INTRODUCTION This curriculum guide is for all Year 9 students and parents/carers. The aims of this guide are: to explain school policy on the key stage 4 curriculum to give guidance about making the right choices, from both an educational and career point of view, and to outline the procedure that will be followed in the decision making process to outline the information, advice, guidance and support that is offered by the school to provide both students and parents/carers with information about the courses offered so that everyone knows what is expected in each course, as well as what the various courses may lead to in terms of post-16 courses and careers This guide provides students and parents with the information they need to understand the principles behind the curriculum we offer and helps students to make the right choices for their future. Further information can be obtained by attending the options evening or contacting Mr Little (Assistant Head Curriculum) at the school. 3
CURRICULUM PRINCIPLES Our curriculum is designed to support all young people to become: successful learners - who enjoy learning, make progress and achieve very well. confident individuals - who are able to live safe, healthy and fulfilling lives. responsible citizens - who make a positive contribution to society. We provide programmes of learning that respond to students individual needs and interests, preparing them for the next stage of their education/training. There are also many opportunities for educational visits, clubs, sporting opportunities, field trips, competitions, fundraising events, theatre trips and music workshops that extend students experiences. We work with a number of outside agencies to provide a broad and relevant curriculum for every one of our students. THE KEY STAGE 4 CURRICULUM When students move into key stage 4 they do not all follow exactly the same curriculum. Students need to make some choices which will mean that they give up some subjects to spend more time on others. There are a number of subjects that the National Curriculum requires all students to study. There is also an increased focus on the EBacc (English baccalaureate) subjects. The EBacc subjects are English literature and language, maths, triple/double science, MFL, computer science and history or geography. There are 3 option pathways designed to match and support the different needs and abilities of key stage 4 students. Pathway 1 allows students to follow a mainly academic route, which includes triple science, computer science and if appropriate a language. Pathway 2 is the more traditional route, allowing students to opt for a mixture of qualifications and courses. Pathway 3 is a slightly more vocational/practical route, guiding students to opt of courses with a proportion of practical assessment. The recommended pathway for each student is based upon teacher assessments throughout key stage 3. Each pathway should ensure that they are given the best possible opportunity to achieve during key stage 4. The table on the following page shows the number of hours that students spend in each subject each week. Not all subjects are compulsory for all students. 4
THE KEY STAGE 4 CURRICULUM The table below shows the number of hours that students spend in each subject each week. Not all subjects are compulsory for all students. 6 CORE CURRICULUM SUBJECTS AT KEY STAGE 4 In key stage 4, all students study English, mathematics, science, PE, citizenship and religious studies as part of our core curriculum. In addition, we provide learning pathways which build on students successes at key stage 3 where they can study from a range of choices including subjects such as: art, languages, history, geography, drama, dance, music, textiles, food technology and others. This ensures that we provide opportunities for different kinds of learning to suit the interests, aspirations and abilities of individual students. Students can achieve between 9 and 10 GCSE or equivalent passes. The national expectation is that all 16-year-old students should achieve at least 8 GCSE passes. English All students will study English language and English literature. Students in Pathway 3 may have additional English and/or maths lessons each week if recommended. Mathematics All students study mathematics. Students in Pathway 3 may have additional maths and/or English lessons each week if recommended. Languages Studying a language is strongly recommended for those students demonstrating appropriate aptitude. All students with some ability in languages (French & Spanish) are encouraged to choose a language course as it has been highlighted as a key skill for those wishing to go on to further and higher education. Students who are fluent in another language will have the opportunity to sit a GCSE examination in their home language if this is appropriate and support may be provided. Physical Education (PE) All students study core PE for 1 hour per week. In addition to this, students will have the option to choose between GCSE PE or BTEC Dance within the option blocks. Religious Studies (RS) and Citizenship All students will study religious studies. RS is a requirement for all students as part of the National Curriculum. Within the RS curriculum at key stage 4 we also cover the statutory curriculum elements of careers education and guidance, sex and relationships education, drugs and alcohol education and British values. Science All students study science, but there are a number of different courses depending on which pathway a student is studying. Pathway 1 students will follow triple science. This means they can achieve three GCSE grades at the end of the course and allows students to go on to study science at AS/A2 level. Students in Pathway 2 and 3 will follow a double science award. The science course students follow is chosen based upon assessments in key stage 3.
DECISION TIME YEAR 9 CHOICES FOR KEY STAGE 4 In the Spring term of year 9, students will need to make their choices about which courses they wish to study at key stage 4. They will be given guidance and help with their choices during careers lessons. During key stage 3, students will have received careers lessons and will have worked with tutors, citizenship teachers and our careers staff. Students may also have met our careers advisors, visited our careers library, attend the Lealands careers fair and accessed some online careers resources. Information and guidance is also given through assemblies, presentations and interviews as well as provided within subjects. Students are encouraged to seek advice from all these sources as well as parents and relatives. In March, students and parents are invited to attend an Options Evening in which further details of courses offered are available and subject staff can speak to parents and students individually. Advice will be given about whether courses are suitable for the individual student based upon prior attainment in a variety of subjects. Students will then need to complete options forms indicating their preferences. We always try to give students the choices they want. As well as the core subjects and compulsory subjects that all students study, there are a number of subjects available for students to choose. Students should choose courses in which they achieve well in and those which they enjoy. They should also ensure they understand the requirements of those subjects at GCSE level. Advice will be given to students based on: discussions that are held with students in preparation for the decision our knowledge of the student s ability and interests our professional opinion about what choices are suitable for the individual Students will need to choose a combination of the following subjects. Some restrictions may apply depending upon the pathway a student is in. 8 VOCATIONAL COURSES This year 3 vocational courses will be offered due to the changes to qualifications that schools can provide. These courses focus on learning which is directly associated with the world of work and are more practically based. Students in all Pathways have the opportunity to choose BTEC Dance. Students in Pathway 3 will study both the ECDL and ASDAN courses. Subject BTEC First Award in Dance VOCATIONAL COURSES ECDL (European Computing Driving Licence) ASDAN Hours per week 3 hours 3 hours 8
Explanation of the various qualifications Legacy GCSEs (ICT, Textiles and Resistant Materials) GCSE courses are assessed by both examinations and controlled assessment/coursework. Coursework may involve artwork, fieldwork, assignments or experiments. For some subjects, everyone sits the same exam. For other subjects there are two tiers higher and foundation. Each tier leads to a different range of grades. Grades range from A* - G. The subject teacher will decide which tier is best for a student. If a student is thinking about continuing academic studies at A level they will need at least 5 GCSEs including English and mathematics at grade C+ or equivalent. There are other post 16 courses apart from A levels that do not require as many GSCEs. New GCSEs As part of the Government s qualification reform all GCSEs are to be changed. Therefore, from September 2016 most of the GCSE qualifications will have new specifications. Grades now range from 9 1 (9 being the highest grade and 1 being the lowest). The vast majority of the new GCSEs are now only assessed by an exam at the end of year 11. Where there is a controlled assessment element of the qualifications, it will now have a reduced weighting. Please see specific qualifications for more details. BTECs BTECs are applied learning courses where students learn skills related to the world of work. We offer BTEC Dance. They can equip a student with the knowledge and skills that employers are looking for. BTECs are assessed through coursework and exams. As part of the Government s recent qualifications review, BTECs now include an exam at the end of the course. BTEC courses are graded: pass, merit, distinction and distinction*. The English Baccalaureate (EBacc) The Government announced the introduction of the English Baccalaureate (EBacc) in November Rather than being a single qualification, it is a group of qualifications that are achieved by passing specific GCSE subjects. If a student does not achieve these subjects, they cannot achieve the EBacc. The subjects that students need to pass in order to achieve the EBacc are: English (language or literature) mathematics science (double or triple science) a language geography or history or computer science The EBacc is a new way of measuring the success of students in schools who are following a particularly academic route. The curriculum that students need to follow in order to achieve the English Baccalaureate is not suitable for all students but it is important that we encourage as many students as is appropriate to follow this curriculum. All students in Pathway 1 can opt to following a curriculum that will enable them to achieve the EBacc. Students in Pathway 2 may also choose these subjects, but this may not always be appropriate. Students aiming for top universities or professional careers are advised to study EBacc qualifications. This is a demanding academic route. Teachers are always available to give advice. Students should choose courses that they will find stimulating and enjoyable. 9

CAREERS Information, Advice and Guidance and Careers Education Our careers programme aims to provide students with knowledge, skills and attitudes associated with the successful transition from school to adult life. Humanities staff, tutors, subject teachers and our careers staff deliver our careers guidance programme and contribute to the teaching of careers. The school works in partnership with external careers advisors, local colleges, the Education and Business Partnership (EBP) and local employers to provide a programme that enables all students, whatever their interests and abilities, to make informed choices about their future. In years 7 and 8 students study a series of careers based lessons within the humanities curriculum. In March of Year 9, parents and students are invited to an Options Evening where possible choices for the future are explained to them. Careers Library We have a careers library onsite, within the Learning Resource Centre which is run by a careers coordinator who can give advice and answer questions. Information can be given about colleges, universities, courses and careers. Access to web based resources is also available. Work Related Learning Work related learning is taught largely through our vocational courses. Students learn about work ethics and are helped to develop inter-personal skills. This also enables students to make informed choices about post 16 options as it helps them to broaden their career horizons. Most students participate in a two-week work experience with a local employer. Work experience is organised in collaboration with the Education and Business Partnership (EBP). This takes place during Year 10. In years 10 and 11 this guidance continues within citizenship lessons as well as through: presentations from local colleges; taster days; university visits and careers interviews from careers advisors and our careers coordinator. We also host an annual careers fair in January, giving students the opportunity to talk to over 30 local employers, colleges and university s. 23
FUTURE OPTIONS AFTER LEALANDS It is important that students choose their GCSE options for the right reasons. The advice given to the students is that they should choose subjects that: they enjoy they have some success in they think they might want to continue in the future they might need in order to get to certain colleges or universities We receive regular information from colleges and universities about their requirements for certain types of courses. All courses we offer will give successful and hardworking students the opportunity to continue to college and university. However, it is important that students are aware of what they might need if they intend to go on to do a particular course. Below is some guidance. A Levels In order to study 3 or 4 AS/ A levels, students will need to have passed 5 GCSEs (A*-C/ 9-4) including English and mathematics. Students will need to have passed at least 5 GCSEs in separate subjects. Equivalent subjects giving multiple awards will be treated as 1 GCSE by most colleges/sixth forms. If a student wishes to study A level science at college, they will need 2 high-grade GCSE science grades (5+). Post-16 institutes are continually changing their entry requirements for courses and students should be aware that 8 good GCSEs is now the national standard. BTEC National Certificates If a student wants to study BTEC National Certificates at college they will need to have passed 4 GCSEs at A*-C/ 9-4. BTEC First qualifications (Merit or Distinction only) will count as one GCSE. Universities The requirements of universities vary greatly depending on courses and types of university. There are certain universities and courses that particularly value certain subjects. It is important for students to remember that whatever curriculum they follow at Lealands, it will not prevent them from continuing to college or university. Most courses will require students to have English and mathematics GCSEs at A*-C / 9-4 Level. Languages are highly valued amongst top universities if a student wishes to study academic courses. History and geography are two other valued subjects and are part of the new English Baccalaureate group of subjects. If a student has particular ideas about what they want to go on to study at college or university they should seek advice about their choices to ensure that they are leaving their future options open. Ms Fulton & Miss Griffiths, our careers staff, is always happy to talk to students or parents to give advice and guidance. 24
