U13 Pathway Game Development The document provides a comprehensive explanation of the U13 Pathway process for , contains information relevant to athletes, parents, club and association representatives. All dates, times and locations are presented in good faith and demonstrate our commitment to allowing clubs, athletes and associations a structure to plan to. However, at this stage we are waiting on confirmation of the 2016 National competition and final structure of the 2016 season and as such dates and locations (as published here) for 2016 may need to change should circumstances dictate it. This does not affect dates published for Please note there have been changes to the times of sessions for all changes through the text are highlighted in red. (again we endeavour to keep these fixed and will contact individual athletes to let them know of the changes) For athletes born in 2003 you will also need to be aware of U15 pathway document to be published by end Feb 2016 and cross over clinics.

Pathway Process Rational The rational behind a shift to a more developmental, longitudinal approach to this age group is multifaceted and includes: Developmental differences in athletes of this age often means size/ age impacts on selection (Reference here The Matthew effect) A strong push by our community to provide broader developmentally based opportunities for our athletes. A strong push by our community to provide opportunities for athletes who do not necessarily have access to the same facility and expertise as others. A strong push by our community to provide a structured, logical pathway in order to align hockey with other sports. A strong push by our community to more effectively engage with athletes outside the Metro area. A strong push by our community to have a clearly articulated, transparent selection process which filters players towards State Selection. Support from Hockey Australia to create developmentally appropriate pathways for U13 s. Changes to process and Timings (please see appendix 2 and 3 for 2016 changes) It is our intent to maintain the dates and structure of the process as published to allow associations, clubs and athletes the ability to plan accordingly. However we are still waiting on key information which may alter the structure in 2016 slightly. Confirmation of dates of U13 National Competition- should this move from October 2016 we would need to pull forward the dates of the Super-camp and associated State trials and provide opportunities for our athletes to attend pathway clinics to meet the criteria. Turf Availability we have booked turf against the dates however final decisions on competitions have not yet been made and minor changes may therefore be necessary. As soon as we have confirmation of the above we will set pathway clinics in 2016 fully- it does however have no impact on how we will screen and run the pathway for Feedback and Modifications We will be actively seeking feedback throughout the process from Stakeholders to ensure we are developing a Pathway which maximizes the experience for as many of our athletes as possible and provides a logical and transparent process for Selection. 2
Initial Nomination Initial nomination will be completed in the same manner as the U13 Regional process, via coaches, clubs and associations. From then athletes manage their own pathway. Clubs nominate their allocated athletes as per the existing numbers for Regionals. Clubs complete the form on behalf of the athlete irrespective of the athlete s ability to attend the initial screening process. There is no need for clubs to rank the athletes. Athletes maintain their nominated status for the full cycle of the pathway and can access development clinics as outlined below. For Country, South West and Great Southern athlete access please see below. Clubs/ Associations also nominate selectors and coaches as per the criteria identified below. Self-nomination For athletes who wish to nominate from outside the club/ association allocation please be aware you do so into the identified Core Screening Clinics. In order to self nominate athletes will need to complete the self nomination form and provide the name of a club/association based contact who supports their application with details of why they should be considered. Please be aware in order to progress through from the Core Screening Clinics athletes will need to significantly impress selectors. Who to nominate- for? Only Athletes born in 2003 and 2004 should be put forward for nomination. Numbers of nominations Numbers of nominations (Metro) based on highest ranked team in the 5/6 competition Numbers to include GK s. A Grade- club to nominate up to 12 athletes A Promotion and A Reserve Grades- club to nominate up to 8 athletes B Grade- club to nominate up to 4 athletes C Grade- club to nominate up to 2 athletes 3
Screening Initial Screening Only Athletes nominated by Club/ Association may attend the Initial Screening. The purpose of the initial screening process it to identify athletes who sit at both ends of the bell curve within this group of talented athletes and appropriately allocate them to the Ignite and Ember pathways or Core Development Clinics. Ignite pathway athletes - are those athletes who during the initial screening process demonstrate a high degree of consistency across all areas. (small number of athletes initially growing through the year as Ember pathway athletes are invited) Ember pathway athletes are those athletes who during initial screening demonstrate reasonable consistency across all areas or a group of areas and need more opportunity to demonstrate consistency or more support in some key areas. (the largest number of athletes) Core clinic athletes- are those athletes who during the initial screening process demonstrate low degree of consistency across all areas and would benefit from additional support in core skill development. (small number of athletes) Club/ Associations Athletes unable to attend Initial Screening Athletes nominated by club/ Association who are unable to attend screening for circumstances beyond their control maintain their nominated status and enter the pathway process in the Ember tier. Ongoing Screening One of the main differences between this and the Regional Process is it provides our athletes with additional screening opportunities through the year and therefore gives athletes multiple opportunities within a streamed pathway. A variety of selectors will attend all sessions and utilize the same structured screening methodology as per the initial screening. For self-nominated athletes there are 2 opportunities to access the pathway. 4
The Program Each tier in the pathway will offer a program to suit the needs of the group of athletes in it. The raw data from screening will form the basis of the planning process for the initial sessions and from there sessions will be planned to allow for differentiation and individual athlete growth. The sessions will be a combination of core and advanced skill development, small and larger game play within an appropriate environment for our U13 athletes and based at most on a 1:10 coach to athlete ratio. Running alongside the on field process will be athlete education. We are planning to hold 1 Ignite and 1 Ember box clinic in a non-metro area and eligible metro athletes are also invited to attend these clinics. Both Ignite and Ember tiers have a 2 day super camp as the conclusion to the Program which provides those athletes with the opportunity to express their skills in a competitive environment. Ignite tier Athletes earn their way into this tier by demonstrating a consistent and high level application of their game. Athletes maintain their position in this group by demonstrating that consistency and an appropriate attitude and engagement. Although attendance at all sessions is not compulsory it is encouraged (particularly those in-season sessions) and Metro based athletes who wish to be considered for the 2 day super camp (also Trial 1 for State selection) must engage with the post screening pathway on at least 2 occasions prior to the camp. Ember tier Athletes in this tier demonstrate a reasonable degree of consistency across all or a group of the core areas or a high level of consistency in one area but lower levels in other areas. Athletes in this tier may need additional time or a more familiar environment to demonstrate their skills to full effect. Athletes in this tier may demonstrate great potential but have not yet physically developed enough to match the speed and physicality of some of their age related peers. Athletes in this tier will have multiple opportunities to earn their way into the Ignite tier should they wish to. Athletes who are club/ Association nominated but unable to attend screening enter the pathway process at this level. Athletes are encourage to attend as many sessions as they can (particularly those in season sessions) and athletes who wish to be considered for the 2 day super camp must engage with the post screening pathway on at least 2 occasions prior to the camp. 5
Core Development Clinics Athletes in this tier demonstrate a low degree of consistency across all or some areas. Athletes in this area may need additional support in some key areas or more time to practice. Athletes in this tier may be new to hockey and are transferring from another sport where they excelled and need some additional skill development. Athletes in this tier may need more exposure to the playing surface to refine their skill set. Athletes in this tier may be self nominated and as such will need to significantly impress the selectors to progress. Athletes in this tier may need a more familiar environment in order to demonstrate their skill set fully. Athletes are encouraged to attend both sessions and are also encouraged to attend HockeyWA holiday camps should they wish to. Ignite Super Camp Up to 112 children who wish to be considered from eligible athletes in the Ignite stream are invited to attend a 2-day super camp. Those athletes are grouped into even teams, allocated a coach and play in a round robin competition. This is also Trial 1 for State Selection for those athletes who wish to be considered. Ember Super Camp Up to 112 children who wish to be considered from eligible athletes in the Ember stream are invited to attend a 2-day super camp. Those athletes are grouped into even teams, allocated a coach and play in a round robin competition. 6
Connecting Regional Athletes Regional Associations have through discussion identified the most appropriate connection to the pathway for their context. The following is reflective of the approach for , but following this year and based on feedback, adjustments may be made to provide greater opportunity for our Regional athletes to engage with the pathways. Country Pending decision- assume to Super-camp South West Pending decision- assume to Super-camp Great Southern Pending decision- assume to Super-camp Athletes playing outside of the Metro competition who wish to self-nominate. Any athlete who wishes to self nominate and plays outside of the metro competition does so into the Core Screening Clinics. Support from a club or association representative will be asked for in self-nominating, and the self nomination form will need to be completed. By exception athletes with full support of club/ association who play outside of the Metro competition may be invited to attend the Ember pathway. Athletes living Regionally and seeking development opportunities, may also want to consider HockeyWA summer camps- up to 4 days of back to back hockey. 7
Attendance Requirements (Metro based) and Fees. 1) Club/Association Nomination a. Once nominated by your club further engagement with the pathway becomes the responsibility of the athlete. It is important the athlete understands the process and if they are unsure they should ask their club representative. b. Clubs/Associations pay initial nomination fee. c. Following initial club nomination- you will receive an inviting you to screening and checking your availability throughout that day. (NB it is vital your details are accurate) You will need to Register for this. 2) Attend Screening Athletes attend an allocated screening for 2 hours. Athletes who by exception are unavailable to attend will be allocated to the Ember pathway. 3) Pathway clinics Athlete attends nominated pathway clinics throughout the year based on their availability and desire. Athletes are responsible for lodging their own registration for each session and payment. Please note here there are eligibility criteria should you wish to be considered for the super-camp and State Trials. 4) Super-camps To be eligible to attend your tier Super-Camp athletes must have engaged with the pathway at least twice during the cycle (attend a minimum of 2 sessions). Eligible athletes are invited to nominate for the 2 day super-camp- Nomination and payment responsibility of athletes. 5) State Selection Eligible athletes who wish to be considered for State section do so individually. Nomination and payment is the athlete s responsibility. Please note there are eligibility criteria and suitable candidates are expected to attend all trials. 6) Payment Schedule Please note the payment schedule for each component for in appendix 1. 7) Financial Support While we have endeavored to keep our fees to a minimum we understand for some these fees may prohibit access. Support will be considered for athletes with financial constraints which may prevent the athlete being able to engage with the process. Athletes who access Kids in Sport vouchers to play Hockey are an example of athletes we will consider supporting. Application for financial support can be done at initial point of Registration. 8
State Selection Eligibility In order to be considered for state selection, Metro competition based athletes must earn their way into the Ignite pathway and be eligible to attend the Ignite super-camp. Eligibility based on commitment to the process and attendance at a minimum of 2 Ignite clinics (streamed Ignite athletes) or attendance at a minimum of 2 Ember clinics and an invitation to join the Ignite pathway- (streamed Ember athletes). Athletes nominate themselves to be considered prior to Trial 1. Non- metro based athletes must attend Super-camp or if Self nominated must have attended at least 1 clinic and have been invited to the Ignite Pathway. In very exceptional circumstances and by application athletes who could not attend Trial 1 can attend Trial 2. Trial 1 State Selection- Ignite Super-Camp This 2 day competition forms the basis of selection for those athletes who wish to nominate for selection. There is no obligation to nominate should the athlete not wish to. Trial 2 State Selection Athletes selected from Trial 1 and eligible Ignite pathway athletes who by exception could not attend Trial 1 (these athletes will need to significantly impress to move to Trial 3 and we discourage this). Trial 3 State Selection Athletes selected from Trial 2. At the end of Trial 3, 32 Athletes and 2-4 train-ons will be identified. Other Relevant Documents for State Process and current status 1. 11 Selectors Clubs nominate 2 suitable selectors with initial nominations. Club nominated selectors are ideally not related to any of the nominated athletes however we acknowledge in this age group a great deal of our experience rests in the parent group and the difficulty some clubs face in identifying non related selectors. We therefore ask clubs to identify any children being screened who are related to their nominated selector at point of nomination. Selectors who are related to athletes being screened will be asked to screen the session before or after their child/ relative attends. The same applies to coaches involved in the screening process. Initial Screening day Club nominated selectors will be called on to be available for up to 2 sessions through the screening day (max 4 hours) and up to 2 other pathway clinics through the year. Process in brief Selectors will be briefed prior to commencing screening. Ideally we are working towards 4 club-based selectors from different clubs at each session. Each selector will be responsible for providing feedback for up to 25 athletes across the 2 hour block against designated criteria. Ideal session size 48 athletes but will take up to 50 based on attendance/athlete availability across the day. Each athlete will be given detailed consideration by 2 selectors Additional selectors, 3 moderating selectors will consider all of the athletes in each session and will be consistent throughout the day and therefore provide moderation. A coordinating selector will draw the raw data together at the end of each session and facilitate any required discussion. A Hockey WA representative will take this role. Selectors State Expressions of interest for a representative group of Selectors will be called for 29 th February 2016 and appointments made 31 st March These Selectors will join the pathways process at the start of June as a fresh set of eyes and will attend at least 1 Ignite and 1 Ember pathway prior to the super camps to provide input to the Pathways Selection Team. 10
Coaches Coaches Pathway Coaches will be identified from initial club nominations but will act as observers through the pathway process until the final Ignite/ Ember pathway session where they will be involved in allocation of players into groups prior to the Ignite and Ember Super-camps. Should coaches be parents of athletes they will need to absent themselves from decisions involving related athletes and will not coach their own children during the super-camp. Coaches State Expressions of interest for the 3 coaching staff will be called for 29 th February 2016 and appointments made 31 st March The 2 team coaches will join the pathways process at the start of June. Other documentation Please also refer to State Selection Policy Document. Role descriptors are under development and will be rolled out following review of 2015 competition. Structure of State competition Dates and Structure of the 2016 competition are pending and as such we are unable to confirm if we are sending 2 even teams or a 1 st and 2 nd team at this stage. When making this decision HockeyWA will consider: The competition structure Hockey Australia s view on participation in this age A review of the 2015 competition For all questions regarding this document and the U13 pathway please contact HockeyWA Development Coach. 11

FAQ The Club Nominated athlete can t attend screening does that mean they can t be part of the process? The athlete joins the pathway in the Ember stream when they are available as long as they are Club or Association nominated. Do I have to attend all of the Clinics? No you do not have to attend all of the clinics, however should you wish to be considered for State Selection you need to have engaged at least twice after screening and have earned your way into the Ignite Pathway. Can I self nominate? Yes you can self nominate. However you must have support from a committee member in your Club/Association or your coach (not a parent) to do so. There are 2 opportunities for you to enter before the end of see dates connected to Screening/ Core Clinics. You will need to significantly impress the selectors at those clinics in order to progress. Why do we need to pay? In order for us to ensure we have quality coaching throughout the pathway and have expertise developing the program we have factored in a fee. We have endeavoured to keep this fee reasonable and should any athletes have financial constraints they can apply for support to access the pathway. Why is there more Structure around State nomination? We have received significant feedback from our community about the increasing numbers of Athletes entering the State Selection process at Trial 2. This practice makes it challenging to have an in-depth consideration of all athletes and so we have tightened the criteria, to ensure our selectors are able to view athletes in a structured competitive environment, and to ensure all of our athletes are given a broad opportunity to demonstrate their skills. Are the times fixed? Times for 2015 are booked. Times for 2016 are planned and pending but we are waiting on confirmation of the competition structure for 2016 and as such cannot fully commit to all times. Variation will be kept within those constraints to a minimal. As soon as the competition is finalised we will release fixed dates. 15
