1 OpenGL Installation Guide/Project Setup CSCI 6360 Spring 2015 Welcome to CSCI In this course you ll be working on creating 2D and 3D computer graphics. In order to accomplish this you would be using OpenGL and Visual Studios. The following set of instructions will guide you in the installation of the needed components for creating computer graphics. 1) Visual Studios 2013 Professional/Express Installation 2) OpenGL, GLEW, and Freeglut 3) Installing the Dynamic-Link Libraries 4) Creating a Visual Studios Projects for OpenGL Projects 5) Adding a C++ Source File(.cpp) File to your Project Make sure to follow all the instruction. 2 Visual Studios 2013 Professional/Express Installation In this class you are going to use Visual Studio to develop all the assigned programming assignments. Visual Studio is an integrated development environment (IDE) developed by Microsoft. IDE s are software applications that provides tools for programmers to develop software. They also maximize a programmer s productivity. It is recommend that you download Visual Studio 2013 Professional/Express for this course. If you already have Visual Studios 2013 you can move on to the next section of this guide. 1. Go to 2. Sign in if you have a Microsoft account or create one.

3 3. Select Visual Studios 2013 Professional or Express 4. Click on download to download the program.

4 5. After that just follow the on screen instructions. The download may take a while depending on your internet connection.

5 OpenGL, GLEW, and Freeglut The Open Graphics Library (OpenGL) is a multiplatform API that is used for rendering vector graphics. OpenGL can interact with the graphics processing unit (GPU) in order to accelerate the rendering of graphics. In order to work with this API you are going to use GLEW and freeglut. The OpenGL Extension Wrangler Library (GLEW) is a cross-platform open-source extension loading library for C and C++. FreeGLUT is an open-source alternative to the OpenGL Utility Toolkit (GLUT) library which was abandoned in Like GLUT, freeglut is a utility toolkit. It allows programmers to create and manage windows that contain OpenGL contexts in many platforms. Also, freeglut allows you to read inputs from the mouse, keyboard, and a joystick. Your system should already contains OpenGL but you ll need to install GLEW and freeglut. 1. In blackboard there is a zip file that contains all the files for both GLEW and freeglut. On the left side click on OpenGL Programming module. 2. After that two items appear. Click on Setup Files to download the zip file.

6 3. The zip file will be automatically downloaded after the item is clicked. 4. The download zip file is called Computer Graphics.zip. The zip contains the needed header files and libraries to use OpenGL. Make sure you extract the content of your zip file. To do this just select the zip file in your file explorer. After that an Extract option appears at the top of the window. Click on the Extract option.

7 5. After that click on the Extract all option to extract the files. Now that you have the needed files you can go ahead and move on to the next sections where I ll explain how to install the dlls and the dependencies.

8 Installing the Dynamic-Link Libraries 1. Go to the file you previously extracted from Computer Graphics.zip. Inside that file there are two folders. Open the DLLs folder. In it there are two subfolders. 2. The folder For System32 contains the freeglut.dll that needs to be saved in the following directory: C:\Windows\System32. You can copy C:\Windows\System32 to the address bar of your file explorer if you can t find the directory. 3. The folder For SysWOW64 contains the freeglut.dll that needs to be saved in the following directory: C:\Windows\SysWOW64. Again, if you can t find the directory copy C:\Windows\SysWOW64 to the address bar.! Note: Both folders, For System32 and For SysWOW64, also contain another dll file called glew32.dll. Your computer should have the glew32.dll files in the directories mentioned above. Check to see if your system has them, if not save them following the same steps used above for the freeglut.dll.

9 Creating a Visual Studios Projects for OpenGL Projects As previously mentioned you are going to use Visual Studio 2013 for the programming assignments. Every time you want to create a new project in Visual Studio you must follow the following steps. 1. Open Visual Studios. Once opened click on File > New > Project 2. Select the Win32 Project option, give your project a name and select the location where you are going to save it. Click OK once you re finished.

10 3. When the Win32 Application Wizard appears click on Next. 4. After that select Console application under Application type: and check the Empty project and uncheck the Security Development Lifecycle checks options under Additional options:. 5. Then click on Finish.

11 6. We now need to add the dependencies to our project. Open file explorer and find your project s folder. 7. Open your project s folder.

12 8. Open the folder that has your project s name. Copy the Dependencies folder from the Computer Graphics zip file you previously downloaded and paste it in that destination. 9. Now we just need to link the libraries and the dependencies. Back in Visual Studios, in the solution explorer right click on your project s name and select Properties.

13 10. On the Configuration: drop down menu select All Configurations. 11. Under that you ll need to expand the Configuration Properties. Find Linker and expand it as well.

14 12. Click in General. On the right find Additional Library Directories. Click on the white space next to it. Click on the button that appear on the right. A drop down menu appears, click on <Edit >. 13. A new window appears, in here we ll link both the freeglut and the glew folders from the Dependencies folder. Click on the button to add a directory.

15 14. Then click on the button. 15. Find your project file and locate the Dependencies folder you previously added. 16. Open the folder, select the freeglut folder and then click on Select Folder at the bottom of the window. 17. Now repeat this same process to link the glew folder. Once the two directories have been added click OK.

16 18. Now we need to add the libraries. On the left under Linker click on Input. 19. On the right find Additional Dependencies. Click on the box next to it. Open the drop down menu, click on <Edit >.

17 20. Write the following library names into the textbox. 21. Then click OK. In the properties pages window click on Apply, then OK. The setup is now done, you can now start programming. In the next section I will instruction you on how to add a source file to your project.

18 Adding a C++ Source File (.cpp) File to your Project In order to begin adding code to your program you must first create your source file. The source file will contain the code (source code) that you will type. For the class programs we are just going to use a C++ file (.cpp). The following instruction will guide you through the process of creating a.cpp file. 1. In Visual Studios go to the Solution Explorer which is on the right side of the window. Right click on Source Files. 2. Click on Add > New Item

19 3. Click on Visual C++ and then on C++ File (.cpp). Next to name type a name for the.cpp source file. After you re done click Add at the bottom of the window. 4. That will create your C++ source file. Here is where you ll write your code.

20 5. After you ve written your code click on Build > Build Solution to build your code. In here Visual Studios will check your code for errors. 6. Fix any errors that where found. If your code had no errors then proceed to running your program. To do this click on Debug > Start Without Debugging. After that you work should be displayed.

21 There you go. Now you can start working on creating computer graphics. In order to make sure that you installed everything correctly you should test the sample programs that have been posted on the course s blackboard. The first program Red Square should display a red square. The second program 1, 2, 3 Teapot should display 2 solid white teapots and 1 wired teapot. The rendering of the two programs are shown below. If you are able to render this two graphics then you are good to go.
