1 Installing the KX-P8420 or KX-PS8100 on Windows NT 4.0. Overview The KX-P8420 and KX-PS8100 can be set up using 2 methods. METHOD 1 The printer can be installed on the NT server and setup as a shared device. METHOD 2 The printer can be setup using Microsoft TCP\IP Printing service on NT Workstation clients and peer to peer on Windows 95/98 clients. The latter will allow all print jobs to spool directly to the printer, freeing up the server resources for other server responsibilities. This document contains instructions for both methods. Choosing the method of installation is the responsibility of the network administrator. In the case of the KX-PS8100 utilizing PCM (Print Count Manager) Method 1 must be used. Considerations METHOD 1 Method 1 will spool all print jobs through the NT server. 1) If this is the first PostScript printer being installed access to the Windows NT installation files are necessary. 2) All workstations must have valid TCP\IP addresses, Subnet masks, and Default gateways. 3) The printer must be assigned a valid, unique TCP\IP address. 4) WebTools are not required to setup and enable TCP\IP in the printer. There are other useful printer and print job administration features available using WebTools. WebTools require TCP\IP protocol and a JAVA enabled web browser (Netscape 3.02 and Internet Explorer 4.0). To display WebTools properly the display resolution must be 800 X 600 or higher. 5) It is not recommended to connect the printer to the NT server via LPT. Installation consists of three sections Section 1) Enabling and entering the TCP\IP information into the printer. Section 2) Configuring the print driver at the NT server. Section 3) Configuring the print driver at the client. Section 1 Enabling and entering the TCP\IP information into the printer from the front panel. 1) Press Menu 1 time. 2) Press 5 until Network Protocol Setup is displayed. 3) Press Enter and TCP\IP Setup is displayed. 1

2 4) Press Enter and Enable TCP\IP? is displayed. 5) Press Enter and Enable TCP\IP? NO is displayed. 6) Press 5 to change NO to YES and press Enter. Ethernet IP Address is displayed. 7) Press Enter. The current IP address assigned to the printer is displayed. 8) Use the 5 and 3 to change the IP address to the desired address. Start from the rightmost digit and work your way left. 5 will increase the digit over the cursor, 3 will shift the cursor one digit to the left. 9) Press Enter and Ethernet Subnet Mask is displayed. 10) Press Enter and the current Subnet mask assigned to the printer is displayed. 11) Use the 5 and 3 to change the Subnet mask to the desired Subnet mask. Start from the rightmost digit and work your way left. 5 will increase the digit over the cursor, 3 will shift the cursor one digit to the left. 12) Press Enter and Gateway Address is displayed. 13) Press Enter and the current Gateway address is displayed. 14) Use the 5 and 3 to change the Gateway to the desired Gateway. Start from the rightmost digit and work your way left. 5 will increase the digit over the cursor, 3will shift the cursor one digit to the left. 15) Press Enter and AppleTalk Setup is displayed. 16) Press Exit and the printer will reinitialize with the TCP\IP information entered. 17) Ensure that the network cable is inserted into the printer. Section 2 Configuring the print driver on the NT server. Pointing the driver to the printer. Note: When installing the print driver, select LPT1 as the port and re-direct the driver after the driver is installed. 6) Click Start, and follow the pop-up menu to Settings and Printers. Left click the Printers folder. 7) Right click on the printer icon and select Properties from the pop-up menu. 8) Click on the Ports tab. 2

3 9) Click on the Add Port... button and the Printer Ports window is displayed. 10) Highlight LPR Port and click New Port. If LPR Port is not listed TCP\IP protocol and/or Microsoft TCP/IP Printing service is not installed on this computer. Install these items and return to step 9. 11) In the box labeled Name or address of server providing lpd enter the TCP/IP address of the printer. In the box labeled Name of printer or print queue on that server enter either xjdirect, xjprint or xjhold. The printer can have up to three queues available, depending on model and installed options. All models have the xjdirect queue available. Models with the hard drive option add the xjprint and xjhold queues. 3

4 MODEL DX DX w/opt HDD LX EX AVAILABLE QUEUES xjdirect xjdirect, xjprint, xjhold xjdirect, xjprint, xjhold xjdirect, xjprint, xjhold It is recommended to use the xjprint queue if available when the printer is installed in a network environment. 12) Click OK in the Add LPR compatible printer window after input of the LPR information. 13) Click Close on the Printer ports window and click OK on the Ports tab of the printer Properties. 17) Select the Device Settings tab. 18) Highlight the options that are installed in the printer and configure the driver accordingly. 19) Select the Sharing tab. 4

5 19) Select Shared and enter a Share Name for the printer. Click OK. 20) Print a test page from the General tab. Section 3) Installing and configuring the print driver at an NT client. NT Workstation 1) Click Start then Settings and left click the Printers folder. 2) Double click the Add Printer icon and the Add Printer Wizard starts. 3) Select Network printer server and click Next. 5

6 4) Browse the network and highlight the printer shared on the NT server. Click OK. 5) Click Finish. Print a test page from the General tab of the printer properties. Windows 95/98 Clients It is recommended that Windows 95/98 clients load the driver from the setup program located on the Printer Driver & Utility CD-ROM. The CD-ROM contains additional support files for Windows 95/98. For easy access the CD-ROM can be shared from or copied to an NT server. Pointing the driver to the printer on Windows 95/98 clients. 1) Click Start, and follow the pop-up menu to Settings and Printers. Left click the Printers folder. 2) Right click on the printer icon and select Properties from the pop-up menu. 3) Click on the Details tab. 6

7 4) Click Add Port.. then Browse.. 5) The computer will browse the network and display all resources on the network. Find the server sharing the printer. Click the plus sign and select the KX-P8420 or KX-PS8100. Click OK. 7

8 6) Click OK again, and Apply on the next screen. The driver will display a warning regarding Fonts. 15) Click OK. Select the Device Options tab. 8

9 16) Select the Options tab and select each option installed in the printer. Click Apply. Send a Test Print from the General tab. METHOD 2 Method 2 will spool all print jobs directly to the KX-P8420 or KX-PS8100, bypassing the NT server. Considerations 1) If this is the first Postscript printer being installed access to the Windows NT installation files are necessary. 2) All workstations that will be printing to the KX-P8420 or KX-PS8100 must be setup for TCP\IP printing. (NT Workstations must have Microsoft TCP\IP printing service installed. Windows 95 clients must have the File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks service installed). 3) All workstations must have valid TCP\IP addresses, Subnet masks, and Default gateways. 4) The printer must be assigned a valid, unique TCP\IP address. 5) WebTools are not required to setup and enable TCP\IP in the printer. WebTools are required to setup and enable peer to peer for Windows 95/98 in the printer. WebTools require TCP\IP protocol and a JAVA enabled web browser (Netscape 3.02 and Internet Explorer 4.0). To display WebTools properly the display resolution must be 800 X 600 or higher. 6) Refer to the Windows 95/98 peer to peer documentation for setting up Windows 95/98 clients, and enabling peer to peer protocol on the KX-P8420 or KX-PS

Start from the rightmost digit and work your way left. 5 will increase the digit over the cursor, 3will shift the cursor one digit to the left. 15) Press Enter and AppleTalk Setup is displayed. 16) Press Exit and the printer will reinitialize with the TCP\IP information entered. 17) Ensure that the network cable is inserted into the printer. Section 2 Installing and configuring the print driver. This section contains instructions for installing and configuring the print driver on NT Workstation. Please refer to the Windows 95/98 peer to peer documentation for peer to peer setup on Windows 95/98 clients. 10

11 1) Insert the CDROM into the CDROM drive. If auto-run is enabled for the CDROM drive, setup will automatically start. If not the setup.exe file is located in the \installr directory. 2) Click Next at the Welcome window. Click Yes to agree to the terms on the next window and the Setup Type window is displayed. 3) Select the installation type desired. Custom is recommended. The default installation of the printer is Compact. Click Next. Windows 95/98 Compact will only load the Postscript printer driver. Typical will install the Postscript driver, Adobe Type Manager and fonts. Custom will install the Postscript driver, Adobe Type Manager with fonts and color support files. Windows NT Compact will only load the Postscript driver. Typical will also only load the Postscript driver. Custom will install the Postscript driver and color support files. The color support files are Pantone and CMYK color reference files that can be printed on the KX-P8420 or KX-PS8100. The print outs of these files can be referred to for color matching within supported applications. 11

12 4) Select Next at the Choose Destination Location window and the Select Components window is displayed. 5) Select Next at the Select Components window. By default the Custom Setup Type selects all of the printer components available. 6) Select Lpt1 or another valid port and select Next. If the printer is on a network, it is simpler to select Lpt1 now during the driver setup. The network port can be added after setup in the Ports tab of the driver. 7) Select Next at the Start Copying Files window. 8) Select Finish at the Panasonic KX-P8420 or KX-PS8100 Setup window. Setup from the CD-ROM is complete. Pointing the driver to the printer. 9) Click Start, and follow the pop-up menu to Settings and Printers. Left click the Printers folder. 10) Right click on the printer icon and select Properties from the pop-up menu. 11) Click on the Ports tab. 12

13 12) Click on the Add Port... button and the Printer Ports window is displayed. 13) Highlight LPR Port and click New Port. If LPR Port is not listed TCP\IP protocol and/or Microsoft TCP/IP Printing service is not installed on this computer. Install these items and return to step 9. 14) In the box labeled Name or address of server providing lpd enter the TCP/IP address of the printer. In the box labeled Name of printer or print queue on that server enter either xjdirect, xjprint or xjhold. The printer can have up to three queues available, dependending on model and installed options. All models have the xjdirect queue available.
