This course is intended to introduce students with various social and welfare issues in the contemporary global world. Students will be able to understand and examine issues with social science perspectives and learn how to take actions. The course will cover issues from developed, developing and underdeveloped countries and different ways of intervention to such problems. Also lectures will introduce how international organizations, governments and NGOs work together to tackle various global social problems. 1

2 The course intends to encourage students to discuss on the issue to develop their critical thinking skills and to initiate to taking actions for changing the society. Therefore, an active participation of students is expected throughout the course. We will be using multiple course materials such as movie, video clips, news articles, statistics from official database, text books, etc. 2. Reading * International Social Work: Professional Action in an Interdependent World, Lynne M. Healy (2008), Oxford University Press (Chapter 4, 5 and Chapter 12). * Other course materials (media, news scraps, etc.) will be provided in the class. 3. Course requirements and Assignments and Participation: The success of this course is highly dependent on students participation. Students will have time to exchange their ideas and opinion at the end of each class. Also, students are asked to write a 300-words (at least) discussion on the discussion board on each topic. questions will be given. Movie watching and essays: There will be two essays in total for the students to think about the topic covered in more depth. Students are required to submit a short essay (around 1000 words) on the movie introduced in the class. Team project on taking actions: Later part of the course is composed with the presentation of team projects. Each team, composed with 2 people will select a social issue covered in the course and analyze on the issue/discuss on how to take action. Students can use the format of power points presentation, making of short video clip, starting up and campaign, etc. Creativity is very welcomed. Final Exam: There is one final exam in the course which covers course materials such as the text book, ppt slides, lecture notes, etc. 4. Grading (Total 100) 2

3 Class Attendance: 15 % (2 lates are equal one absence, and more than 5 absence is automatically F by University regulation). Absence can only be excused if students inform the lecturer before the absence with sound reasons. If the students cannot attend due to health problem, still he/she needs to inform the lecturer in advance and submit the proof document. : 15 % ( 2.5 points x 6 submission) -After in-class discussion and by each deadline, students are asked to write a 300- words (at least) discussion on the discussion board. There will be given discussion questions in the class and students will be given time to discuss. Students can write what has been discussed in the in-class discussion and/or write student s individual opinion on the topic/question. - See the weekly course schedule for submission date. - THERE WILL BE NO POINTS FOR LATE SUBMISSSION. Short essays (no more than 1000 words) : 15% x 2 = 30% -Instructions for essays: Following criteria will be reviewed for a well written essay (3 points for each, total 15 points) i) Good of the movie ii) Problems identified and discussed with wider perspective: analysis of the problem, provide other data/information, etc. iii) How to solve the problem? iv) Relate the social issue to your own settings. v) How logical is your argument? - Students should include students name, department, student number, word count, and the title of the essay (there will be point deduction for omission of the any 3

4 above) - All students are expected to first upload the essay on the assignment box on course cyber-campus site by given date, and bring the hard copy to class. - See the weekly course schedule for submission date. - LATE SUBMISSION(both on-line submission and hard copy) WILL NOT BE GRADED - THERE WILL BE NO PONTS in case plagiarism is found. Final Exam (there is no mid-term exam): 30% - The final exam will cover all lecture materials from the course. Project and presentation: 20%: - At the end of the class, students will be given 15 minutes (max) to present their work on team project of tacking actions. Along with the presentation, all materials prepared for the presentation (such as ppt slides, script, etc) are asked to be submitted. - Instruction for group presentation and grading (total 20 points) Answering each question; i) What do we know?
