3 Background At the dawn of the New Millenium 189 Members of the United Nations Signed the Millenium Declaration(MDGs) to guide development cooperation from 2000 to The Declaration gave forth 8 goals, 16 Targets and 48 Indicators. Since 2000 the world has witnessed the greatest reduction in poverty in modern history By 2010 UNSG was mandated by the 65th UNGA to begin deliberations on the next development agenda beyond 2015 In 2012 UNCSD (Rio +20) set out a mandate to establish an Open Working Group (OWG) on Post 2015 Agenda OWG Came up with 17 Sustainable Development Goals which were adopted by the UNGA on 25th September 2015 The SDGs succeeded the MDGs in September 2015 as the Global Development Benchmark up to the year 2030.

The SDGs Goals and targets will guide global development cooperation over the next fifteen years in the areas of People: Ending poverty and hunger, in all their forms and dimensions; Planet: Protecting the planet from degradation, including through sustainable consumption and production; Prosperity: Ensuring that all human beings can enjoy prosperous and fulfilling lives; Peace: Fostering peaceful, just and inclusive societies which are free from fear and violence; Partnership: Mobilizing the means required to implement this Agenda through a revitalized Global Partnership for Sustainable Development.

7 Kenya Vision 2030 The Kenya Vision 2030 presents a new dawn for Kenya. It is the country s long-term development blueprint. Its aim is to create a globally competitive and prosperous country with high quality of life. It thus, aspires to transform Kenya into a newly industrializing middle income country providing a high quality of life to all its citizens in a clean and secure environment by the year 2030

Social Pillar-A just and cohesive society enjoying equitable social development in a clean and secure environment Political Pillar-An issue-based, people-centered, result-oriented, and accountable democratic political system

9 ECONOMIC PILLAR Economic Pillar-To maintain a sustained economic growth of 10% p.a. Goal 1: End poverty in all its forms everywhere Goal 2: End hunger, achieve food security and improve nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture Goal 8: Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all Goal 10: Reduce inequality within and among countries

10 Social pillar- A just and cohesive society enjoying equitable social development in a clean and secure environment Social SOCIAL PILLAR Goal 3: Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages Goal 4: Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all Goal 5: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls Goal 6: Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all Goal 7: Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all Goal 9: Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation Goal 11: Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable Goal 12: Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns Goal 13: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts Goal 14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development Goal 15: Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss

11 POLITICAL PILLAR An issue-based, peoplecentered, result-oriented, and accountable democratic political system Goal 16: Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels Goal 17: Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development

13 Key Interventions Strategies Mapping of Stakeholders and Establishing Partnerships For? Forum for Dialogue and collaboration Advocacy and Sensitization on SDGs What is repeated is not forgotten! What is not forgotten is demanded! What id demanded is Implemented! Domestication/Localization of SDGS Mainstream SDGs into County CIDPs Cascade SDGs to the Counties Facilitating SDGs engagements at the lower levels Resource Mobilization for the Post 2015 Agenda Tracking and Reporting Capacity Building Creating a pool of resources to finance SDGs at International, Regional, County, Constituency Levels. Indicators and data for Monitoring and Evaluation of Progress Ensuring transition from MDGs to SDGs.

14 Conclusion The SDGs are the global development benchmarks for the next 15 years Development support and cooperation will be crucial in ensuring Kenya SDGs process is on track Technical backstopping by the United Nations and its Agencies will be critical during the SDGs era. Fruitful collaboration among stakeholders will be critical in the attainment of the goals Counties and other sub national formation will play a critical role in the SDGs process more than in the MDGs era.
