Cabin balconies on passenger ships constructed before 1 July 2008 shall comply with the requirements of this paragraph by the first survey after 1 July Furniture and furnishings on cabin balconies of passenger ships On passenger ships, furniture and furnishings on cabin balconies shall comply with regulations , , , and unless such balconies are protected by a fixed pressure water-spraying and fixed fire detection and fire alarm systems complying with regulations 7.10 and Passenger ships constructed before 1 July 2008 shall comply with the requirements of this paragraph by the first survey after 1 July 2008.

Regulatory Update Regulation 6 Smoke generation potential and toxicity 2.2 On passenger ships constructed on or after 1 July 2008, paints, varnishes and other finishes used on exposed surfaces of cabin balconies, excluding natural hard wood decking systems, shall not be capable of producing excessive quantities of smoke and toxic products, this being determined in accordance with the Fire Test Procedures Code. 3.2 On passenger ships constructed on or after 1 July 2008, primary deck coverings on cabin balconies shall not give rise to smoke, toxic or explosive hazards at elevated temperatures, this being determined in accordance with the Fire Test Procedures Code. Regulation 7 Detection and alarm 10 Protection of cabin balconies on passenger ships A fixed fire detection and fire alarm system complying with the provisions of the Fire Safety Systems Code shall be installed on cabin balconies of ships to which regulation applies, when furniture and furnishings on such balconies are not as defined in regulations , , , and

ECSTASY = SUCCESSFUL BALANCE SOLAS Ch II-2 Structural Fire Protection Requirements of SOLAS Ch.II-2 division of ship into main vertical zones by thermal and structural boundaries Fire risk categorization of spaces restricted use of combustible materials protection of means of escape or access for fire fighting containment of any fire in the space of origin Fire Risk Categorization of Spaces and Division Construction

SHIP SUBDIVISION Ship divided longitudinally into MVZs L= 40m Area < 1600m2 MVZ aligned with WTB and separated by decks

Passive Protection FIRE RISK CATEGORIES Categories assigned based on space use (SOLAS II-2/26.2) [ ] Accommodation spaces II-2/3.10 [3.1] Service Space II-2/3.12 [3.45] Control Stations II-2/3.22 [3.18] Machinery Spaces II-2/3.20 [3.30] dual use = dual categorisation Fire Rated Bulkhead and Decks (Plan Approval) Insulation (to satisfy boundary requirements) Type Approved penetrations Penetrations Doors Draft Stops Ventilation Materials Classification Plan Approval and Product Type Approval TOTAL SYSTEM ONLY AS GOOD AS ITS WEAKEST PART

Survey of Arrangements Intent/Reasons why insulation is applied: Acoustic Thermal Fire Types of Insulation Mineral Wool Ceramic Glass Non-combustible Board A mm A-15 Deck (association) Comfort Main Vertical Zone Cabin Sliding Doors (side)

ELECTRICAL PENETRATIONS Intent of penetrations Survey of penetrations Completeness Integrity (both sides) Type Approval Certificate Declaration of Conformity Fire Safety integrity and where applicable e.g. below bulkhead deck also consider water tight integrity

VENTILATION Intent Construction/Insulation Ducts to be non combustible Generally not to exceed 2m in length with cross section not exceeding 0.02m2 Dampers Control & Indication Type Fire Smoke Shut-off CO2

Survey of Fire Screen Doors Intent Types Fire Rating depending on location e.g. A60, B15 Semi-watertight Fire and Watertight Survey Requirements Door positions indication at remote location Ability to open locally and remotely Damage

Materials Use of non combustible material or materials of a low fire risk or low flame spread characteristics. Materials should be approved for use in the intended space

DETECTION Intent Visually and audibly detect a fire in any zone of the ship reliably without mistaking for other environmental effects which are unrelated to fire. Type (Smoke, Heat, Flame) depending on location Smoke (responds to visible smoke from smoldering fire as well as smoke from fast burning fires) Flame UV or IR which is less effected by dirt/grease Heat (responds based on the rate of heat increase) System only intended to cover one deck and one zone with certain exceptions Humans are the best detectors (Fire patrols)

EXTINCTION (Portable) Intent: to have the ability to successfully extinguish a fire and prevent the re-igniting Items surveyed/verified Charged status Date charged Spares Stowage

EXTINCTION Non-portable) 45l foam or 25kg Powder 135l foam in Boiler Spaces Foam equipment w/ 20l spares

EXTINCTION Fire Main Pumps-redundancy (Typically 3) + topping up Ready availability of water pressurized main Hydrants 2 hydrants at top of ship (fore/aft) pressure = 0.4N/mm 2 (~ 12m throw) w/ 2 pumps International Shore Connections (II-2/19) [ ]

EXTINCTION CO 2 Protection of M/S of Cat. A High and Low Pressure 2 Means of Activation Pre-warning Alarm Pressure testing of manifold up to 190bar Activation Instructions Additional uses: Paint Lockers II-2/18.7 [10.6.3] Galley Grease Ducts II-2/32.9 [ ]

Control valves to be internally inspected at least once every five years.

EXTINCTION Sprinkler SOLAS II-2/12 [FSS Code] & 36 [7.5.3] Protection of: Accommodation Spaces Service Spaces Control Stations Prescriptive coverage of 5 litres/min/m2 Heads to be approved e.g. UL, LPC, FMC Window protection SOLAS II- 2/33.3 [ ]

FIREMAN S OUTFIT (SOLAS II-2/17 [10.10]) Fireman s Outfits Required Number Required = 2 + (2*L/80) + (2*MVZ) Personal Equipment Number Required = 2*L/80 Survey: Each unit complete and in good condition. Air compressors (if fitted) operating satisfactory. Smoke mask and air pump and hose tested Each Emergency Escape Breathing Device (EEBD) unit complete and stowed as per approved fire plan. Expire date & date of manufacture clearly marked on each EEBD.

Escape Philosophy Provide continuous fire shelter from all passenger and crew spaces to the embarkation decks utilising; corridors and stairway enclosures. Provide two means of escape from each space or group of spaces; primary means of escape secondary means of escape Above the bulkhead deck two means of escape from each vertical zone, one leading directly to a stairway forming a vertical escape. Below the bulkhead deck two means of escape from each watertight compartment, one being independent of the watertight doors. From machinery spaces two widely separated means of escape leading to the embarkation decks
