening, give out any notices for next week etc. Notices: Give out any notices for the coming weeks. 3 My Healthy Meal

4 Smoothie Recipes Strawberry & Banana Get some strawberries, one ripe banana, and blend into a paste. Add the juice of one orange and some ice. Pour into glasses and serve with a straw and bits of strawberry to decorate if you're feeling fancy. Apple & Strawberry Take about 10 fresh strawberries, and a large glass of cloudy apple juice. Combine in a blender and mix up until very slushy. Pour into chilled glasses and serve with a strawberry garnish. Pink Banana Take one large banana, one handful of strawberries or raspberries - they can be fresh, frozen or tinned. Add a large glass of apple juice. Squashed Peach Take 3 or 4 ripe peaches, skinned and stoned or 1 tin of peaches in fruit juice. Add the juice of one lemon, one glass of orange juice, and a small tin of pineapple chunks. Mix all together and blend until smooth and creamy. Chill and serve. Slurpy Pineapple Take half a fresh pineapple (or 1 small one), or 1 large tin of pineapple in juice. Add 1 ripe banana and some coconut milk or ¼ teaspoon of coconut extract. Mix all together and blend until super sumo smooth. Garnish with pineapple wedge Recipes Taken from:
