STRATEGIC GOAL 1: PROMOTE ACCESS & EQUITY Diversity Recruiting Increase Use of Early Alert System (EAS) Early Alert Messages Expand Program Mix at Downtown Campus Increase Course Schedule Efficiency Facials Specialty Increase the Number of Baccalaureate Paid Internships In an effort to increase the diversity of its employee population, FSCJ s Human Resources is expanding its recruiting efforts. Increasing employee diversity will enhance the College s ability to attract students from underrepresented populations. For more information, contact Mark Lacey at (904) or at mark.lacey@fscj.edu. Student Services, using faculty input, will make changes to its Early Alert System, a key element of the College s Quality Enhancement Plan: MAP for Success. Student Services is developing a new process to track and follow up on Early Alert Messages. This initiative, combined with the initiative Increase Use of EAS (Early Alert System), will provide a means to directly affect student learning and the student learning support environment. Through this collaboration, more focused and effective interventions are being employed, resulting in greater student retention. Campus leadership is conducting a review of the programs offered at Downtown Campus to ensure that the campus meets the needs of the surrounding communities including downtown Jacksonville. The review focuses on both credit and non-credit workforce development programs, and will help determine which programs will attract the number of students needed to make the campus sustainable. Utilizing the Allocate, Build and Balance, and Coordinate and Calibrate model, the North Campus and Nassau Center deans and enrollment management teams are creating a more efficient, less restrictive, and more student-friendly schedule resulting in fewer empty seats, more student choice, and easier degree attainment through access for students. Career Education at North Campus, in collaboration with faculty and students, produced a mechanism to establish and analyze the baseline data for program completion. This analysis will be used to determine where rigor can be increased and to identify the necessary changes in curriculum, professional development and academic supports to significantly increase student success. Career Education at South Campus is collaborating with program managers, deans, faculty and advisory boards to identify business and industry partnerships and delineate prospective job opportunities in the five related curricular fields which produce additional paid internship opportunities for current and future Bachelor of Applied Science and Bachelor of Science students. 2 STRATEGIC GOAL 1: PROMOTE ACCESS & EQUITY South Campus Outreach and Recruitment TRIO grant personnel at South Campus are working to increase postsecondary and secondary placement at a minimum of 50 percent. By meeting all intended targets, the Fiscal Year 2016 TRIO application will receive additional points in the award process. Additionally, this initiative implementation endeavors to increase underrepresented student enrollment at FSCJ by more than 1 percent. STRATEGIC GOAL 2: ENHANCE RIGOROUS & RELEVANT LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES Increase Faculty Effectiveness and Student Success North Campus Boot Camp Collaboration Convert Postsecondary Adult Vocational (PSAV) Programs Expanded and Remodeled Faculty Resource Area Flipped Classroom Pilot Physics II at Open Campus/Deerwood Center To increase the effectiveness of general education and workforce faculty members, North Campus developed and will continue to deliver professional development courses related to classroom pedagogy. Faculty exposed to the training should be more well-versed in practices that positively impact student success. For more information, contact Dr. Dana White at (904) or at dana.white@fscj.edu. To positively impact student success, the science, English and nursing departments at North Campus have developed and are delivering Anatomy and Physiology and APA boot camps to assist new nursing students with concepts that have traditionally given them difficulty. North Campus workforce is reviewing current PSAV programs and determining the feasibility of converting some to credit programs, thus providing a career pathway to credit programs. At Open Campus/Deerwood Center, a new Faculty Resource Center has been developed to better meet the needs of faculty. Three distinct areas are available: individual work stations with earphones for quiet work, a collaboration area and a group training area. Faculty have access to self-paced technology tools and resources, as well as a centralized communications area so that they can come to one place to stay fully informed and engaged. Open Campus/Deerwood Center brought innovative teaching techniques to the classroom to encourage student-centered active learning. The benefits of active learning include the following: improved academic performance, increased student engagement, enhanced critical thinking, improved attitudes toward learning, reduced discipline problems, and the ability to meet the needs of diverse learner populations. One of the many ways Open Campus/Deerwood Center continues to support student retention and degree completion is by offering at least one Physics II class each term. As FSCJ is located in an area where approximately a quarter of a million students need to complete a degree, offering Physics II at least three times per year offers Open Campus/Deerwood Center degree-seeking students accessibility to high-quality, higher-level science courses. 3 STRATEGIC GOAL 2: ENHANCE RIGOROUS & RELEVANT LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES 50th Anniversary Campus Activities Public Safety Management Program Review South Campus General Education Review Open Campus/Deerwood Center has designed a series of activities that provide heightened exposure to and awareness of the arts. The activities promote student and faculty involvement in an enhanced learning/teaching relationship as art, social and civic issues, politics, history, math and sciences as various mediums were explored within curriculum developing artistic outcomes (presentations, visual arts, etc.). South Campus Career Education leadership participated in the Public Safety Management Bachelor of Applied Science (B.A.S.) program review in order to maintain content currency, occupational relevancy and program completability. The dean of career education and faculty for the B.A.S. in Public Safety Management, by ensuring students are receiving course content aligned with currently required job-related skills, anticipate increased enrollments and significant positive impact on graduation metrics. The South Campus faculty and respective councils are supporting the general education review by identifying missed targets, tracking trends, and reviewing course delivery methods and enhancements. STRATEGIC GOAL 3: INCREASE RETENTION & COMPLETION TIme to Degree (TTD) Making an Academic Degree Plan Sync Class Scheduling with Roadmaps Student Services implemented new advising processes to encourage students to maximize their course load to reduce Time to Degree (TTD). The initiative has students look beyond the 12 hours is enough model and consider the advantages of taking 15 hours per term, as well as having advisors look beyond 12 hours (as the minimum for federal financial aid) and explore 15 hour options with students. Student Services, through academic advising, is requiring all incoming associate degree students to complete an Academic Degree Plan by the time they enroll in their 15th credit hour or 25 percent of their program of study. Retention and graduation rates are increasing as a result of students Making a Plan. Students also report increased satisfaction and engagement with advisors (and engagement in academic planning activities) according to data collected from the Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE) in the spring. Student Services personnel, in collaboration with academic deans and program managers, are providing recommendations regarding which courses students should take in which sequence and during which terms in order to best complete their program of study. These recommended courses are being used to create Roadmaps which students use to create their personalized Academic Degree Plan. Using a Roadmap and an Academic Degree Plan will increase the rate of continuous enrollment which should increase the number of students completing their degrees. 4 STRATEGIC GOAL 3: INCREASE RETENTION & COMPLETION Student Success in Cosmetology Arts Supporting Students at North Campus 30 Credit Hour Completion Initiative Improve Student Retention in Limited Access Programs Hybrid Efficiency and Acceleration Strategic Enrollment Management at South Campus North Campus Career Education is implementing a strategy to improve retention and graduation rates in Cosmetology Arts. Faculty and staff are onterviewing students prior to the beginning of the course, measuring completion by maintaining progress reports, putting emphasis on missing hours of attendance, creating an exit strategy after a student misses 22 hours, providing opportunities to make-up hours, and providing a weekly written intervention. North Campus leadership, faculty and program managers encouraged tutors, career development staff and student success staff to enter classrooms and inform students about available academic support services. Leadership at North Campus has designed several events to recognize and encourage students who completed 30 hours of coursework toward an associate degree. The events encourage degree completion by determining the path to completion, clarifying career goals and identifying next steps beyond graduation with an associate degree. Evaluation of matriculation data for students in Limited Access Programs has allowed North Campus leadership to develop a plan for increasing the retention of these students. Open Campus/Deerwood Center faculty were trained in effective course delivery in a hybrid format at an accelerated pace. This strategy allows students to take a greater number of courses per term increasing efficiency of time spent earning a degree. South Campus is supporting Strategic Enrollment Management (SEM) by offering additional sections of art, music and theater appreciation. The additional classes allow students to easily fulfill that general education requirement. Monitoring baseline assignments for efficiency, delivery modality and work load units of faculty support SEM at the campus level. STRATEGIC GOAL 4: CONTRIBUTE TO WORKFORCE & ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT Reactivation of Early Childhood Education Courses at Downtown Campus Nassau Center Hospitality Management Institute The Florida Department of Education required that in-service teachers take a class in special education as well as an upperlevel education course to renew their teacher certification. To meet these needs and attract new students, four to five upperlevel courses have been reactivated, allowing more options for in-service teachers. This initiative is designed to attract Nassau County students interested in or employed by the Nassau County tourism industry through the Associate in Science in Hospitality and Tourism Management and the Associate in Science in Culinary Management. 5 STRATEGIC GOAL 4: CONTRIBUTE TO WORKFORCE & ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT Health Care Advisory Committee North Campus leadership established a Health Care Advisory Committee (HCAC) made up of health care leaders in the Duval and Nassau County communities. STRATEGIC GOAL 5: CULTIVATE INSTITUTIONAL EFFICIENCY & EFFECTIVENESS Compliance Training Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) Fifth-Year Interim Report The Human Resources department developed this initiative and is providing training to raise awareness of Equal Employment Opportunity laws, sexual harassment, Title IX and the Violence Against Women Act. FSCJ, through the Office of Institutional Advancement, is scheduled to submit a Fifth-Year Interim Report to SACSCOC in Institutional Advancement will ensure that the data for that report remains accurate and current by developing and implementing training for appropriate participants regarding artifact gathering, analysis and reporting as it relates to and supports the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) Standards required for inclusion in the Fifth-Year Interim Report.
