3 What s Included Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard includes HP Designjet printer drivers plus HP utility for the full print and utility functionality. The latest HP Designjet software and print utility for the HP Designjet printers listed below are also included in the Mac OS X 10.6 retail DVD, Apple Software updates, and all new Macs that are delivered with Snow Leopard. The version of the drivers included in the DVD and Apple Software update are: Snow Leopard DVD PostScript drivers version 5.3 Apple Software update Raster drivers version PostScript drivers version 5.4 Important: Do not reinstall drivers from the original HP Designjet CDs or web downloads from previous Mac OS X 10.3, 10.4 or Older software is not compatible with Snow Leopard. The latest Mac OS X 10.6 compatible HP print drivers are included in Mac OS X 10.6 DVD, Apple Software Updates, and new Macs. You will experience the optimum performance and functionality if the latest HP software is used. HP Designjet Printer setup instructions The following sections describe how to install your HP Designjet printer under the following circumstances: 1. Upgrading to Mac OS X 10.6 from Mac OS X 10.4 or Configuring your HP Designjet printer with a new Macintosh with Snow Leopard already installed or after performing a clean install from the Snow Leopard DVD. 1. Upgrading to a Mac OS X 10.6 If you are upgrading your Mac OS X 10.6 from Mac 10.4 or 105 If you have a PostScript Designjet printer, the queue will automatically be recreated using the latest HP drivers included in Snow Leopard. After recreating your queues, Apple Software may launch automatically and suggest that you download a new driver for your printers. In order to have the most up to date driver for your HP Designjet printers, please install the update from Apple Software. If you have a non PostScript Designjet printer, the Apple Software Update application might launch allowing you to install the new driver for your printer. However if the Apple Software Update does not automatically launch, please launch it manually by going to Apple SW Update Note: If you are using or sharing a printer that is connected directly to an Apple Airport with a USB or Ethernet cable, these printer queues will NOT be recreated. A new printer queue can easily be quickly created using the steps below. Printing from a USB Printer 1. Make sure your printer is turned on and connected. 2. Open a document or web page to print, and then choose File > Print. Note: You can also go directly to System Preferences > Print & Fax. 3. From the Printer pop-up menu, choose your printer. If you do not see your printer listed, choose Add Printer, and click Default 4. In the Name column, select your printer, and then click Add. Printing from a Network Printer You can connect to HP printers on your local network (wireless and Ethernet) using Bonjour and IP, as well as shared printers connected to an Apple Airport base station. Note: Apple does NOT support AppleTalk in Mac OS X

4 1. Make sure your printer is turned on and connected. 2. Open a document or web page to print, and then choose File > Print. Note: You can also go directly to System Preferences > Print & Fax. 3. From the Printer pop-up menu, choose your printer. Your printer may also be listed in the Nearby Printers submenu. A dialog box is displayed, listing any Bonjour printers on your local network. It may take a minute or two for your printer to appear. 4. If your printer does not appear, choose Add Printer from the Printer pop-up menu. Printers that are turned on and connected to the local network (wireless and Ethernet) should appear as Bonjour devices. 5. Select your printer from the list and click Add to create the HP printer queue for your HP Designjet printer. Important: On larger networks, outside the Bonjour link-local network, your printer may not show up in the list. In this case, you can connect to your printer using its IP address. An IP printer is a network printer that uses TCP/IP protocol (such as HP Jetdirect, LPD/LPR, IPP) to communicate with your printer. You will need to know the printer s IP address or DNS name (available from the printer s front panel or Network Configuration Page). 1. In the toolbar, click IP. 2. From the Protocol pull-down menu, choose HP Jetdirect Socket. 3. This is the preferred protocol to connect to HP printers. For best performance please do not use IPP or LPD. 4. Enter your printer s network information IP address or DNS name. 5. The system should automatically select the appropriate HP print driver in the Print Using pull down menu. 6. Click Add to create the HP printer queue for your HP Designjet printer. HP Utility The latest HP Utility is included in Mac OS X Use the HP Utility to manage and troubleshoot the printer. HP Utility is the new application replacing HP Printer Utility for your HP Designjet printers. Please check your users guide to find out if your Designjet printer includes HP Utility support. 1. Make sure your printer is turned on and connected. 2. From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences. 3. Click Print & Fax preferences. 4. In the list of devices on the left side of the dialog (the HP printer queue), select your HP Designjet printer. 5. Click Options and Supplies. 6. Click the Utility tab at the top of the window, and then click Open Printer Utility. The HP Utility opens. Features and options may vary depending on your printer model. Alternative: The HP Utility can also be launched from the printer icon in the dock to open the Printer Browser window. 1. Double click on the printer icon. The Printer browser window opens. 2. Click Printer Setup in toolbar 3. Click Utility tab 4. Click Open Printer Utility button The HP Utility opens. Features and options may vary depending on your printer model. 4

5 NOTE: You can administer most networked HP Designjet printers by accessing the Embedded Web Server in the printer. A few different ways to open the printers Embedded Web Server include: 1) From Safari open the Bonjour tab under the book icon pull down menu and select the printer. 2) From any web browser, enter the printer s IP address in the browsers address bar. Please check your users guide to verify if your printer includes Embedded Web Server. Additionally, some printers can be managed by the System Maintenance Utility. The new version of the System Maintenance Utility supporting Snow Leopard will be available at HP Graphic Arts Portal. Please check your users guide to find out if your Designjet printer supports the System Maintenance Utility. 2. Configuring your HP printer with Snow Leopard already installed Configuring your new HP Printer on a new Macintosh with Snow Leopard already installed, or after performing a clean install from the Snow Leopard DVD If you have installed the HP drivers from the Snow Leopard DVD, queues for your USB connected PostScript printers will automatically be created. The Apple Software Update application will launch automatically when detecting a USB connected Raster printer. If the Apple Software Update application is not launched in your system, please follow the same steps as listed above in the Printing from a USB Printer section to create your queue. For network setup, please follow the same steps as listed above in the Printing from a Network Printer section. For some HP devices, it may be important to make sure the Mac is connected to the Internet in order to access Apple Software Updates for the latest HP software. Important: Do not reinstall drivers from the original HP Designjet CDs or web downloads from previous Mac OS X 10.3, 10.4, or Older software is not compatible with Snow Leopard. 6 Note: The new drivers for these models are not included on the Apple Mac OS X Snow Leopard DVD. The latest drivers for these models should be available from Apple Software Updates. It is important to have the Macintosh connected to the internet during upgrade and installation to access Apple Software Updates.
