V-MUST.NET Virtual Museum Transnational Network N.o.E. FP G.A Sofia Pescarin - CNR ITABC
What is v-must.net A network of Excellence financed by the FP7, dedicated to Virtual Museums 4 years project: February 2011 February 2015 Budget: ,00 Euro 18 Partners coming from 13 different countries Coordinator: CNR (ITABC + ISTI and ITD)
v-must.net The Virtual Museums Transnational Network (VMusT.net) is a European Network of Excellence that brings together research centres, universities, museums and companies that focus on the sector of virtual museums and have the knowledge and capacity to provide solutions for making this sector more mature and structured.
v-must partners CNR - Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (ITABC ISTI ITD) APRE Comune di Roma, Sovraintendenza ai Beni Culturali, Museo dei Fori Imperiali STARC, Cyprus Institute Foundation of the Hellenic World Allard Pirson Museum, Univ. of Amsterdam CULTNAT CINECA Fraunhofer Institute für Graphische Datenverarbeitung King s College London, Centre for Computing in the Humanities Virtualware University of Sarajevo, Dept. Computer Science INRIA-IPARLA Joint Research Team Lund University, Dept. of Design Sciences Visual Dimension Sociedad Española de Arqueología Virtual Noho LTD University of Brighton, University of Brighton s Business School
Around v-must V-MusT.net has a Museum Advisory Board and an Expert Advisory Board to help defining the most optimal way to achieve this, plus a large group of Associated Members (almost 50) that participate in this process.
Virtual Museums Virtual museums are a new model of communication for the museum sector that aims at creating a personalised, immersive and interactive way to enhance our understanding the past. The term virtual museum covers a wide variety of digital systems and applications that in most cases use virtual or augmented reality, interactivity and storytelling in a museum or online context.
Virtual Museums Although the concept of virtual museum is not new and although most VMs are located in Europe, the development & implementation of such systems has not yielded a leading position for Europe in the sector The use of such systems is still far beyond the vast potential, because most people in the sector consider such systems still prototypes and unsuited for daily museum use
Virtual Museums in Italy The domain had an increadible increase between 1998 and has represented the pick in Italy. After an analysis recently carried out (in print in the volumes EAC Occasional Papers Series) > 40 virtual museums: only 50% is still accessible, 23% if we consider cases before 2009! Same situation in Europe. The result??? Really problematic from a cultural point of view (lack of accessibiliy to knowledge), scientific (lack of accessibility to scientific results) and economic (public funding!)
problems to be solved With Virtual museums research institutes still need to get connected to the industry and museums still need to find their way in specifying and using such systems in their daily practice. Solving these problems would not only create a major benefit for the museum and CH sector but also provide new business and job opportunities in a sector, in which Europe has an excellent experience
How to start? This is where we've started to build up the project: A real problem A community already around a table convinced of the urgency of the problem Writing in not only filling a blank page :)
v-must structure WP1 is aimed at the management WP2 defines the base of knowledge, on top of which the rest of the work will be built. It is aimed at defining a common language related to the Virtual Museum field, and it identifies problems, needs and requirements useful in the other WPs, through discussion groups (House of Question) WP3 takes input from WP2 and it works at research level on the field of communication, cognitive science and ontology, producing reference models, framework and indications on theoretical model of Virtual Museums.
v-must structure WP4 takes input from WP2, WP3, WP5 and WP7. It identifies a service platform with its infrastructural components and integrated services, to be used by V-MusT.net partners and by VM community: - Virtual Museums production services MM assets archiving repository E-Learning platform... WP5 is focused on visualisation, interaction, new output devices and on the identification of tools useful to build up the research community. It makes a selection of proper existing tools and define how they can be connected or integrated and structured into a platform. It gives results to WP7, in charge of testing them.
v-must structure WP6 is in charge of the development of a Mobility program (V-Move), Training Program (VMusTer.School) and Educational Program. - v-must virtual heritage schools: national program opened sept WP7 is aimed ad building the experimental laboratory of the entire project, organizing testing of Virtual Museum test-beds and developing a Joint Project (Transmedia Project) where every partner will be involved in the creation of a virtual museum dedicated to a common topic (Roman Culture) WP8 > dissemination and exploitation
wp7/wp8-archeovirtual Paestum, Salerno, Italy (BMTA)
v-must in action V-MusT.net tries to make next generation Virtual Museums more communicative and effective, more sustainable (reusable, exchangeable), more accessible and visible in public spaces or on line. V-MusT.net studies and assesses the current technologies and methodologies for VMs future preservation and the impact on the lifecycle of VMs, trying to bring digital preservation to a more practical level.
v-must in action V-MusT.net main expectation is to create a wide consensus, that will be a stimulus for the creation of the next generation Virtual Museum. The wide consensus will be based on the sharing of a common language and of a common practical experience, acquired on the ground during a challenging 4-years experiment (Interactive Lab).
v-must in action V-MusT.net is bridging several technological domains, museology, social and cognitive sciences and digital preservation to focus on improving the quality and lifecycle of virtual museums, on making them more robust and easy to maintain and on integrating them into the museums of the 21st century. As a network, it enables heritage professionals around the world to connect, collaborate and advance the development and use of virtual museums.
v-must activities House of Question (WP2) Experts Task-Force (WP2, WP7) V-Must Development Camp V-MusT.net Platform E-learning Virtual Heritage School and Virtual Museum Academy (WP6) Transmedia Tools for the Virtual Museum of the Future (WP5) Quality Assessment & Award (WP7) Virtual Museum Laboratory (WP7) Transmedia VM Project (WP7) European VM Observatory (WP8) Interactive expo (WP8)
